Description

As a mother, Cheryl E. Musick would have done anything for her daughter. But when a devastating addiction wreaks havoc on her family, she realizes that sometimes a mother’s love simply isn’t enough. In The Day the Musick Died, Cheryl shares the story of her bubbly, talented daughter Misty and the drug addiction that eventually took her life.As Cheryl writes in her introduction, she hoped one day to write a book with Misty about triumphing over addiction. Tragically, that book will never exist. Instead, Cheryl pours her love for her daughter into this memoir and lets you see Misty the way Cheryl did. Misty may not be the coauthor of this narrative, but her presence is felt on every page.Cheryl’s hopes for her daughter did not come to pass, but she continues to have hope for the thousands of people out there struggling with addiction. She is adamant that no one—neither addicts nor their loved ones—should ever give up fighting for sobriety and reconciliation. She wants Misty’s story to be a message of optimism, a source of strength and inspiration for all those who have lost their way. Read more

  • Powerful and REAL
Format: Paperback
Cheryl pours her heart out in these pages and lays hers heart bare with incredible honesty, love and HOPE. She writes with an urgent compassion wrought from the depths of loss and grief from her own daughter and gives raw account into the life of an addict from her own experience. She communicates a rare balance of truth and love and gives hope to those struggling with addiction. She also isn't afraid to point out her own mistakes and shortcomings. This is an incredible read for anyone who is trapped in addiction or knows someone who is. There is hope! ... show more

  • Powerful, honest, urgent. A must-read.
Format: Kindle
Some life experiences are so unquestionably singular and personal that we cannot relate to nor conjure real awareness of them—nor imagine we have any genuine understanding about them—unless we have lived such an experience ourselves. In this brave memoir, author Cheryl Musick nakedly attempts to chronicle her own tortured journey as the desperate parent of a daughter who is first seduced into and then stubbornly chooses a life of enslavement to hard drugs, to her and her family’s consternation and demise. With more courage than most would have, Musick delivers on her promise “...to be as open, honest and vulnerable as I can in sharing the love and promise, the triumphs and setbacks, the anguish and the yearning for a new start along this journey that continues on to this day.” ※ I have a daughter who I love with all my heart. Not only can I not begin to imagine what this experience would have been like, but I cannot imagine myself being as brave as this author in baring myself to the world about it, thus opening myself to criticism as well as embrace. ※ Is this writer perfect? Did she do everything right? Was she righteous and surefooted in every moment? Of course not. But such is the essence of this little book, an all-too-human account of one parent’s plough through this unique Hell, how it was experienced by her and her family, and how it changed everything for every person who had meaning in her daughter’s life. For one who relates to the parents in this story or one who might themselves be trapped in the quicksand of drug abuse, this reflection will encourage you—from experience—that “Somehow, some way, someday, addicts and those who love them [can and] will break these chains and live the lives they are meant to live.” ※ Obviously I encourage you to read this book. No doubt you will benefit. ~ Jim H - Boise, ID USA ... show more

  • any family dealing with drug use of a loved one should read this book
Format: Paperback
Anyone struggling with addiction anyone fighting for sobriety, any family dealing with drug use of a loved one should read this book. A sad devastating true story that brought tears not only to my eyes but through my heart for this mother and daughter. This story of a young woman that was once very charismatic, talented, full of life with a loving husband, children and wonderful family found herself dabbling into drugs and soon a life of bad choices that would put her behind bars for her actions. Her mother (the author of this book) soon realized her daughter had fallen into a world of drugs and criminal behavior (this was not her daughter) this was not the life her daughter wanted, it was the life her daughter felt she had no choice but to live since she had become addicted to the most dangerous and powerful street drugs, crystal meth and heroin, she tried one treatment center but was not thrilled of the outcome therefore she no longer believed treatment would work for her, she was going to kick it on her own terms she would not go into rehab again unless it was stipulated to do so by the courts. (To me…this was a wake up call to our justice system!) This young woman seem to have reached a turning point while she was incarnated and really wanted to stay clean once she was released. She had a loving mother, father, siblings and friends who were doing all they could to get the courts to stipulate drug rehab as part of her probation along with the drug testing that was part of her probation. The laws to get this young woman the help she so desperately needed were not mandated once she was released back into everyday society and she soon fell back into a world of drugs and criminal behavior that would eventually play a part in this young woman’s death. This young woman's mother (the author) is now reaching out to others that have been placed in the same situation she found herself in, in order to help…before anymore hurt. ... show more

  • Great book for anyone who is going through addiction or familys of the addict to read!!!
Format: Paperback
Very good book! Definitely would be a good book for anyone to read who is dealing with addiction or dealing with a family member or friend who is in the grasps of addiction. It is a very eye opening story! I see this book helping many addicts and families. Misty was a sweet person, she once helped me when I was about 9 or 10 deal with homesickness on a camping trip, She was a comfort to me and also the only one who was nice to me about my homesickness. I remember the family we were camping with had had it with my attitude of homesickness, my crying and depression and refusing to eat, but Misty understood and tried to make the trip better for me and got me involved to try to remedy the homesickness I was having. Best time during that trip was when all 4 of us girls did peach face masks on our faces. ... show more

This book is a must read for everyone! I have known the author most of my life and I admire her willingness to share this important story about her daughter Misty. Cheryl was not afraid to be transparent and real in this book and I believe many lives will be saved because of that. Share it with your teenagers and don't be afraid to talk to them about these things with them. Addiction affects so many around us and Cheryl inspires us in this book to reach out and fight for those who are suffering around us. This book will move you to your core! ... show more
