Description

"Overachiever was hands down one of the best rom coms I have ever read. One word. Banter. It has that in spades and gets better as you read as if that's even possible!" -- 1 New York Times Bestselling Author Rachel Van Dyken It started with a summer job and a ridiculous sex dream. If you were to ask my friends to describe me, they’d tell you I’m an ambitious person. Responsible, driven, and focused on my goals. Words like stubborn and uptight would probably get thrown in there too. I’m not sure about that, but I know who I’m not. I’m not the woman who lets a guy derail me from my plans. Watching others make that mistake has taught me well. No serious dating. No relationship until I’m successfully settled into my career. That’s the promise I made to myself and I’m determined to keep it. Despite being an excellent student, there’s one lesson I fear I’ve learned too late. Funny men aren’t as harmless as they seem and should be avoided at all times. They sneak in under your radar and end up under your skirt. One second you’re laughing. The next you’re hunting for your underwear on a hotel room floor. Believe me, it’s not worth it. If only my heart would stop screaming louder than my brain, I might be able to believe that Owen falls into that category. He’s my friend, but every day we spend together in this hotel, or working on our summer job building houses for charity, the harder it gets to convince myself we shouldn’t be more. Years of diligence, and I’m being destroyed by a goofy smile. Read more

  • Shade does it again - Wonderful book
SM Shade simply excels in romantic comedy. Another book set on Violent Circle, this one follows the serious and driven Remee. Forced to take a break from her studies, Remee participates in a project building houses to help earn a grant to cover her tuition. I adored Remee in the previous book as she is so serious compared to her roommates and their friends. Finding herself in over her head and overwhelmed beyond belief, she leans on Owen one of her goofy friends. I loved the fact that despite the fact both characters have walls, they were able to be open and vulnerable. S.M. Shade is an amazing writer and brings all of the emotions in this book. I laughed so much my husband thought I was choking. I yelled, cheered, groaned and giggled my way through this book. S.M. Shade writes wonderful stories that take you out of reality, if only for a little while. She is one of my go-to authors for romcoms. Great book. Fun Series. ... show more

  • Adorable
This second book is just as entertaining as the first. I enjoyed Owen's attitude and what he gives to Remee. They are great characters with steamy chemistry and I appreciated their connection. This author consistently writes entertaining and engaging stories full of laughs and creative story lines, and this is another good example of her skills. As with all of the books I have read of hers, I strongly caution a reader to be aware that bursts of laughter can and will occur. As well as frustration with whomever interrupts your reading. Hahaha...😉 I recommend reading this one in the correct reading order to get the most from the story and series. ... show more

  • the best banter
Owen is my new favorite book boyfriend. He is so charming, smart, and swoon level romantic. Remee is adorable as she busts through life with her perfectionist blinders on, only to have Owen patiently dismantle them. The dialog is laugh out loud one minute then sweet the next. A very fun ride!

  • A fun read
Overachiever is the second (standalone) book in the Slumming It series by S.M. Shade. When Overachiever was first released I had it ready to download but decided to save it (well more like savor it for when the time was right) for a quiet time. Big mistake. THIS was the book I needed to give a little levity to my life! Once again S.M. Shade has managed to find the perfect balance in a rom com. The chemistry between Remee and Owen is perfect as they blossom from friends to lovers and navigate the challenges of figuring out their life’s plans. The laugh out loud moments just kept coming and I have to say that hearing some of the internal dialog from a male perspective kept me giggling at the most unexpected moments. The atmosphere of the Violent Circle world makes a few appearances and as usual never disappoints! If you are in search of or in need of a funny book Overachiever should be on your list for an escape. ... show more

  • If you like juvenile humor
I finished the book but I won’t be reading more by this author. If you liked The Hangover movies than maybe this author is for you. Things I liked: the characters were mostly likable. It was well-written with no grammatical issues that took me out of the story. Things I didn’t like: They live on Violet Circle but they keep changing the sign to Violent. “It’s not a violent neighborhood. Eccentric, I suppose though I’ve never lived in low income housing before so I can’t say for sure it’s all that different from others.” There was not a lot of character development. Things I know about the male lead - he’s funny and studies “psychics and space sciences“ and near the end of the story that he’s from a large funny loving family. In the first chapter, it was obvious how the story was going to unfold. The female leads lifelong issues was resolved magically overnight. The premise of getting the two characters in a situation to fall in love was a habitat for humanity type organization pays college kids to live out of state for the summer paying for them to stay in a hotel and give them per diem and then gives them a years worth of tuition. Really? ... show more

  • Everyone needs an Owen
This fun little read is filled with life lessons, including how to be a good parent, like Owen's Mum, Rose, and how not to, like Remee's mother and father. It also showcases the importance of balance, forgiveness, love and learning from your mistakes. I thought this series would flow on from the original Violent Circle one, but there is only the tiniest of crossover, so it truly is like a new series. ... show more

  • Cute, fun and simple.
A delightful romp with most parts predictable and no unpleasant pieces. Pretty characters who are fun and young and silly. It's a nice and happy and easy trip through a part of a college experience.

  • Laughing out loud!
This book was awesome, down to earth and hilarious. I'm laughing so hard at the adult comedy and can't explain it to my little. Shared some of the stories with the hubby and he enjoyed it too. Read it, you'll love it too!
