Just over a year ago we bought our first home. A charming little home that was built in 1910. When we toured the home it was vacant, had been for a little while, and had MAJOR old house smell going on. We knew that was something that you had to be okay with if you were going to live in an old house. It would, SURPRISE, smell old. We moved in, aired things out, and the old smell faded to what a normal old house smells like. But the fading of that smell unmasked something so hideous, I question to this day how we missed it. Cat pee. CAT PEE. The most acrid, disgusting cat pee smell you can imagine. We tried everything to get rid of the smell from one corner of our living room. This is such a great product! I live in a basement apartment and we often pick up smells from the upstairs apartment and outdoors as well as having 3 dogs indoors. This is set up in my back room where there is a problem with moisture and it really works to keep the air in the room smelling and feeling fresh. The good: Tower design, doesn't take up much space. Cool little blue light that glows and looks rather like a disco... this thing barely ever needs to be cleaned. I have checked it at all the recommended times and gone through the cleaning process but it seems to barely get dirty. Nice feature. It is very quiet and noninvasive. It can be used with any decor really, actually mine is barely noticed. I do know it works though. I originally bought this for the room because I have asthma and was having some breathing problems. Since I've used this for a few months now, I've actually had zero problems. Guess it works pretty ok. Another thing I have noticed is that this does not attract dust to it. I have had other filters that would just circulate the air through filters and the dust seemed to really collect nearby, with this little unit that isn't happening. The bad: The plastic used to make the body of this unit looks a little cheap to me, the design is just a bit too simple. I think if the design had a little more flair the unit would look a lot more contemporary without adding any cost to its manufacture. Only other thing that comes to mind as a negative is that the fan on this unit is very weak. It works and isn't supposed to be a fan as such, but I expected it to move a little bit of air, which is does not. This is not a fan. All in all this is a great unit for keeping the air in the room fresh and helps in removing pollutants from the air. It helps with my asthma and I would recommend it for that alone. It is simple in design and noninvasive in feature. It fits into any decor without causing an eyesore. It runs quietly and the low light blue light that it emits when it is on is comforting and soothing to the eye. I live in a moist atmosphere in a basement and it helps to keep the musty smell out of the air. The fan on it is very low-key, so don't expect it to be used as a room fan, it's simply not one. I would buy this again and in fact am intending to do so for the bedrooms. I'm impressed.

I really can't fully review this yet. I may come back in 4-6 months to update. Since it's too soon for me to fully evaluate this ionic air purifier ionizer, I'm only giving it 4 stars. The price & design are both good. I'm not sure how often one should remove & clean the collection plate. I bought this (and a small tabletop portable ionizer with ozone option) to augment my large Coway Airmega & my larger (pet) Levoit & small Levoit in my small home office. None of these HEPA air purifiers provide ionization option which, I understand, is beneficial. I have to say that the air purifiers have made an enormous difference in my apartment in terms of dust. I think dust accumulation is at least 80% less since buying & running them consistently. I also have a small combo air purifier-dehumidifier in my bathroom. This OION is small enough to move around easily & not take up much space, whether on the floor or on a table top. From what I have read & understand, placement of ionization devices is important, especially to avoid black marks on walks or ceilings. I read that positioning near my apartment AC/heat unit is beneficial because the cooling system's blower fan helps circulate the charged ions throughout the entire room. However, you must keep the unit far enough away to avoid moisture damage from AC condensation or frozen coils. I'm hoping I will find it enhances dust & allergen removal even more & provide that noticeable fresher air quality that ionization provides. I've noted some people say it makes them sleep better and feel better, but no clue if that is indeed true. WIll have to return to my review in several months to update.

I bought this because I saw a review that said it did a great job eliminating litter box smells. The price is fantastic for what it does. The litter box is in the bathroom next to the toilet and I perched this on the toilet tank lid. I removed the Febreeze room deodorant since I didn't need the filter to be filtering out deodorizer as well as litter smell. Twice the cat has pooped and there was nothing! At this early stage, I am cautiously optimistic about this filter. It is very quiet on high and given that it's on the toilet in the bathroom, it's not audible in the rest of our apartment. The only con I can find is the carbon filter seems like it plays no roll and is quite expensive to replace. I don't see a way of pulling the filter apart to put in replacement foam so a filter replacement seems to be the only way. For such a small filter with no air moving through it (it sits between the UV lamp and the top of the ionic filter rod) it is stated to be replaced every 6 months. I don't see how a thin foam carbon filter could possibly last that long. I think it's mostly a cover for the UV lamp that they put filter material in so they could say it has a carbon filter. If it does actually do something, I will know 6 months from now. All that said, it is doing an amazing job and I do recommend for litter box odor control.

