  • Really nice though hard to get going, maybe not for little kids
Color: Black/Green
Well, I am 48 and I actually bought this for myself, hahaha. No, seriously, I used to like playing the flute when I was younger but at my age the sound of the flute has become high pitched and annoying. I happenned to come upon this gadget when searching for a student clarinet for my 14 yr. old son and thought it might be nice for me to try just for fun. So, of course, for the first hour I thought something was wrong with it and could not get one sound out of it. I futzed with it and finally thought maybe it had to do with the positioning of the reed. Presto! This tip will help every other buyer from now on. So, the reed that came already in place was down a bit, not flush with the mouthpiece. As soon as I raised it and it became the same height - flush with the tip of the mouth piece, it made its first sound. As you turn the device to its side, make sure the reed (the little plastic looking doober) is flush with the mouth piece but you should be able to see an opening as it were, a crack sort of between the top of the reed and the mouthpiece. That's how I realized my breath needs to go into that little opening - the crack. Second tip: Your mouth should not circle the mouth piece in the shape of an O but rather as though someone was pulling your cheeks by the mouth out to the sides and and a bit downward, yet your mouth must be closed firmly around the mouthpiece so air does not escape. Also, sometimes you need to move it a bit upward or downward as your playing to get better sounds. When I take a deep breath and then blow, the sounds come out much nicer - another tip. Bottome line, I don't know if you have to work so hard with a real clarinet, I guess we'll find out when our new Mendini arrives (of course I will just have to 'borrow' it from my son to test the waters, you know), but if a clarinet is not as hard to blow then I would recommend this either for teenagers with patience or adults to have fun. As for the sound - quite nice actually, I would recommend everyone buying this. Update: As far as the quality of the device I give this 5 stars because it sounds very nice and we all love it here. The reason I give it 4 stars is because of the "after purchase service" of the Nuvo company. After answering only one letter, they simply ignore my other inquiries which is a shame for such a cute innovation. ... show more

  • Musian (self taught) of 20 years, reviews:
Color: White/Blue
This little turd is such an enjoyable toy to keep around. I've played.... basic rock band instruments for 20 years and .... as a creative type, got bored and wanted to expand. I started with the JSax, actually. I've been interested in brass and woodwinds on Ebay and at flea markets but always hated the prices and these D00ds..... made a seriously affordable beginner instrument. I see absolutely no reason why anyone should ever doubt getting this as a beginner/practice instrument. I used to wear Jenco jeans, staring at guitar magazines, having a $5 allowance, waiting for a day to buy at least a $100 guitar, this Dood.... is revolutionary, to me. It is technology making instruments affordable to anyone. Is it expert quality? HELL NO, that artisan stuff is done with metal and cellulose to a level of detail that I don't even know about.... Beginner? Hell Yeah! Super easy to play and learn Really fun to fart around with Ability to record for a song??? .......................... not exactly.... timbre is .... PLEASANT for the parents while the child, or spouse practices. It isn't harsh or too loud. This, according to me, a 20 year musician of guitars and drums, not brass, not woodwinds..... It is fantastic. Super easy available embouchure, and from my experience from this company, they send a few different ... impressive reeds. Look, I like to play with new instruments... I intend on all of my new toys being from this company because of the quality, ease of play and learning.... and I really think this company would be great for schools. ... show more

  • Fun toy, but probably too frustrating for a beginner.
Color: Black/Blue
The good news is that I was able to get some sounds right away and it does what I wanted in terms of learning proper mouth position on the reed/mouthpiece. However it's range is very limited and even though the rubber hole covers have holes in some to allow for a flat or sharp note, it is extremely hard to get those notes as the rubber is very grippy on the fingers so you end up inadvertently breaking the seal over the main hole as the rubber wants to stick to your finger as you slide your finger. I bought this hoping to play more Middle Eastern styles of music on recording I do in my home studio. I prefer real instruments over keyboard synth versions. While I can play a little bit of that style, the difficult in slurring notes from one note to the next, makes it very hard. It's possible, but hard. I would preferred to just have open holes with out the rubber covers. Better if they had used hard plastic hole covers with rubber seals. The other issue is that the top hole (closest to the mouthpiece) sounds WAY off key. It works on certain scales, but as someone who plays the recorder (which this is supposed to be based off of), it's very frustrating. So is it worth the money? I'd say yes as it teach you basic technique skills such as proper mouth embouchure. You also can play a few simple tunes. But really it is more of a toy. I quickly outgrew it and realized that I needed to buy a much more expensive professional Armenian Duduk wind instrument to do what I want to do. But at least I'm developing my mouth muscles and the synthetic reeds and mouthpiece it comes with are actually quite good. The whole thing is also very sturdy. So yeah, it's not great, but it's not terrible either. Buy one, learn a few things, and it'll be a good step towards figuring out what woodwind instrument to move up to. ... show more
