Great book to have for reference for what is important in a painting. Had the honor of being taught by Mr.Smuskiewicz while attending the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and it's good to hear him again about the key pieces of a painting.

The book is filled with demonstrations on how to approach and start oil paintings and has everything one needs to know to get started. There are step by step illustrations of the various ways to start, as in starting with line and mass or with tone as another one. He has projects to do also. It covers techniques, as in knife painting too, glazing, blending colors on the canvas among others. These are just a few things mentioned as the book covers everything... color balance, harmony, value, composition, etc., etc. ... show more

This is the second of two books purchased by Ted Smuskiewicz, and both are very good instructional books on art. Every page is filled with mostly color illustrations, with a few black and white. In fact the author is a favorite writer and teacher from whom I have gained a great deal.

I love the artists work in this book and the lessons are very helpful. The only down side to the book is that my book makes the artists works appear flat and dull. I hope that it was just my print. I would recommend the book nonetheless due to the wonderful exercises that helped me a great deal.
