As others have said, there's a plastic film you have to remove on both sides of the plastic shield. I don't think it's plexiglass, it's just a plastic square. This is fine! It doesn't produce the glare like glass does and even if I kept the film on it seemed clear enough. The frame is thick and stiff, and there's quality hardware installed. These were perfect. I needed them to display the grandkids pictures from different ages. They are nice looking and light weight. Each one has a pull off protection film on front AND back of clear plastic frame. It is not glass which was just fine with me. After putting all 6 frames up in a row on the wall they look amazing and honestly you can't tell that they don't have glass in the front. The picture hanger on the back is real nice. These frames get the job done. I love the simplicity of the frames. I always end up taking out the inner frame. So that I am able to place a full 11x14 picture inside. These are very sleek and lightweight picture frames. I like that there is not glass in them, so when my toddler plays with a picture there is no risk of it breaking. They look very good in my house, and look more expensive than they actually were.

These were very nice wood frames/all arrived in perfect shape. I would advise that the opening is a little smaller than 5"x7", cutting off a little of the picture.
