  • Ample Beginner Kit. Acceptable Sound & Appearance.
Size: Full Color: Brown
I’m a professional musician who plays many instruments, though I consider myself to be just okay at the violin. I ordered this beginner violin in the color “Brown,” which looks more traditional than the other fun colors. Looking only at its appearance, no serious musician will be fooled into thinking this is a quality instrument, but it definitely looks passable enough for a brand new student likely to accidentally bang it up. It’s good to break clumsy habits on a cheap instrument anyway. It arrived requiring some assembly, which is common for violins being shipped so as to prevent certain types of damage. While it was loosely strung upon arrival, one string had broken free, and of course, I had to install the bridge before fixing the string and then tuning it up. If you’ve never worked with a violin before, you may want to find an instructional video detailing how to string and tune it. If you got this for a child just starting out on the violin in something like a school orchestra, you should just let their instructor handle it while teaching your child. It’s easy enough to string and tune, and once the strings aren’t so new, they’ll hold their tuning a bit better, which is typical of strings. While you should rosin the bow before each play session, you’ll have to really lay the rosin on thick before playing with this bow for the first time; otherwise, you won’t produce much sound. The sound quality of this violin is acceptable, especially for a beginner instrument. If you’ve already been playing for a while and are looking for an upgrade, then you should move on; but, if you’re just looking to test the waters, then this will suffice. You’ll definitely be able to produce all the correct notes (with practice), but you’ll be limited in your musical expression. What’s really great about this violin is that it comes with everything you need to get you playing as a beginner without a ton of extra shopping, other than for sheet music or lessons. Most impressive to me is the hard-shell case with zipper. This case is actually a lot better than the one paired with a much better violin I already owned, so I’m considering switching them out. Overall, this is a fine beginner violin with lots of great extras for an extremely fair price. If you’re thinking about just trying the violin but aren’t ready to commit to a more expensive instrument, then I think this is a great option. ... show more

  • A decent starter fiddle/violin
Size: Full Color: Brown
First, consider this a 3.5 star review. Since we can't do halves, I had to choose between 3 and 4 ... and this JUST falls to 3 rather than 4. Not because it's bad. It's not. I don't think a 3 is bad. I think it's *okay*, and that's what this is. It's okay. As starter violins/fiddles goes, this is fine. You get what you pay for, and that's not a bad thing. You or the new player in your life will be able to start to develop their chops on it and will get comfortable with the instrument using it. It won't be the one they use for years to come, and that's okay. That's not what it's meant for. One big plus: it comes with pretty much everything you need to get started. Case, strings, bow, tuner, and much more. For that alone, it's a nice package for someone getting started but who doesn't want to spend a lot of money. ... show more

  • It will play
Size: Full Color: Black
I was "that kid" in elementary school who played cello. Since I was the only one, I was in the same class as violin, so I could play both. Granted, it was twinkle twinkle little star, but could play both. So was excited to get this, been over 40 years, forgot a few things. This does require a bit of assembly. You must loosen the strings and install the bridge (not installed in pictures), and then tune. The big wooden pegs get you close, but the "fine tuning" on the other end is awesome! I never had those. Just get the pegs to a note or two below what you need, and those fine tuning will dial it right in. Once tuned, it will be out of tune. The instrument is adjusting to neck tension, humidity, strings are stretching. It will probably be a week or two before it will stay in time more than 10 minutes. The bow comes without rosen (there is a block included). This is what caused the strings to vibrate and make sound. It takes a good 15-20 minutes to get enough on it to make a sound. I think it will take 16-20 more to get consistent sound. This is a lot smaller than I remember, but I was much smaller back then. I think it is a 4/4, but maybe on the smaller end of those. And it feels very light. It is wood, but feels "toy like." Once I got it all together, I got a few notes out of it. I realized I don't remember much at all, so not able to play the easiest song. For where I am, this will work. I do not think it is concert quality, but if you played in elementary school, want to see if you remember anything (and your parents got rid of your instrument when you have it up), this is fun. If you really want to start playing again, and progressed beyond 3rd grade, you may opt for something better. But I suspect, with some practice, soon I will sound just as good as I did 40+ years ago. ... show more

  • Beginner level violin set with everything you need to get started
Size: 3/4 Color: Brown
You will need to know how to set up your bridge and strings properly before playing. The set includes two bridges, a set of strings (already attached) and an extra set of strings, a digital tuner, bow, rosin, micro fiber cleaning cloth and a carrying case. I got the 3/4 size which is your step from the 1/2 size and would be appropriate for the age group of 9-11 years old. This is a beginner violin that if set up and adjusted properly will be for the elementary students lessons and practicing. It holds tuning, with higher action to the strings without modifying the bridge. Lightweight, with a high gloss finish produces a bright sound. This is not a recital violin, but its quality is playable with the proper setting up and may be a much better option then renting for your school aged beginner. ... show more
