It shipped and delivered quickly. The yak is great and exactly what I wanted in every way like the size, weight and features. I’m new to kayaking and it’s very stable, comfortable and very easy to paddle around the lake. No fear!

  • Comfortable & Well Designed Amenities for Beginner - SAFETY WARNING
I am a beginner Kayaker and I chose this model because of the comfortable 'fishing seat' and the amenities like adjustable foot pedals, water resistant rear hatch, paddle holder, water holder, phone holder and front bungees. For recreational kayaking these make for a really comfortable and relaxing experience. I've been out for 3 hours so far and no back pain. When the seat is removed, the kayak is even lighter and as a 5'4" 160 pound woman who works out I'm able to carry it and get it on the roof of my sedan fairly easily. Now for the safety warning - this kayak has a large and roomy cockpit but be aware that these types of recreational kayaks are very difficult to get back into if you capsize and fill with water quickly. I just did a rescue class with some instructors. With more expensive touring and whitewater kayaks that have a 'skirt' you can learn to 'flip' the kayak. Another technique is to purchase an inflatable or foam 'Paddle Float' (NRS and Harmony are good brands). You have to inflate the paddle float and put it on one end of the paddle and use it as an 'outrigger' to hoist yourself back onto the Kayak. The instructors were doubtful that the Paddle Float technique would even work given the amount of water my Argo took on. Leaving the alternative: grab the end of the kayak and swim to shore. Oh, you also have to purchase a 'bilge pump' if you take on smaller amounts of water and need to get rid of it. I recently read that 75% if kayaking fatalities are brand new recreational kayakers with less than 10 hours in the water. This can be a dangerous hobby if the following are not taken into consideration: 1 - always wear a PFD (Lifejacket). Even if you can swim, if you are stuck in a large body of water that is higher than neck deep, your energy will give out. Most kayaking fatalities involve people who didn't wear one. 2 - buy a kayak safety kit (Bilge Pump, Paddle Float, Whistle) and take a safety class. When you fall out of a kayak it can be really disorienting and scary and the more practice you have, the better 3 - find a kayak group on Meetup or Facebook to go on trips with - you will get a lot of good tips and members of the group will be able to help you if you have an emergency. 4 - cold water can kill you quickly. Study what water temperatures are unsafe (60 degrees and below). Stay close to shore when you kayak so that if you capsize you have a greater chance of being able to reach shore. Do not kayak in cold water unless you have proper gear (wetsuit/drysuit) and a trained buddy. 5 - get in shape and learn to swim. If you capsize you need to be strong and agile in order to get back in and if you can't you will need to swim to shore with your boat in tow (or leave it behind). ... show more

  • My Beautiful New Argo 100XR... arrived damaged...
I just took delivery, via Amazon and NSD Shipping, of a wonderful new Argo 100XR kayak! Thanks for a great product! This one will be my FOURTH Pelican kayak. Unfortunately it will also be my first Pelican kayak to arrive with any damage inflicted during transport. Therefore the following is my Pelican requested damage report and my Amazon requested review: Shipping Damage Problem #1) - A polyethylene product like a Pelican kayak should never be shipped standing up on it's bow or stern during the hot summer months... like mine was. The temperature in a closed truck can easily go over 100 degrees F causing the polyethylene hull to soften. When that happens gravity takes over and the bow or stern will begin to cave in/collapse (see very sad photo #1). That's not something one of your customers should ever have to see when viewing their beautiful, and expensive, newly arrived kayak! Fortunately there are dozens of good Youtube videos that show how to resoften and reshape a kayak hull… which I did (see happier photo #2) quite successfully, using a rounded broom handle and a hair dryer (on low)… after gaining inside access by removing the stern hatch cover and inside storage bag. Result: - scary shipping damage problem #1 solved. I do recommend, however, that you contact Amazon and your shipping company, NSD in this case, and warn them never to ship kayaks vertically or stack heavy items on them during hot weather. Shipping Damage Problem #2) - The thin layers of bubble wrap and plastic that my kayak came wrapped in are definitely NOT sufficient protection against an indifferent shipping employee. Since my kayak had been unwisely shipped vertically and, apparently, tossed around a bit between at least two different vehicles the wrap at the ends did not survive well enough to actually provide much protection. Result: - my kayak ended up with several fairly deep surface gouges and scuffs. I can live with them but I recommend that the PELICAN shipping department add at least one more bubble wrap layer and more protection at the two ends. Oddly, Pelican kayaks that are shipped to Costco arrive in a nice, long, protective, box. Why not Amazon too? Shipping damage problem #2 is… acceptable… sadly. Shipping Damage Problem #3) - Since my kayak was leaning, rolling (?) and rubbing against other items in the trucks during transport the large "Argo 100XR" label (on the right side bow deck) got partly torn off (think… "perhaps add more bubble wrap next time?"). "Minor cosmetic damage" you might say, however when you take delivery of a $500 plus kayak as beautiful as this one is you should, fairly, expect that this equally beautiful ID label will also arrive undamaged. * * * Therefore, - since I have managed to solve shipping damage problems #1 and #2 myself, at no cost to Pelican or Amazon, may I please request that I be shipped a new "Argo 100XR" hull deck label? Which I will generously (and happily) apply myself... as I ponder which model will be my FIFTH Pelican kayak someday! In all ways, other than delivery care, this product deserves 5 Stars... hence my 4 star review. Update: Pelican did respond and I have now been shipped a brand new "Argo 100XR" hull deck label. All is right again in the world of Pelican! Great product. Great company. Not so good shipper. ... show more
