Not really an alla prima focus, but if you're looking for detailed theoretical and practical guidance, this is the book to check out. It's helped me immensely, and I can't recommend it highly enough. It's been far, far better in terms of practical advice for me than any of the myriad oil painting books I own. I recommend it highly. This book is fairly old, but it is a solid source of well-described techniques. A self-motivated person can teach herself the rudiments of oil painting with this book alone.
