Description

The Outward Hound Dawson Dog Life Jacket is a high-performance dog life jacket flotation for boating, the beach, the pool, and any other water adventures you might get up to. The Dawson is designed for novice to intermediate swimmers. This dog life vest features high quality neoprene side panels for strong buoyancy and thermal insulation to keep your dog comfortable. A front neck float adds extra support to help your pup keep their head above water. Top grab handles make it easy to grab and support your dog as needed. Adjustable straps keep dogs secure in and out of water. For small dogs, sizes XS and S come with one top handle, and for larger dogs, sizes M, L, and XL come with dual handles. Please select the appropriate dog life jacket size after taking your dog's girth measurement along the widest part of their rib cage. Make sure to take any other unique traits (i.e., large shoulders, long torso) into consideration. The Dawson dog life vest is available in multiple colors to keep your pooch looking good when it’s time to swim.

I have a miniature dachshund who is not very fond of water. I bought him this vest to desensitize him to water and to have peace of mind in case he fell in the pool or the lake where we visit family (I figured even if he panicked at least he would float and not drown). 1. Straps/size - I like the adjustability of the straps. He was quite small when I first got this and I was able to adjust it so he fit snuggly. I was also able to ensure I expanded it as he got slightly bigger. 2. Color - I love the color I chose, very cute! The color slightly diminished and faded over time, but I left it outside multiple times drying off or just because I forgot. 3. Durability - this was pretty durable considering my puppy is still in the teething phase! he chewed on the straps quite a few times before I caught him but honestly they look pretty good still. 4. Performance - this performed pretty well (9.5/10). My only complaint is that sometimes if he was a little heavier that day (too many treats) I did notice he wasn’t staying as above the water as other times. However, I wouldn’t have gone a size up, due to his actual dimensions. If you have a particularly fat pupper who’s pretty small, this may not work for you for that reason. Overall I would definitely recommend! Very cute and helped him get used to the water. He still isn’t a water doxie but one step at a time! We love these. We bought the medium for our 38lb golden mix, large for our 63lb dane/boxer mix, and the XL for our 88lb monster collie. Literally THE only downside we've found is that the neck strap tends to loosen with use and I have to tighten it again before the next use to ensure it fits snug around their chests and doesn't slip down their back. That's why I docked 1 star. The support cushion for the front of the neck also always flips around on my dane mix so it's facing outwards, but it doesn't seem to really affect anything so who cares. The dane mix got in unexpectedly early into our pool days without her life jacket and sank to the bottom immediately like she was wearing concrete shoes. We were in the pool next to her so her head was only underwater for a second. We immediately picked up life jackets for everyone after that incident. She's still a little nervous about going in where she can't touch, but she has come in with her life jacket on and it has kept her 100% above water. The collie is an experienced swimmer and this just gave her a little extra support so she wouldn't get tired as quickly. The golden mix has swam only a little and was pretty bad at it and nervous about doing it, but this gave him the confidence to swim and he's improved leaps and bounds! The handles are great and we've used them a fair bit to help give the dogs a boost in and out of the pool and in & out of the doggy pool boats we bought them. No complaints there. We've been using them all summer and they show zero signs of wear. The buckles are easy and it's easy to get them in/out of their jackets. We wrote their names on the front handle so it's easy for us to determine which belongs to which dog. We usually dry them out after use by strapping them into our deck railing for a few hours before going into our deck box for storage. They fit well, they're very adjustable, and I would buy them again if I needed more! ... show more

"Dawson" model swim jacket is my fav and my 2 dogs. My small dogs hates wearing anything and she always happily puts this on, and she's not even much of water lover but this is comfortable based on my observation of it's construction and my little ones behavior. I think this is a good vest for beginners or not strong swimmers, and also active swimmers since the style has no material around front legs so it allows for more comfortable range of motion as well. CON = getting the right fit. I had to size down for both my dog's measurements vs the size chart so maybe others need to also. My smaller dog is a solid 17" rib cage girth (all her clothes and harnesses are for 17") and I re-measured her when I ordered this but she fits in XS for this product with the straps almost as short as they go. Odd as XS says the biggest girth is 15" yet the S was still too loose by a couple inches with all straps as short as possible. Likewise my other dog actually fits a M, yet size chart indicated she'd be a L but it was far too big. PROS = *This life vest has excellent boyancy but is not bulky. *It is easy to adjust the straps and then just take off and on by the 3 clips. *It is very secure under the belly and for the chin/chest when it is the right fit for your dogs body type. And the front under chin material is not obnoxiously bulky like other models. *No Velcro! which my dogs hate the sound of and velcro sucks with sand and hair obviously. *The quick grab handle runs vertical with the spine which doesn't create much water resistance as others that have a strap across body left to right. *No chaffing around front legs because there is no material or extra sand to rub near the armpits because of the open front style that doesn't go down & under the center chest and between the front legs. Got this today and threw it on the dog and went to the lake. I love the quality and the feel of the vest. It was easy to put on and adjust. The XL was WAY too big for my yellow lab, who has a girth of 33", but the chocolate lab is wider, so she is inheriting it. She is a strong swimmer, and has never had a vest on before, but she seemed to LOVE it once she started swimming and had an equal advantage with her sister that had a different vest on. After capsizing a jet ski myself over the weekend, and being thankful for my life vest, it was a no brainer to just make sure that all the dogs are in one when they are swimming. The straps seem like they slip out of adjustment, but if you roll up the excess straps and use the velcro to secure it, it will stop it from doing that. So impressed with this vest that I just ordered two more for the other dogs. I did go a size smaller though, Medium for the Pit with a 28" girth and Large for the Yellow with the 33". I would say these run a little on the large size, but they WILL hold your dog up and increase their safety. ... show more

The X-small fit pretty well when I first got my little guy but he gained 1-2 pounds. He’s long and short so it was a little short on his body but fit around. Now it’s too snug. I ordered the small and it’s huge. I can’t get it snugged up tight enough and the X-small won’t go any bigger.
