I purchased this vest after having my dog's long hair enmeshed in the velcro of her puppy vest one time too many. Most of the vests I have looked at seem to have velcro bands at the tummy panel. After vigorously swimming, if your dog has long hair it is almost impossible to get free of the velcro without hurting the dog and/or damaging her fur. I finally found this one - and it is this specific model, not all Outward Hound models - that doesn't have velcro that will come in contact with the dog. My dog is a small labradoodle, now about 25 lbs. She was 22 lbs when I bought this, and at that point I had every strap adjusted as tightly as it would go in order to fit her well. Now I have let them each out a little, but there is no doubt that this vest will take her through the end of her growth. She is a demon in the water and has been using this for a couple of months now, so I know it's durable. She loves swimming and jumping in from the side of the pool. This vest gives her full range of motion. The handle on the back is a great safety feature if you ever have to fish your dog out of the water, and all of the plastic closures seem sturdy and secure. It is a bit of a challenge to adjust the first time, but if you take the time to do that correctly I think you will find that it's a great little vest that will work well for your dog. ... show more

I bought these for my two large breed dogs. They are wonderful swimmers and I know that they can swim on their own without any help. We bought a boat this past summer so we could take our girls out swimming to get in their exercise; they're spoiled cold weather dogs, so as soon as the weather hits 50 degrees and above, they're done with playing outside. I wanted to have the extra security of a floatation device for them just in case. You don't plan to have a boating accident or injury. I love these because the colors are super cute but still helps make them visible in case of an emergency. They don't hold a bunch of water thanks to the mesh and dry easily. We hang ours up in the garage to dry, and they're always dry with in 24 hours. The dual handles are great to help lift your dog or hang on to them if necessary. These handles were necessary for us while we trained our girls how to use their steps to get back onto the boat. While we were shopping for dog life jackets, we noticed that a lot of them didn't have a D-ring to clip a leash too. We absolutely needed that for our dogs because our independent German Shepherd will run any chance she gets, so other than being in the middle of open water, she can never be off leash. These life jackets are durable enough to be used to walk our dogs from the pickup down to the boat, near shores, and once we're back on land. I do not have to worry about the buckles breaking because it seems well built. Lastly, I love that the life jackets have multiple straps for adjustment. Both my girls wear larges, but they are very differently shaped larges, one being long and lean and the other dog being shaped like a barrel. I can get a wonderfully snug fit on the life jackets but being that these jackets are "sport jackets" they're thinner in the padding so that it doesn't impede their ability to swim. I would not advise this jacket for a dog that cannot swim at all, just for experienced swimmers. As always, I love the high quality of Kyjen Outward Hound products. Bought this for my 65 lb German shepherd who is a good swimmer but getting old and doesn’t know when to stop. It fit her perfectly. It is very easy to put on and tighten the straps. There is Velcro to secure the straps in place if you end up needing to tighten them more and have some loose straps. It has a handle on the back and a sturdy metal leash clip thingy, although I wouldn’t attach a leash to this just for safety reasons as it does not apply pressure in the same spots as a walking harness does. The color was true to the picture (we got the green and blue), and it was super cute. It worked great, too. You could tell that she was more buoyant because all of her upper back was out of the water and parallel to it so she wasn’t dragging her behind in the water. The only reason I rated a 4 is because the Velcro on the straps is hard to attach, but you can easily use something else to keep the loose straps in place after you adjust them. ... show more

Let me start by saying, if your dog loves the water like our two do - they NEED these and you need these. For their safety/comfort and your peace of mind. Easy to put on and secures well with the strong Velcro. Highly visible lime green makes it easier to see your pooch if they like to wonder off or swim out farm. Our babies weigh about 60lbs each and we are able to life them out of the water with the handle, without and issue. EXTREMELY DURABLE! Waterproof material helps our babies float. They don’t even have to paddle. They cab literally, just float with these lol! However, they’re usually too busy dashing thru the water to worry about ‘floating’. I assume the fact our dogs can’t stay still with these things on, they’re quite comfortable. On top of everything, they look super cute and we get compliments every where we go! ... show more

I bought this float coat to support my 11-year-old Golden Retriever. She's 58 lbs and the large was perfect. She is a strong smooth swimmer and had no problem jumping off the boat and maneuvering in the water. We could easily pull her back onto the boat with the top handle. She even dragged us around with the rear handle. The leash attachment does not appear to be reinforced, but it worked fine for getting her to and from the car to the boat. You can see in the photos that the belly support helps keep her high in the water, most of the time her tail was visible. Ruby swam for several hours and didn't mind the coat at all. Be sure to check the straps from time to time to be sure it's neither too loose or too tight. If your dog is not a strong swimmer, I would recommend one of the other Outward Hound versions that provide a bit more chin support. My only "con" is the lack of color choices. Other than that, I highly recommend having a float coat for all dogs near water. If they fall out and you need to circle back the extra bit of flotation and color could save thier lives. ... show more

I have used this on my 65 lb GSD multiple times trying to teach her to kayak and paddleboard. Each time she jumps in and heads for shore (I finally gave up). Once she had a fairly long swim and then panicked as she wasn't able to get out of the water where she went to shore due to a steep drop. I was able to paddle to her and get her back on the kayak. Without this, she would have definitely drowned. Once you get the intial fit done, it is easy to put on. It doesn't stain and dries quickly. She seems comfy in it. It definitely works! ... show more

Not a fan. Too bulky for a little dog. Doesn’t fit well no matter what I did. My little dog gets his front legs through the neck hole and it rolls him over. Potential drowning hazard. Not safe for dachshunds in my opinion

Fit my very active Vizsla 45 lbs. She slipped getting out onto a wet dock, and completely flipped upside down with her head in the water, it flipped her over right side up immediately. I need to keep her on a long lead attached to this because she goes after shore birds and gets into swigt currents. Keeps her safe. ... show more
