Description

Penguin Pottery’s glazes offer a huge range of effects to choose from: vivid, bright, smooth, glossy, textured, satin, matte; opaque, semi-opaque, semi-translucent, translucent, flowing, non-flowing. Our low fire glazes are perfect for school projects, classrooms, studios, and potters who do not fire at high temperature. These low fire glazes are the potter’s choice when looking for a wide palette of colors, like celadon, lively reds, deep greens, bright blues. Our mid fire glazes offer similar ranges but also introduce interesting effects and tonality not available in low fire glazes. Sometimes glaze contents will settle. That's normal! Just like house paints, ceramic glazes need to be fully mixed to ensure smooth consistency. We recommend mixing well for at least 1-2 minutes. You can apply glazes either by (a) dipping your bisqued piece into the glaze or (b) brushing it on. Our glazes are ready to apply with a brush. If you're looking to dip, we recommend applying a dispersing agent like Darvan. Removing all dust from your bisque-fired piece is critical to ensure a good outcome. Clean moist sponges are best. Make sure your piece is completely dry before glazing! Ceramic glazes are classified according to a temperature range ("cone") in three general groups: "low-fire," "mid-fire," and "high-fire." Over-firing will damage the piece/possibly the kiln, and under-firing will just give you ugly results. One of the fascinating aspects of ceramics is the slight variations we can achieve by using different clay bodies, glaze types and firing methods. It's like vintage film photography - you don't know what it'll look like until you get it out of the kiln! Glazes will react differently (and look different) depending on several factors, including: That is why ceramics is an art! We recommend you experiment with different approaches and, most importantly, embrace the uncertainty. You will have a lot of fun seeing different results! • Beautiful and unique chalky glaze for smooth surfaces
Color: Specialty Series Set #2 (Mid Fire)
These glazes are great, and really create their own beautiful and unique coloring when fired. I also love the clear as it does an interesting cracked effect without being actually cracked. These are, as advertised, very chalky and a bit thick so they look amazing on a smooth surface. Potentially try some thinner (which they sell) or a tiny bit of water if you’re doing stamps or etching on your clay, as my experience is the glaze will cover up small etching or stamp work and fill in the indentations so it’s not visible. I still LOVE these, just use them in certain ways and plan to get their thinner to try. ... show more

  • Great customer support, glazes didn’t turn out
Color: Specialty Series Set #2 (Mid Fire)
Unfortunately these glazes were very disappointing, some of the glazes were extremely watery and hard to paint on. Even so I still did 3 coats and after firing none of the colors turned out as they should. The other glazes were rock hard and even after adding the mixmaster glaze liquid they just never turned out how they were supposed to. We have several other brands of glazes at my studio and have never had this problem before. I do have to say penguin pottery is great though and stand behind their products. They believe the glazes frozen and thawed during shipment (order during winter) which caused the error and refunded the purchase. ... show more

  • Disappointed
Color: Specialty Series Set #3 (Mid Fire)
Arrived with seals missing & open with bottles half filled. After mixing thoroughly with a paint mixer some product was thick & muddy & some water thin with a hard block in it that would not reconstitute. Replacement arrived. Bottles were sealed but same consistency issues. Fired on product as directed. Results are a flat matte dull color with inconsistent coverage. I have wasted clay, and most importantly my time, for an ugly outcome. I feel the product was temperature abused. I would like a full refund for both batches and a replacement. I do not feel I should have to waste any more of my time on a return. ... show more

  • The jars don't seal
Color: Celadon Series (Mid Fire)
Got these in March, it's July now and all the jars I opened are dried out now. Feels like a waste of money. The colors were just ok.

  • I’d buy more
Color: Specialty Series Set #1 (Mid Fire)
Really nice glazes. The green is a bit basic so def will want to multi layer with other colors. The rusty red is beautiful with significant amount of black coming through. I had to think the really thick ones with a bit of water. The blue is beautiful. I will def get more colors. some seem to drip more than others so def test and use cookies until you know how they react in kiln. ... show more
