Format: Out Of This World

Description

'Out Of This World', the band's eighteenth studio album, with 15 new tracks, spanning 70 minutes of energetic and incredibly diverse material- though still very much recognizable as Kayak. It is clear that the new found energy has gained even more momentum since Hans Eijkenaar rejoined the group. Although they were forced to cancel all tours because Ton Scherpenzeel suffered a heart attack at the end of 2019, and immediately after that because of the Covid pandemic, we're hearing a band that, since the demise of Pim Koopman in 2009, has not sounded more together, balanced and motivated.

  • Hopefully, this album is not the swan song of this great Dutch band
I have been a fan of Kayak since the mid seventies when I saw Phantom Of The Night and Starlight Dancer in the cut out bins for dirt cheap. Music fans in the USA simply had no appreciation for the great music from this band. As I played those albums, neighbors came over to ask who it was, which was the ultimate compliment. I have lost touch with this band because they only play in their native Holland and their CD's are VERY expensive. Thanks to Inside Out Music in the USA, this release is now readily available at a good price. One reviewer mentioned that this could be their swan song because founding member Ton Scherpenzeel is not exactly in the best of health. If this is indeed their last album, then they went out in glorious form! Out of 15 cuts, only 2 are what I would consider as throw aways. Traitor's Gate sound like a reject from Toto. PUH-LEEZE!!!! Waiting sounds like a leftover from the disco era in the USA, and placed right after the stellar title track. For those wanting prog, only four tracks exceed 6 minutes in length: Out Of This World, Critical Mass, Under A Scar, and A Writer's Tale. The remaining 11 cuts run 4.5 minutes or less and it is amazing how they can create progressive rock in such a short time space. And no, this is not your father's or grandfather's Kayak, but leader Ton can still find the finest musicians to keep this great music going. ... show more
