  • Immediate comfort
Size: 8.5 Wide Color: Army/Green/Black/Orange
Out of the box the Nortiv 8 hiking boots fit better than I had hoped. Over the years I’ve worn out many different brands of hiking boots, some, of course, better than others. And more expensive. My latest light hikers, Mont Belle ,would still be in use now except that after so many years of hard abuse they kinda fell apart and I didn’t feel right filing a warranty claim. So I shopped around looking for something comfortable, durable, and that wouldn’t leave me barefoot in the national park. Found the Nortiv 8 with “wide” option, read the reviews and took a chance. Gotta admit, the price was attractive too. When I received the boots USPS, I inspected their construction, scrutinized them from heel to toe. There is lots of stitching where many competitors are just gluing. It is usually only on boots costing twice as much that you start to see this kind of construction. Many of my previous hikers fell apart as a result of sole adhesives letting go. It’s so annoying. My personal feeling is that I get longer wear from stitched uppers as opposed to reliance on glue alone, which always seems to be where boots fail. And there are limits to what a shoe glue repair can do. As for the Active 8 boots in the field, they were immediately comfortable, required no break-in period, and felt like old friends back on a familiar trail together. I had no rubs, no blisters, and no irritations whatsoever. There is room for an insert, but that doesn’t seem necessary. I fully expected these boots to “ fail” their inaugural hike and need to be returned. In that regard I was surprised and wrong. They were great. As an observation, they don’t seem to breathe well, but it’s a small consideration that can be easily overcome by slightly loosening up lacing while hiking. I’m not complaining. I mourn the demise of my Mont Belles, but in the Active 8s I have found what I believe to be well made and comparable boots at suitable retiree pricing. Only time will tell if these boots will be durable and live up to their predecessor. But I think I’ll likely wear out before these boots do. If you’re searching for quality without compromise, at an affordable price, the Active 8 boots might be where your search ends. Take these out on your next walkabout. You’ll see. ... show more

  • Get these!
Size: 12 Color: Taupe-suede
Off brand maybe, but these hikers are well made, waterproof, have a very comfortable footbed, aggressive tough sole, feel snug on your feet and ankles when laced up, and weigh almost nothing compared to the big brands. Plus they are less than half price! You can buy 3 pair of these, or one pair of the "other brand". And they look good! A no brainer. ... show more

  • Nice boots so far for the price
Size: 12 Wide Color: Olive-suede
I've only worn them a few times, but I can say they are comfortable even before proper break-in and appear to be well made. The shank is not so stiff that they're uncomfortable during day-to-day wear, but you can definitely feel the support. If you plan on wearing these with thicker socks do yourself a favor and buy at least a half size up - I normally wear 12w so that's what I initially ordered but had to send the first pair back as they were tight even with normal socks. I'm rocking a 13w now (no 12.5 available), feels great with wool socks and a little loose with normal thickness cotton. With some nice insole inserts they'd be perfect. Haven't tested their water resistance yet, but dry feet trampling around in wet grass for two hours the other night gives me some confidence. If these hold up well after a few months I'll happily buy another pair in black. ... show more

  • 250+ Miles of Lava Rocks Later & Holding Up
Size: 9.5 Wide Color: All Black
I bought these boots specifically for hiking Haleakala Crater. Temperature at the summit and crater dropped to 35°F, it was indeed comfortable. The durability of the treads are holding up despite the roughness of the terrain. Unfortunately, the shoelaces are what broke first, that’s an easy fix, always have a back up when on a trip. Grip and traction are very important to me, and they’ve handled the marshlands quite well. They’ve gotten wet and muddied a lot yet still no leakage, that’s a huge plus. Ankle roll is nonexistent. The inner sole is removable so you can insert your own for better arch support which I did. Sizing is spot on, not too tight, just right, may actually try sizing up from a 9.5 to 10 to give some more room, but 9.5 is definitely comfortable already. I have recommended these shoes to friends and family when they go hiking. ... show more

  • Very Impressed!
Size: 9.5 Color: Brown/Black/Tan
Compared to the hikers these replaced that were leather and cost 3x as much, I am very impressed with these. They are not leather but they seem well made. Stitched not just glued. Nice rubber toe guard. Great ankle support! Waterproof - I have walked through wet fields and no issues. More room in the toe box than my old ones. I do not have a wide foot but these allow a heavier sock when needed. The extra room adds an air barrier so they are warmer on cooler mornings. In addition the padding seems to have a little insulation quality as well. I usually put in my own inserts because I suffer with plantar fasciitis but these seem to provide good support and cushion. They have a good tread that has a little give which also lends to improved comfort. Not sure if that means they will wear out faster but if so, for the improved comfort factor and cost of these hikers, it is worth it. ... show more
