Description

A New York Times BestsellerExplainer-in-Chief David Macaulay updates the worldwide bestseller The Way Things Work to capture the latest developments in the technology that most impacts our lives. Famously packed with information on the inner workings of everything from windmills to Wi-Fi, this extraordinary and humorous book both guides readers through the fundamental principles of machines, and shows how the developments of the past are building the world of tomorrow. This sweepingly revised edition embraces all of the latest developments, from touchscreens to 3D printer. Each scientific principle is brilliantly explained--with the help of a charming, if rather slow-witted, woolly mammoth. An illustrated survey of significant inventions closes the book, along with a glossary of technical terms, and an index. What possible link could there be between zippers and plows, dentist drills and windmills? Parking meters and meat grinders, jumbo jets and jackhammers, remote control and rockets, electric guitars and egg beaters? Macaulay explains them all. Read more

  • Gifts for a 9 year old and an 11 year old
This book was a birthday gift for my 9 year old neighbor and my 11 year old grandson. The report I got back from the 9 year old's mother was he didn't want to put it down and continued to read much of it. I heard good things also from my daughter about my grandson and his interest in it.

  • Great book
Interesting book for a smart 9 year old. Being read with Dad, in case some things are a little more difficult.

  • Always a great read!
I've had several copies of this book over the years and now I get to introduce it to a new generation with my great nephews, who love the book.

  • Science classes NEED this book!
This book should be required for elementary science classes. Starting with the simplest devices, it explains the physics behind how tools work and why we use them. Just knowing these basics in such a clear way, would be the best help, when a student is in hs physics class.

  • Way things work book
This is a great book for kids who are science and math oriented. I bought the original for my son who is now 40 yrs. When he was a young boy and he still has it. I ordered it for a grandson who loves math etc. It is nice that it was updated and includes items that did not exist when my son got his.

  • So Helpful for Mechanically Minded Children
I am a clinical child therapist who works in a school setting. I work with a lot of children who have learning differences specifically on the autism spectrum. In our area we recently returned to in person classes and the challenges of wearing masks, distancing, and the sudden change of routine has caused a lot of stress for all students and especially the cohort that I work with. I bought this book for those students to use to take a brain break with during class time when they have felt overwhelmed. I loved this book as a kid and I know children who have a more rigid way of looking at the world can find comfort in looking at and immersing themselves in orderly types of thought. This book has provided a refuge of order in the midst of the chaos of the classroom (especially this year). The children I work with are often overwhelmed in normal classroom setting and this book provides a little island or rest for them before returning to their class to keep doing the work of learning. If you have mechanically minded or even a more rigid thinking child in your life this is a wonderful gift to them and provides a great way to take a short break from the chaos of the day. I highly recommend it. ... show more
