  • Prediction: will join Carlson, Payne & Schmid as a classic
Predictions are fun, especially as I won't live long enough to see whether what I'm about to say will come true. This book will join John Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting, Edgar Payne's The Composition of Outdoor Painting, and Richard Schmid's Alla Prima as a must-have in every oil painter's library. There are several reasons: 1. Although you might miss them because they speed on by, every major precept for success is iterated and re-iterated: avoid boring shapes, work to make similar shapes dissimilar, bring color, sharpness and contrast to the center of interest (and dial them down elsewhere), drawing and composition are important but not as important as the abstract shapes -- Charles Hawthorne and Henry Hensche would call these 'spots of color' and Monet called it 'capturing light' -- and most importantly, design your painting. (If you want more about why designing is important, search the incredibly rich blog by Stapleton Kearns for "design." Everything Stape says informs the many statements on design by Goerschner; in a nutshell, good paintings are designed. Goerschner often repeats the need to simplify and alter the scene in front you to further the design. Stapleton puts it more succinctly: "Landscape painting is a lie, well told.") 2. The paint-on critiques contain hours of instruction. Hours. They repay long study. 3. The book contains a largely-failed plein air example, recording two false starts and one mostly-finished work -- it's signed, but it's not one of the best in the book. Each iteration demonstrates more and more effective simplification and design of abstract shapes. No other art instruction book I've seen discusses failure by the teacher, and Goerschner's analysis suggests helpful ways out of bad-day abysses. 4. As others have noted, the presentation -- pictures, prose, sidebars -- is uniformly clear, concise and right on target. Not your style? As an aside: it always surprises me to read one star and two star reviews of art books based on revulsion to the teacher's style. This is not a book on how to paint like Ted Goerschner. It's about how to paint. ... show more

  • Not for beginning landscape painters....
I would advise this book for intermediate to advanced outdoor painters as it is very sophisticated. It touches on subjects like values, composition, color, edges and I believe drawing but it is more for the lyrical/poetic painter. My mother is an artist who depends on painting verbatim from photos and cannot understand what he is talking about. I mean you should really have several hundred attempted outdoor paintings under your belt to really understand his philosophy. I really enjoyed the sections on paint overs of students work and to use photos as only a means to an end. I have learned from several experienced professionals what he means by changing the design/composition to make the painting work. Also, his colors are very poetic--not completely representational--which adds interest to any great painting. Goerschner is truly a master and therefore incorporates music into his art unlike most realist landscape painters. ... show more

  • Excellent lessons on principles of painting
Very informative with step by step process for developing a painting from beginning to end. Good for amateurs as well as skilled artists. • The Most Important Thing in a Painting
This book has become my go-to in learning how to paint landscapes. Goerschner starts with the focal point and paints out from there. His Paint-Over sections are insightful and make you feel like you are watching over the shoulder of a workshop teacher.

  • The Workshop Experience by Ted Goerschner
I enjoy instructional art books, but the way Ted uses colour and brush stokes to enhance a painting and the easy to understand composition schemes makes this book one of my favourites.I love looking through the book at the fresh colors and loose brush strokes of the painting examples. It would be an asset to any level artists library. ... show more

  • oil painting the workshop experience
This book came highly recommended by an artist that I admire. It did not let me down. I liked the information on mixing colors, composition, and the entire format. I have yet to follow the experience as detailed in the book but plan to. I like the style of painting, the loose style that I am striving for. As a person rather new to painting this is a must. • How Does He Make a Living ?
In the opening of the book, the artist mentions that he dropped out of art classes because of his instructors. I think he should have continued his art classes. I don't know if his paintings are meant to be just illustrative and are not real representations of what he does because I've seen his work before and it's not comparable to what is in this book. If I had to pay for his instructional teaching, then I would demand my money back. The only reason I haven't returned this book is that I misplaced the Amazon invoice and packing materials. In all honesty, I must say that my first oil painting I ever painted turned out better than anything this artist has in his book, and that was without any previous or prior knowledge, and I don't consider myself to be a great artist. Painting is like common sense - you either have it, or you don't. ... show more
