  • The best pump for an inflatable kayak! Better than Shark II and alternatives.
The OutdoorMaster 16PSI SUP Air Pump is an outstanding pump for an inflatable kayak or SUP. It has a form factor not much larger than the Shark II pump and performs almost identically or possibly a little better, but unlike the Shark II, you can take it anywhere and inflate your kayak or SUP using the integrated battery. It comes with a 12VDC (cigarette lighter style) and an AC (wall outlet) plug, so finding a place to charge it at home or in the car is no problem. Mine took about three hours to recharge, and then a charge lasts for several inflations of my kayak. The kayak I use is an Aquaglide Chelan 155. The side chambers take 3psi, and the floor takes 6psi. The Whale pump is able to inflate all three chambers to the desired pressure in less than 6 minutes. It runs on the high capacity setting until the pressure reaches 1 to 1.5psi, and then the lower capacity high pressure setting kicks in to reach the desired pressure. Upon reaching the pressure (which can be set in 0.5 increments to any value from 0.5 to 16.0 psi), the pump automatically shuts off, but a quiet cooling fan continues to run for approximately three minutes and then it shuts itself off. This is WONDERFUL. Basically, you connect it to the air valve, set the PSI, press the power button to start the pump, and walk away to get other things ready. When the pump shuts off, move it to the next air valve and repeat until the kayak or SUP is fully inflated. Super simple. The pump is moderately noisy like a vacuum during the initial high capacity inflation stage, and quite a bit louder with a throaty rumbling noise like an air compressor after the pressure rises about 1 to 1.5psi. The noisier stage of the pump increases the pressure by approximately 1psi about every 15 to 20 seconds in my case, but this will likely vary depending on the volume of the chamber you're filling. The point is that it's pretty quick. After several inflation cycles, I find that the pump is very consistent. I don't have a separate pressure gauge to verify accuracy, but I trust that it's very close to the psi shown on the screen and have no concerns about overinflating. Nevertheless, on hot days, I usually set the psi about 0.5psi lower than the manufacturer specified amount in order to leave a little room for atmospheric expansion as the sunlight heats the kayak throughout the day. This seems to work well. I have not used the pump to deflate my kayak, as the valves on the Chelan 155 make it very easy to deflate manually and I prefer to leave it loosely rolled in the bed of my truck (so it can breathe and dry better) instead of trying to squeeze it smaller to stow in the original storage bag. I suspect it works fine and is probably much faster to deflate since the internal pressure of the kayak or SUP will be working with the pump to vacate the air. There's really no reason to get the Shark II pump now that the Whale is available. It's all the benefits of that pump in a nicer, more portable package that makes it well worth the additional ~$50 cost. The Whale gives you the flexibility to inflate the kayak or SUP wherever you choose, instead of having to be close to an outlet, and it can also be taken along on extended trips when you may need to reinflate or adjust the pressure of your inflatable as temperatures swing throughout the day or night. Best of all, it seems to have PLENTY of battery power for a couple of SUPs or, in the case of my kayak (which inflates to a lower pressure than many SUPs), at least four or five inflations before I feel like I should charge it. Simply awesome. I highly recommend it. ... show more

  • Fully inflates two Body Glove Performer 11 paddleboards
We purchased two inflatable paddle boards (Body Glove Performer 11 from Costco) last year. The downside of inflatable boards is that they require a great deal of manual pumping just to get to 15psi. With our boards that works out to 300-350 pumps with the included manual air pump, per board. To me, having to manually pump 700 times before I can even ride the board defeats the purpose of having inflatable boards. I purchased a competitor's battery operated pump before this one (lower cost). The reviews said the pump could pump up two paddle boards or more on one charge. It did fill the boards about 1/3 of the way before it stopped pumping, leaving me to pump the other 2/3. I sent it back. I'm happy to say this Outdoormaster 16psi pump does exactly what I need it to do. It pumps up both our Bodyglove Performer 11 paddle boards ALL THE WAY to 15psi (the max pressure for our boards). Yay, no manual pumping now. It might even do more boards, as there is still battery left, but I have no need to find out. It also does a great job of deflating the boards, which is so much easier than trying to squeeze out the last remaining air before you roll it up. The only negative I can give on this pump is the lack of a carrying case. That should be standard. If you have the Bodyglove Performer 11 paddle board and you want a pump that will fill your board (and more), buy this pump. ... show more

  • A bit on the loud side... but works great!
Great quality portable SUP air pump that does its job very well! On a full charge, I was able to fill up AND deflate 2 paddle boards with ease. Only lost 1 notch on the battery meter. Comes with a bunch of nozzle attachments too which is nice! My only gripe with this pump is it's on the loud side, so just be aware of that if you're planning on using this in a public area. ... show more

  • Great pump, do it!
I just wanted to come on real quick to say that I had a hard time justifying the price of the pump. You’re probably in the same boat right now. After trying a cheaper unit, I knew this was what I wanted so I went ahead and pulled the trigger. As luck would have it, my unit shipped with a small defect in the battery; all worked perfectly but the battery would only show it was charging to about half way. Never presented a problem with my sup as I never needed a full battery, but all in the same, I paid good money and wanted a perfect unit. So I was very pleasantly surprised that Outdoor Master immediately had a replacement unit out to me the same day, received 2 days later, no questions asked, and invited me to donate my first unit. If there was ever anything that would push me over the finish line in paying for something, it’s the comfort of good customer service and them standing behind their product. I hope this helps you make up your mind. ... show more

  • Portable power with nice features
Bought this for my stand up paddle board. I have an Atoll SUP that recommends 15 psi. Charged up the pump at home (took about 90 minutes) to get it to full charge. At the lake set the psi on the pump to 15 on the digital display Pump has multiple attachments to fit a variety of plugs. One fit my Atoll perfectly. Pump starts off in ‘low’ then auto switches to ‘high’ to finish off the board. Took 10-12 minutes to reach 15 psi. Pump auto shut off at my selected psi. The pump display the desired psi selection and a live psi as it inflated. Pump still had full battery bars showing after pumping the board to completion. Later on deflated the board using the pump. You switch the house location on the unit and it was ‘literally’ a breeze. One nice extra feature is the pump has a light which was nice at dusk when packing up to go home. You can see it in one of the pictures I attached. Only feature I wish the pump had was back lighting on the buttons. Overall very happy with my purchase. When we add a second sup this unit will have no problem inflating both of them. ... show more
