Frequently asked questions

Setting up the Celestron Advanced VX Mount involves carefully assembling the tripod, attaching the mount to the tripod, and securely fastening the dual saddle plate on top. Begin by extending the tripod legs and locking them into place, then mount the VX Mount onto the tripod's head. Ensure all connections are tight and secure. Attach your telescope to the dual saddle plate, making sure it's well balanced. Finally, align the mount using the Celestron Polar Axis Finder to ensure accurate tracking.

The Celestron Polar Axis Finder is designed specifically for use with the Advanced VX Mount and other compatible Celestron mounts. It is not universally compatible with all telescope mounts. Its purpose is to assist in the precise polar alignment of the Advanced VX Mount, which is crucial for accurate tracking and astrophotography.

The Advanced VX Mount with Dual Saddle Plate is versatile and can support a wide range of telescopes, including refractors, reflectors, and catadioptric telescopes. The dual saddle plate design allows for the mounting of both Vixen (V-style) and Losmandy (D-style) dovetail bars, providing compatibility with many telescope models. Just ensure the total setup weight does not exceed the mount's maximum payload capacity.

Polar alignment with the Celestron Polar Axis Finder involves aligning the mount's polar axis with the Earth's axis of rotation, which is near Polaris (the North Star) in the Northern Hemisphere. The Polar Axis Finder provides a reticle with a pattern that you align with Polaris or a specific point in the sky, depending on your location. By adjusting the mount's altitude and azimuth controls, you can align the mount accurately, ensuring smooth tracking of celestial objects across the sky.

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The product speaks for itself through the mixed range of meticulous and novice astronomers' reviews. With most users appreciating its durability, advanced features compared to previous models, and improved usability for astrophotography, it's clear this mount is a significant upgrade for many. A few concerns were mentioned about weight and the polar scope's usefulness, but these do not detract significantly from the overall positive reception.

Pros

  • 🔭 Upgraded features from previous models, like fixed finder scope and non-rotating dec housing
  • 🌌 Accepts both Vixen and CGE style dovetails, increasing compatibility
  • 👍 USB hand controller avoids the need for serial adapters, enhancing ease of use
  • 🌑 Quieter operation compared to older mounts, plus better latitude adjustments
  • 💼 Additional ports for wireless accessories and improved accessory support overall

Cons

  • 🏋️ Heavy and may be challenging to manage for some, particularly with age or mobility concerns
  • 📡 Lack of built-in GPS, requiring additional purchase
  • ⚖️ Issues with balance and the mention of polar scope being "useless" for some users
  • 🕶 Some settings may be lost from session to session, noted by a user as a minor annoyance

Should I Buy It?

If you are an amateur or seasoned astronomer looking for an upgrade and you value stability, improved features, and are willing to manage its significant weight, this mount is a stellar choice. However, might want to consider the additional cost for a GPS unit if that feature is critical for you.

  • Upgraded from CG5-ASGT
So I almost had buyers remorse after ordering this scope.. I read all these bad reviews and wondered if I should have kept my CG5-ASGT. When the scope arrived, I was still unsure what I was dealing with. The castings looked nicer, the plastic housings were better placed, but I was not sure how I felt about the knobs, usb port vs serial, etc. I have to say after playing with the mount for about a week it is superior compared to the CG5-ASGT. Now, I loved my ASGT. It was a great little mount, but there were a few things that I did not like about it: 1) Finder scope cap. Always falling off. This is fixed in the AVX... it solidly screws into place. 2) The moving dec housing... it can bind or tangle. Fixed in the AVX.. it does not rotate. 3) Dovetail mount.. it's ok.. but the AVX accepts both vixen and CGE (losmandy) style dovetails. Nice. 4) Hand controller felt very light and flimsy. The AVX hand controller is slightly heavier, and has USB so no serial adapter needed. Thought I would not like this, but after using it, I do like that I don't need to fight with drivers. Worked on my macbook first try. 5) Counterweight bar is short... it's longer on the AVX. 6) Latitude adjustments are fragile.. fixed on the AVX... they went from 1/4" to 3/8". MUCH better. 7) Noise.. the ASGT sounds like a coffee grinder. The AVX is magnitudes quieter. 8) Dovetail design.. dovetail slides into place rather than rocking into place. I sort of liked rocking it into place, but the fact that it can not fall out easily I guess that's a plus. You must slide it out. 9) Hand controller cradle... old one worked but did not hold the controller firmly. New one is a little more rigid. 10) Accessories... the old mount did not support new wireless accessories. The new mount has 2 aux ports for wireless, etc. 11) Home position arrows. The original ASGT arrows were just stickers.. same as Meade's LXD mounts. The AVX has nice milled in slots painted white. Yay finally. I really tried to find a reason to not be entirely happy with my Advance VX mount vs the ASGT.. but I couldn't really find one. I think the AVX is a nice upgrade. It's just sort of a "refined" CG5. Minor changes here and there which add up. The castings are much heavier duty and overall the mount is beefed up quite a bit. I'm not sure why a previous reviewer found the polar scope "useless". It works perfectly fine. My skies are not dark enough to need a flash light to see the markings. If his skies are that dark, I envy him. Usually I set up just at sunset anyway as soon as I can see polaris. The markings on the polar scope are obvious and easy to see, but even at night I can see them easily against the glow of the sky. You could always set up at sunset and then it would be very easy to see the reticle. These mounts can be found for as low as $450 on the used market which is a steal. Loaded mine up with a C8, 9x50 RA finder, + piggy back DSLR, no problems at all very solid. ... show more

