I was given a new 2003 GT Palomar in 2004. It never fit right and I could never get it to shift right, so it went into a shed and was forgotten until 2013 when I dragged it out, took a ride and was hit by a car on the rear wheel. After releasing the V-brakes and removing the pads, I limped the bike back home and it went back in the shed. In 2021, I pulled it out and was going to junk it. Even though it probably had seen less than 100 miles of riding, a 20 year old $200 bike wasn't worth taking to a bike shop for a truing and tune up and I doubted I'd get anything for it on CL. For the heck of it, I watched some video's on wheel straightening and fixed the bent rear wheel. I then learned about index shifting and got the shifting straightened out. From there I completely tore the bike down, cleaned it, greased it and tuned it. I figured that way I'd get top dollar if I could find a buyer. Well, the bike wound up riding better than anything I'd owned before, but it still didn't fit right. I also doubted that anyone would pay what I felt the bike was worth now. A new bike with comparable components was going to be easily $600 or more and I'd have to play with it to make it fit right. So I decided to try to make the GT fit. I replaced the seat post with an Orign8 400mm and the bars with Bucklos risers to make the bike fit better. It fit better, but still wasn't right. So, I thought new grips would feel better and might help with the fit and handling issues. Based on some research and reviews, I decided to try the ODI grips. Especially as several reviews mentioned that they were comfortable and fit larger hands. Even though they were longer than the 100mm stock grips on the GT, I ordered them in. Hindsight being 20/20, I ordered these grips, before trying to simulate how a 130mm grip would feel on my bars with the grip shifters. When I simulated a narrower hand position on the bars during a ride, I found that a the bike feel worse. But, when I tried a wider hand placement on the bars, the bike rode better. So I figured when the ODI grips arrived I'd return them and began searching for grips that seemed as plush as the ODI, but narrower than the stock 100mm grips I had. Unfortunately, I didn't find anything I wanted to try. When the ODI grips arrived and I put my hands around them, they felt great. They are very comfortable. Firm, but have give when squeezed and are not slick on a bare hand. They are also larger, outer diameter, than my stock grips. But, they were too long for what I wanted. After looking at how the grips are constructed and how the locking rings work, I decided to try to modify them to meet my needs. I took a measurement, a deep breath and felt stupid taking a hacksaw to these brand new grips. A utility knife and file were also used to complete the job. In the end, the modification worked perfectly and the grips are maybe 80mm now. They solidly lock on to the bars, feel great and work perfectly with my Revoshift shifters. I've done about 100 miles so far, bare hands and with light gloves, both on pavement and light trails. All has been good and comfortable. No regrets on this purchase.
