The Outward Hound Dawson Dog Life Jacket is a high-performance dog life jacket flotation for boating, the beach, the pool, and any other water adventures you might get up to. The Dawson is designed for novice to intermediate swimmers. This dog life vest features high quality neoprene side panels for strong buoyancy and thermal insulation to keep your dog comfortable. A front neck float adds extra support to help your pup keep their head above water. Top grab handles make it easy to grab and support your dog as needed. Adjustable straps keep dogs secure in and out of water. For small dogs, sizes XS and S come with one top handle, and for larger dogs, sizes M, L, and XL come with dual handles. I have an Olde English Bulldogge who sinks like a rock. She does good to tread water at all. Because of this the water is not her friend which is a problem since she goes fishing with me on the boat and I take her to the beach. She has a deep chest and a narrow waist and I stuck to the size chart which said the size she needed could support up to a 70lb dog. That made me nervous because she is around 65-70 lbs. I took the chance and we hit the lake today. Like others said the straps have plenty of room to adjust and I was able to get a good snug fit without a problem. Then before getting in the water I used the lift straps to make sure all would hold. The jacket did great and feels very sturdy and well made letting me lift her with ease. Next we got in the water and to my amazement she started swimming all around the boat. It completely supports her and allows her to float with no effort on hr part. For the price this is an outstanding product that gives me piece of mind that she is safe on the water plus I can now let her cool off in deeper water and lift her back into the boat without hurting her or me. As for her wearing it. She doesnt seem to mind at all and almost seemed to enjoy it. She didnt chew or bite at any part of it and it did not rub or irritate her in any area. She had it on today from 6am to 330pm and showed no signs of being bothered by it. She also did not get hot in it and it actually keep her cool since it stayed nice and damp from being in the water. She has full movement and seemed nice and comfy laying around as I was fishing. Also it is a good color and if she was to fall in it is very high visibility to make a rescue easy. Dont hesitate. This product is well worth the money and more. Update(10-17-14)- Today I went fishing and while on my bass boat my trolling motor took a break. While working on getting it fixed my bulldog went to the back of the boat and got a drink from the lake. While Im sitting with bits and pieces of trolling motor on the front deck I heard a big splash. I look up to see my dog was gone. She is not a ballerina and slipped in to the lake with her clumsy self. Luckily she had on her vest and very calmly bobbed in the water for a second and then began to swim around. I let her take a couple laps around the boat while I got the trolling motor bits safe and then lifted her back on board by the vest straps. If I did not have this vest today I bet I would have had a big mess by needing to move quickly to save my rock of a dog. Also I thought that if she was to get to far from the boat and the fact my trolling motor was down I would have had to either use the main motor to snag her, which would not be very safe, or get wet myself to get her. I am very glad I bought this vest and today it certainly paid for itself. She has used it many times now on the lake and pool. It still looks new and is holding up extremely well. She has yet to protest wearing it and really seems to be confident around the water now.

This is a great lifejacket and the price is ridiculously low, I thought it was a hoax. I have a 50 pound Australian Shepherd and a 90 pound Rottweiler and the large actually fits both of them! It was meant for my aussie so the large fits her perfectly and is pretty snug on my Rottie but it does still fit him. The jacket is very sturdy, it floats great (my aussie can stop swimming and it completely holds her up wonderfully), the handles on the top are great for adding extra support or directing a swimming dog in the direction you want them to go. My aussie is terrified of water that she can't stand in (she loves water as long as she can still stand up) and this has definitely helped her be much more comfortable in the water once she finally realizes it will hold her up. I unfortunately didn't get any pictures or videos when she was using it in deep water, but the pictures at least show you what it looks like on and how she doesn't care about it being on at all. Anyway, the stretchy material under the chest is just like wetsuit material, I was amazed at the quality of this whole jacket, especially for the amazing price it is listed at. Other jackets I was looking at didn't have near as many cool features and were all four to six times the cost of this one. The wetsuit material seems very comfortable and allows you to velcro the jacket pretty snug before clipping the straps. This also means that the whole weight of the dog is distributed evenly across a larger surface area rather than just two small, painful straps. The neck piece also holds up my aussies head great so she can be completely still with her head supported and the jacket will hold her up. She isn't thrilled about it being on for the first ten minutes but its relatively low profile and not bulky so after she starts playing, she completely forgets about it. Overall, it is an amazingly effective jacket, the quality is beyond expectations, and the price is absolutely unbeatable. I would still have bought this jacket for double the price if I would have known the quality.