I purchased this 8 years ago as of time of review. It does work well in terms of ozone generation - not too much but just enough you notice it. It supplies a nice gentle breeze felt only if you are within a couple feet of it and has a small serviceable air filter after the rather impressive brushless cage fan. The good pretty much ends there. The aluminum particle collector does the job but it stains and does not clean off with simple soap and water. I must question if it is even as effective with the stains since it doesn't seem to attract any degree of particle building where the stains are. See photo. The UV-C bulb failed after about 3 years of constant use. See photo. I finally remembered this and got around to replacing the bulb. I could not find a listing for it anywhere but other reviewers mentioned messaging OION to purchase a new one. I did just that to find that they no longer sell the UV-C bulb but they offered me 40% off of a brand new unit - no thank you. The bulb may be proprietary as I have yet to find one with the same connector which is a JST-XH connector commonly found in hobby grade battery balance charging applications. I did find UV-C bulbs that appeared to be the same one but with a Tamiya plug connector. While it's an easy splice to make this work I don't see the point in the long run because the provided UV-C bulb probably did not make much of a difference in air purification anyway. There are plenty of air purifiers on the market this size with significantly larger and brighter UV-C bulbs that are common at electrical supply and many hardware stores. One more aspect of replacing the UV-C bulb is the amount of disassembly just to access it. See photo. It's clear to see this was never intended to be a serviceable part. Given these factors I was possibly a bit generous to award this unit 3 out of 5 stars but I did really like it for a while before I came privy to a few major shortcomings in design and supply. I cannot recommend this product to anyone because of this.

I had to send this unit back to Amazon and I did not even plug it in yet to even try it. I heard something rattling around inside the unit when I took it out of the box and looked through the vent and it was a small glass type bead. Upon closer look I saw the same type glass bead mounted on a wire and next to that was an identical wire but it was missing the glass type bead and that was what was rolling around inside the unit. This appears to be a major component of this ionizer. All the great reviews of this product and mine arrives with a defect. It figures. I did not order another one because it did not seem very high quality and I spent some extra time reading all the reviews and it seems there are a lot of problem reviews about this product that seem to make the production of this unit in China seem inconsistent. The problem with things made in China is often the first shipment container ordered from a manufacturer is great because they want your business and then reorder shipments can be problematic from what Chinese importers I know tell me. Unless they actually own the factory it is tough to keep quality standards consistent. I ended up buying a Whirlpool Whispure AP51030K instead for $295. Consumerreports.org which I subscribe to for $30 a year rated Whirlpool the highest rating of 74. Blueair 650E which retails for $850 got a 65 rating. Honeywell was rated a 38 to 56 for various models. Holmes was rated a 29. This Whirlpool Whispure AP51030K is the most expensive air cleaner to operate out of all they tested but I found some aftermarket filters from Crucial Air HEPA Air Purifier Filter & 4 Odor Neutralizing Carbon Pre Filters; Fits Whirlpool Whispure Air Purifier Models AP350, AP450, AP510 & AP51030K; Compare to Filter Part # 8171434K, 1183054, 1183054K, 1183054K Large, 1183054K Grand Format on Amazon that get 4 star reviews that are 1/2 the price as Whirlpool filter so the first year the pre-filters and hepa replacement cost in only $70 but if your home is smoke free you would only need to replace the hepa filter every 18 months which would cut down filter cost to about $40 a year. You will only need to replace the prefilter every 3 months and they are cheap 4-Pack High Efficiency Odor Neutralizing Whirlpool Carbon Pre Filter; Compare to Filter Part # 8171434K; Designed and Engineered by Crucial Air I am going to buy a separate ionizer that is high quality further down the road. I think owning two quality units is the way to go. and over the long haul I will save money because I have high rated quality units that outperform any other units on the market so air quality will be A+ vs. C or B-

