  • Comprehensive!
Format: Kindle
The author knocks it out of the park (again) with his book Off Grid Farm Animal Essentials. This book is very comprehensive(!!) and looks at the different types of livestock that can be used for off-grid living. This includes animals ranging from milk cows, goats (milk and utility), sheep, pigs, rabbits, and fowl (chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese). When I say comprehensive, the author goes into detail all of the factors that need to be considered when raising the specific type of animal you may be interested in for off-grid living. This includes: the book looks at the different breeds of each species, breeding and gestation periods, feeding/watering, land management/containment/sheltering, predator/predator control, just to name a few of the areas covered. The author then covers a cost/benefit analysis which is HUGELY beneficial as you can help determine what you might need for your given situation. Similar to his other book titled "Off Grid Home Building Essentials," the authors style lays out the information in an easy to read manner. The author also does not make any specific recommendations that you should choose "X" animal over "Y" animal. However, the information presented will allow you to make an informed decision based upon what you want or can do based upon your own situation. For example, I was looking at raising chickens and found information included in this book that I had not considered. I highly recommend this book! ... show more

  • Great Intro to Farm Animal Care, But Lacks Off-Grid Insights
Format: Paperback
This book is a great introduction to the basics of farm animal care! I especially enjoyed the section on different chicken breeds and egg sizes. This will definitely give me some ideas for what breeds I would like to do in the future. This book had a lot of facts and numbers. I was hoping for more information on raising animals without electricity—for example, how to keep chickens and collect eggs without a heat lamp. I also found it surprising that the book recommends refrigerating eggs, as unwashed eggs can safely be left out. I thought this book would explain more of how to care for animals in an off grid emergency. ... show more

  • Off Grid / Self Sustaining / Self Sufficient? maybe.. but it is the perfect starter pack.
Format: Kindle
Off-grid can mean different things to different people. Personally, I understand it to be completely independant of social infrastructure... roads, utilities, energy... all of it... However, it does not mean I don't use these things to prepare myself to live this way. This book delves into the highlights of starting a self-sustaining lifestyle but doesn't completely detach from social infrastructure.. things like using vets, medicine, feed grains, and grasses as a recurring fees, as well as selling goods, are part of this book's subject matter... so I may have changed the title just a little based on how I define it. What does the book do very well? It describes the options, considerations, costs, and benefits of starting a self-sustaining lifestyle that includes livestock. It's the second book I've read from the author, and like the first it is well organized in it's layout... which means I can jump around and find just the information I want. personally, i learned less on cattle farming because I have the experience... but going to the rabbit and turkey sections allowed me to see some great information. enougth that it got my curisoty going and I wound up reading the entire book. My take: it's a good starting point. It provides the spring board to making some choices and just enough information to help you understand what to deep dive on. perfect starter pack. ... show more

  • Your Ultimate Guide to Self-Sufficiency
Format: Kindle
"Off Grid Farm Animal Essentials" is seriously comprehensive, covering everything from chickens to goats, pigs, and rabbits. If you're into off-grid living and want to raise your own animals, this book is gold. It breaks everything down into manageable steps, which is great for beginners like me, but even experienced farmers will find it super helpful. What I love most is how practical John Utterback is. It's not just theory; it's real-world advice that helps you make smart decisions about your farm. Plus, John includes pictures, comparison tables, and even cost breakdowns, so you know exactly what you're getting into financially. And he doesn't just focus on the money – there's a ton of info on pasture management and ecological stuff too. Even though it's packed with info, it's not hard to understand. The writing's clear, and he really breaks things down so anyone can get it. Overall, if you're thinking about raising animals off the grid, this book is a game-changer. Trust me, it's worth every penny. ... show more
