Since this tank comes as a kit, I will rate each component individually. Tank: 5/5 Glass is good quality and thicker than I thought it would be, clarity is good, seams are nice, top edges are smoothed over and clean. It also comes with a closed cell foam mat to place the tank on which is a nice addition. (Be sure not to throw this out with the packaging!)I wouldn’t change anything about it. This tank alone is worth the price. Top: 3/5 Flimsy plastic, but it serves its intended purpose. The hinges are nice and mount securely. It may not do much to help evaporation, but it will keep your fish in the tank. I didn’t use it for my application, but it’s a nice addition to a rimless tank. I’d like to see it made out of glass. Filter: 4/5 The filter is cheaply made, but it works. It’s basically just a tiny pump with a sponge attached over the intake, which is perfectly adequate for this size tank. It provides good mechanical and biological filtration. The noise that other reviewers are complaining about comes from the air intake on the return which is not really necessary. Simply plug the nipple where the tube attaches and it’ll run near silent. It would be nice if they included a second return without the air intake, but the one it comes with is easily modified. Light: 2/5 It works, but the armature is flimsy and it is not very bright. It could be okay for a betta or something, but it is still not really bright enough to show off the tank as well as I would like. It definitely would not support even the lowest light plants. If you plan on keeping live plants in this tank, you will absolutely need to purchase a different light fixture. I did not use the included light after the initial setup of the tank, but it was helpful while aquascaping since it’s so small and stayed out of my way. Overall: 5/5 I really only purchased this kit for the tank alone, and I am very pleased. The tank alone is more than worth the price of the kit, so everything else included is kind of a bonus. The attached picture is my tank 2 months after initial setup. The plants are Staurogyne repens, and the livestock are Neocaridina davidii (freshwater dwarf shrimp). The light pictured is not included with the kit. Disclaimer: I am a professional in the aquarium industry. My experience with the product may differ from that of a beginner aquarist. Size: 5 Gallon
Beautiful glass aquarium with a really simple design. The front has rounded corners and the lid consists of a simple, flat sheet of acrylic that you affix to the tank with hinges. This does leave a small gap near the back of the tank (maybe an inch wide), but that's convenient for both the internal filter and any heaters you may want to add. It may be prudent to leave an inch less of water in the tank or so in case there are any jumpers to be safe. The light it came with is pretty weak, and as noted by another reviewer there is no switch or button to press to turn it off - it has to be perpetually on or you have to unplug it. I have a single male betta strutting around this tank and he seems to like shade, so I don't use it at all. The filter is surprisingly quiet and effective - it makes a low, humming noise that I tuned out after about a day. As an internal filter, the entire thing is submerged and the water is sucked in from the bottom where it goes through a sponge, some sort of media that comes in a cartridge, and is directed out of a spout that's also under the surface of the water. The spout can be swiveled around 180 degrees so you can direct the flow wherever you want - I chose to squash the heater into the corner, then direct the filter flow into the heater/corner to both diminish the flow and spread the heat around. There are three levels of flow you can pick, but I found that even at the lowest level, it was too powerful for my betta. This was easily fixed by attaching a little piece of aquarium sponge about a centimeter in front of the spout to dissipate the flow a bit. It works really well! Now the flow is so gentle that Bruce (of Batman fame) regularly perches and sleeps on top of the sponge. I assume he's brooding over his little hut and plants. 5 pounds of gravel was perfect for this size. It's also worth noting that when I ordered this tank from amazon, it was truly pitifully packaged and arrived basically as a box full of broken glass. Just something to keep in mind. ... show more