This review is of the OION Technologies B-1000 Permanent Filter Ionic Air Purifier Pro Ionizer with UV-C Sanitizer, New (Black). The observations I make here may apply to other air purifiers that use similar technology. Short version (TL;DR): it works very well for my purpose (eliminate cat-pee smell upstairs). Background: we converted our upstairs guest bathroom into a cat-litter box room. We have four cats, and we're trying to minimize the inappropriate pee-ing by providing a cat-litter box on the 2nd floor (the other 4 cat-boxes are in the basement). The cats have really taken well to the upstairs cat-litter box, but the smell is a problem. If we don't deal with (empty) the box EVERY SINGLE MORNING, the accumulation of cat-urine creates a cloud of cat-pee smell that permeates the upstairs and wafts down the steps into the main floor. Doing the cat box every morning HELPS, but by night-time, well, it's not quite enough. I tried a near-HEPA filter blower in the bathroom (where the cat box is located), but it didn't seem to help at all. Maybe a *TRUE* HEPA filter would have done the trick, but I'm a) skeptical and b) unwilling to commit to buying a rather expensive set of filters every month. So I checked around looking for air purifiers that use other (non-filtration) technology, specifically ionization. The theory is that the electrical apparatus inside the device will put a charge on the offensive-smelling particles and then stick them onto the washable element inside the device using that electrostatic charge. This actually does work. Many of the ionization-based air purifiers *also* claim to put ionized particles into the air of the room, gripping onto airborne particles, making them heavier and causing them to drop to the floor. I can't speak to whether that works. I am skeptical. They also claim to make the air smell fresh, like just after a thunderstorm. There might be some truth to that, but it's a "don't care" for me. I'm looking first and foremost to neutralize the cat-urine smell upstairs. As I said, this review is of the OION Technologies B-1000. I made the purchase based on other reviews that indicated that this unit ACTUALLY WORKS. Guess what? IT ACTUALLY WORKS! Primary observation: the bottom line is that the OION Technologies B-1000 unit effectively reduces the cat-urine smell to ZERO. The effect is noticeable inside of a couple of hours. The unit is located inside the guest bathroom, perched on top of the toilet tank. The cat-litter box is on the floor to one side of the toilet, in front of the sink. It's a small bathroom. The door stays open so the cats can come and go. Limitations: if I do not clean out the cat box for more than two days, the smell will again be noticeable. The air purifier can only do so much. But as long as I keep up with the cat box, it does very well. Truth be told, I *should* clean the box every day - the clumps of pee and poo in the box *have* to be making the toilet experience unpleasant for the kitties, and I don't wish that on them. So as long as I do my part often enough, the OION Technologies B-1000 does keep up quite well. Yes, I'm repeating the name of the product rather often. I'm trying to help with searches, and cut-n-paste is my friend. Don't let that put you off. Other observations: the power supply puts out 600 milliamps at 12 volts, so the unit can properly be called "low-power." That's 7.2 watts (figure 7.5, allowing a bit for conversion from 120VAC to 12VDC), so it's not going to break the bank from the power usage. The built-in fan is very quiet, even on the high setting. It's *NOT* going to circulate the air in room well enough to replace a fan or air-circulation blower. It's good for eliminating cat odor. For *my* purposes, that's enough. If you want a powerful blower or fan to circulate air in a room, this is NOT what you're looking for. The front-panel light can be turned on or off. When ON, it is a fairly bright blue light. Good night-light. I left mine ON for a week or so, but now I have it turned OFF. It's not annoying - it's in a bathroom down the hall...not going to keep us awake at night...I just don't need a night-light in that room. Cleaning the electrostatic element: press the button on the front of the unit, and the fan will stop and the top will hinge open. Fully open the top and the handle for the charged element is right there. The element slides straight up and out. It's about ten inches long, looks like an aluminum (aluminium?) charged element built into a plastic carrier. DO NOT IMMERSE IN WATER. Spray a bit of multipurpose cleaner on a paper towel (or similar) and wipe down the aluminum element. After days of run-time, you'll see a gray film on the element. When it comes off on your paper towel, it will be BLACK. That black stuff is the concentrated smelly particles that you didn't want to be smelling. Probably not a good idea to let it get on your skin. Anyway, wipe down the charged element, all four sides, make sure it's dry, and then slide it back down into the main unit. The charged element is "keyed" - the black plastic of the carrier has a tab built into it (at the bottom) so it can only go into the main unit one way. There are electrical contacts on the bottom of the charged element that have to be oriented correctly for the charging and ionization magic to work, so it needs to go back in correctly. When you have it oriented correctly, it will just slide right in. No effort. Close the top and when it clicks shut, the fan will come back on. Easy to use. Easy to clean. Effective for *my* purpose. If it doesn't fail for a few months, I'm happy. If it goes a year and then fails, I will be looking to replace it with a like unit. Probably buy several so I have enough replacements to last a long time. Hope this all helps you make your decision. Regards, -- Don Davis Update: bought the unit in May, 2019. Works as advertised & intended. Have been checking the metal filter weekly per the instructions & it has barely gotten any black stuff on it. So I guess that is a good thing. I love breathing in that crispy cool clean air smell in the air that happens when using ion devices, & this one does covers a good portion of my home. I like to move it to a couple other rooms in my home that this does not reach & then I do daily walks around in them to check the air & see how good its been cleaned by this & then I move it elsewhere when I’m satisfiedo. I’ve really been impressed with this thing, & so far, I think it is a great value for the money, & I hope that it lasts for many more years to come!