Jensen is 85lbs, and the size large fit fine. It was a bit tight around his neck, but it served its purpose. We did have to leave his harness on under the life vest due to there not really being a spot to connect a leash. This is a good vest for the value. It dried quickly afterwords as well.

Bought this for my 65 lb German shepherd who is a good swimmer but getting old and doesn’t know when to stop. It fit her perfectly. It is very easy to put on and tighten the straps. There is Velcro to secure the straps in place if you end up needing to tighten them more and have some loose straps. It has a handle on the back and a sturdy metal leash clip thingy, although I wouldn’t attach a leash to this just for safety reasons as it does not apply pressure in the same spots as a walking harness does. The color was true to the picture (we got the green and blue), and it was super cute. It worked great, too. You could tell that she was more buoyant because all of her upper back was out of the water and parallel to it so she wasn’t dragging her behind in the water. The only reason I rated a 4 is because the Velcro on the straps is hard to attach, but you can easily use something else to keep the loose straps in place after you adjust them.

I have a miniature dachshund who is not very fond of water. I bought him this vest to desensitize him to water and to have peace of mind in case he fell in the pool or the lake where we visit family (I figured even if he panicked at least he would float and not drown). 1. Straps/size - I like the adjustability of the straps. He was quite small when I first got this and I was able to adjust it so he fit snuggly. I was also able to ensure I expanded it as he got slightly bigger. 2. Color - I love the color I chose, very cute! The color slightly diminished and faded over time, but I left it outside multiple times drying off or just because I forgot. 3. Durability - this was pretty durable considering my puppy is still in the teething phase! he chewed on the straps quite a few times before I caught him but honestly they look pretty good still. 4. Performance - this performed pretty well (9.5/10). My only complaint is that sometimes if he was a little heavier that day (too many treats) I did notice he wasn’t staying as above the water as other times. However, I wouldn’t have gone a size up, due to his actual dimensions. If you have a particularly fat pupper who’s pretty small, this may not work for you for that reason. Overall I would definitely recommend! Very cute and helped him get used to the water. He still isn’t a water doxie but one step at a time! "Dawson" model swim jacket is my fav and my 2 dogs. My small dogs hates wearing anything and she always happily puts this on, and she's not even much of water lover but this is comfortable based on my observation of it's construction and my little ones behavior. I think this is a good vest for beginners or not strong swimmers, and also active swimmers since the style has no material around front legs so it allows for more comfortable range of motion as well. CON = getting the right fit. I had to size down for both my dog's measurements vs the size chart so maybe others need to also. My smaller dog is a solid 17" rib cage girth (all her clothes and harnesses are for 17") and I re-measured her when I ordered this but she fits in XS for this product with the straps almost as short as they go. Odd as XS says the biggest girth is 15" yet the S was still too loose by a couple inches with all straps as short as possible. Likewise my other dog actually fits a M, yet size chart indicated she'd be a L but it was far too big. PROS = *This life vest has excellent boyancy but is not bulky. *It is easy to adjust the straps and then just take off and on by the 3 clips. *It is very secure under the belly and for the chin/chest when it is the right fit for your dogs body type. And the front under chin material is not obnoxiously bulky like other models. *No Velcro! which my dogs hate the sound of and velcro sucks with sand and hair obviously. *The quick grab handle runs vertical with the spine which doesn't create much water resistance as others that have a strap across body left to right. *No chaffing around front legs because there is no material or extra sand to rub near the armpits because of the open front style that doesn't go down & under the center chest and between the front legs. Perfect! It fits great. At first my dog was a little unsure about the water but by the end of the day she was swimming and kayaking like a pro. The fitting video was very helpful in getting everything adjusted correctly. The handles were very helpful when she fell out of the kayak, I was able to easily lift her back in even though we were in deep water.

I have a cat who enjoys adventuring outdoors and nearly every life jacket is made for dogs so she had a really hard time with the other brands which were so heavy and uncomfortable around her neck. This one was much more comfortable for her and she was able to walk without the weight of it causing her to fall over. The only problem I have with it is that it arrived today very obviously used. There was fur all over the inside but I chalked it up to someone else tried it on and it maybe didn’t fit them. No problem as I’m not a stranger to fur all over the place, so I used a lint roller and all clean. So I thought. As you can see in the photos, this was very obviously used with stains on the outer parts. I’m surprised the seller did not check this before sending it back out. I would return but I need it for this week and we leave for our vacation tomorrow. And seeing as how this is the only one I’ve found that properly fits her, I’m stuck with a used product I paid full price for. So not too happy about that. I will say though she looks super cute in it. I’m not too sure about durability because it has some threads that already seem to be coming out and the stitching does not look very sturdy.
