  • A thoughtful treatment of mental suffering and our responsibility
I underlined a lot of sections in this book. I gave my underlined copy to one of my children for Christmas and bought myself another one. I have lived with mental health issues almost my entire life. This book is encouraging for those who deal with mental health issues and mental suffering without a diagnosis. Alan Noble also challenges us to decide to get out of bed and get on with life. We have a responsibility to those around us. Buy this book. Read it. Read it again. It is a classic. ... show more

  • Good, Beautiful, and True
As someone who has spent the majority of his educational & professional career thinking about our mental, emotional, and relational lives from a distinctively Christian perspective, I cannot overstate how much I appreciate Alan’s book. When you read it, you won’t see any ground-breaking counseling theories or techniques. You won’t discover quick fixes or simple solutions. You won’t find all the answers to all the questions that may haunt you. But if you are familiar with mental suffering and anguish, and if you have ever been tempted to just…. quit, God will likely minister to you through Alan’s words: You’ll be strengthened. And challenged. You’ll be reminded of some helpful truths. You’ll be pointed to the One who calls and holds you. And you’ll know you aren’t alone. Alan writes with just the right tone needed by those who may be struggling. A steadiness without sensationalism. A determination without drama. There is gentle firmness in his words – the kind I would want if I was having trouble figuring out how to get out of bed and make it through another day. He also writes as one familiar with mental suffering. This isn’t a memoir, but it is clear Alan is a co-laborer with others who work hard at perseverance. Along the way, he models what he wants for his readers – neither denying nor advertising his own suffering. In the most compelling parts, the book reads like a letter of encouragement from a dear friend – with just the right amount of patience and grace and exhortation – to help you figure out how (and why) to keep going. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Buy an extra copy to have on hand when someone you know needs it. ... show more

  • From a Fellow Sufferer
This is a special book. Special because it gives those who have suffered under the weight of a mental illness words that demonstrate someone does understand and that you are not alone. Noble writes as a fellow sufferer who, at minimum, puts words to what the sufferer feels and thinks. That alone made me feel known and understood. It is also special because for those who have never understood the thoughts and feelings of a loved one who suffers, this book can help them better understand and bear the burden of their loved one. Noble doesn’t shy away from all the ugly and nasty parts of mental illness. However, he points to the goodness of creation, the gift of life, and the God who understands, sees, and loves those who are suffering. “for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.” -1 John 3:20 ... show more

  • An excellent meta-view of mental illness & suffering
I read this book with a friend. Reading it was comforting and inspiring. I don't usually struggle with literally getting out of bed, but anxiety, fear, indecision, and just life sometimes paralyse me and freeze me in hours of doom-scrolling social media. I won't forget this book and plan to re-read it often. ... show more

  • A Tremendous Encouragement
So often, the Christian world is full of spiritual-sounding yet unhelpful messages for those who struggle with mental health issues. In this excellent book, Alan Noble walks through various categories of "mental suffering" and reminds us that these things are neither unexpected nor something that can be easily borne on our own. Instead, he points again and again to God's grace and love and how it can be modeled in the life of the suffering believer. He does not settle for easy answers or the pithy, reductionist statements so often echoed in church (let go and let God, too blessed to be depressed). Instead, he reminds us that "your task is to be faithful: to do the next thing . . . we all bear witness to the goodness of this existence God has given us. That witness has the power to move mountains . . . and it's beautiful; even while we suffer, it's beautiful" (p. 103). This book has been a tremendous encouragement for me, and I highly recommend it to all who suffer mental anguish, have suffered it, or will suffer it. The love and hope we have only in Christ shines through every page, and I am grateful to have read it. ... show more

  • Good balance of Grace and Truth
The author is honest and does not minimize mental suffering. He can clearly relate. But neither does he let us off the hook regarding our obligations to God and to others around us.

  • I have words to my feelings now
Had my wife read it after I read it to have me and my condition be better understood. Feels good to have words to put to feelings.

  • Mixed feelings
As someone who has clinical depression, I have mixed feelings about this book. I thought the author did a really great job at explaining what can go through someone's mind when they are in a depressed or anxious state. His main point on why to get out of bed every morning did not sit well with me, I can't quite explain why though. There also was a good bit of back and forth of knowing when to push through a depressive state and knowing when to step back and take care of yourself. It was unclear and so it would be difficult to put into practice. I may reread this book at a later time (it is a fairly quick read) to see if I have any changed thoughts or opinions. ... show more