  • Great
Trying to learn a new astronomy mount, polar alignment for a more accurate track of planets and stars.

  • Good strong mount tracks well
Only had it out a few nights so far. Seems to track over 2 minute exposures most of the time just fine. Found a few tricks so far. One polar align to polaris correctly don't be lazy and all star align. People sailed the ocean's way before gps. Two add the 4 maximum calibration stars not just 1 or 2..Counter balance everything correctly. It only comes with a 11lbs weight so you may need a smaller weight so the weight doesn't ride close to the top and hit the mount. Keep the clutches loose as possible. 90% of bad reviews are people lazy and set in there wrong ways. Or they used it wrong and broke it... All mounts require practice and patience. Ready for the auto guider next. Attached is 50 minutes of 2 minute exposures of the lagoon nebula on a svbony ed 80. Second is the north American nebula on a svbony ed80 no autoguider 7x 2min exposures with svbony UHC eos clip in filter ... show more

  • Good mount, but some quality issues and the polar scope is useless
FIrst of all, the mount is awesome in the sense that it can be really accurate and the catalogue allows you to move to nebulas I was never able to find 'by hand' before - so that is great. Learning how to use the system was also fairly straight forward, needed some testing in daylight and one dummy run night. COuld see nebulas star clusters, doubles ect the second night, so its not truly difficult to use BUT, the polar scope is completely useless. You can not see the markings on the glass in the dark, you need to use a flashlight to light the edge so you can see the etched in polar star. Ultimately this is not necessary to use since the calibration process in the system will take care of it anyway, just align roughly towards polar and you are good with this mount, the scope is not needed Settings get lost from one day to another, which is annoying and the end cap of the counterweight rod did not fit right. If I use the cap the system grinds up and gets stuck, removing it makes the mount work, but looks a bit odd - so that is one star less for poor quality, QC control Its mu first go-to mount, so it does what it was supposed to do and is very sturdy (read heavy), power supply is best used a jump pack from a car. ... show more

  • The mount turned out to be better than I had hoped for
The mount turned out to be better than I had hoped for. The quality of the equatorial mount is excellent and the Go-To function works very well. The mount is very sturdy, eliminating shaky views of planets, etc... The only downside for me, it is some what heavy for my 85 year old body. However, with a little planning, I have been able to overcome the this problem. All in all, this is the mount to buy for the long haul. Joe Gap ... show more

  • Excellent mount for most amateur astrophotographer
The mount and the tripod is very heavy and stable, the go-to feature is very accurate you can see the target with very little tweak, and it can handle my telescope ed80 with Auto with no problem at all. The package is very good, arrived on time and no problem. What I dislike about it: -There is no built-in GPS, you have to buy separate device -There is no bubble level, yes no bubble level! But it's OK you don't have to be super accurate with the level, polar alignment is the most important one -The polar scope for me is useless, I use sharp cap instead. -I wish in the future they add more objects and stars when doing the star alignment, the list that they offer is very short.. The dec and RA are very rigid so I can't do proper weight balance. For the price I will give it five stars. And i will use this mount and will keep updating you. Thanks ... show more

Works OK. I haven't got it to do a great polar alignment and there is a bit of a learning curve to all the settings. I am new to this so some of it is probably me.
