  • Could be indispensable
If you've ever tried to change a front tire on a lawnmower, by hand, you know what I'm talking about. Just don't like the way it mounts in a vice.

  • works great on new tires..
didn't go too well trying to change 3 wheeler tires that haven't been changed for over 30 years haha maybe that was my problem. broke it ! but I imagine new tires would be too bad

  • but was nicely surprised after having used it now
I don't usually do a review of things that I purchase. There was a little uncertainty about getting this unit, but was nicely surprised after having used it now. Some observations: 1. I have about 2 dozen smaller (12” rims or less) wheels in various states of repair, on trailers, turf care eq., and in the attic, that are now in the process of being updated. In the past I was bull headed enough not to want to spend money on fixing if it meant taking it in for mounting, at from $10 to $20 each time. The alternative was doing it myself, and having to wrestle with the things like a monkey, then possibly not being able to finish what I started. 2. Those days are over. This is a good little unit. Along with a couple of cheap tire irons, it does what it was intended. It is not, however, a massive, powered, tire center. It is – an inexpensive device to hold a rim firm, and provide a place to get some leverage. It also comes with a bead breaker that is adjustable, sturdy and functional. 3. If you have a bench vise, skip the base and tighten the unit in the vise. The bench I have is sturdy, but not solid, 2x4s and HDF. 4" small bench vise. It all worked fine. 4. Cinch the rim down, and sit back and eye up the situation. Tires are made to go on rims, rims designed to except tires. There is no need to work up a sweat, or fight it like it’s trying to kill you. Make no mistake, it is a bit of work. But if you end up cussing it, stop and look it over again, get the situation in order. 5. Use a vise grips and pinch it on the rim to hold the bead from rotating around as you’re working . 6. If the whole thing starts to bind, sit back and eye up the situation again. No need to bend the center rod (5/8 threaded rod), and no need to bend the changing lever. Those parts fine, but not over built. Put some lube on (windshield washer fluid works good), get the bead into the recess of the rim (jorgensen clamps work, so do utility straps, use the tire irons to get it down in there, clamps to hold it). Pull the changing lever around a little until there is some resistance (1/2 inch maybe, couple inches maybe, maybe more, don't stress it), repeat, repeat, ---. It probably won’t happen in one go - your not a powered tire changing unit no matter how many brews you’ve had. I didn’t cut a groove in the changing lever to help hold it to the rim. That may help, I haven’t needed to, yet. 7. 10-15minutes done. No sweat. Money ahead. Paid for itself in the first hour. Much easier than I thought. ... show more

  • Frustrating tire changer but it works and center rod BROKE
I used this machine to take off 20 x 8 x 8 2 ply tires from their rims. The big issue was putting the 20 x 10 x 8 FOUR ply tires on . Taking the tires off the rims was easy. Putting the new ones on was a whole different story. . The bottom beads of the 4 ply tires was easy. The problem was getting the top bead on the rim. I bent the threaded rod and several times I bent the bead seater tool with the ball on the end of it. My first attempt to put a 4 ply on failed after about 90 minutes effort. Second attempt another hour failure. Third time was a charm using my forearm to hold the tire down and pulling like my life depended on it to get the top bead on the rim...lol...successful! That was the first tire. The second time taking the 2 ply off and putting 4 ply on took about 20 minutes. The device is flimsy but I don't know if it was designed to mount 4 ply tires. it seem to work great at taking the 2 plys off. I don't like the machine but I guarantee I'll use it again instead of throwing it away. I didn't injure any body parts during this fight with the tires ! Update....I have only used this to put one pair of tires on and take a pair off. Now I needed it again to take those off and another pair on. Center rod bent a couple times, i straightened it somewhat and then the rod broke at the same exact time that I got the last tire completely on the rim. I had to drill out the rod from the bottom. Now I am attempting to find a 9/16 threaded rod to replace the center rod that was there. I have to get a rod that will screw into the top red piece. If not...all of it is trash ... show more

  • This is a real time saver.
Item was suppose to be Northern tool brand, but central machinery was delivered, but looks to be same. This is a real time saver and easier to use than I expected. I used it to change some tires on my riding mowers and it works great, wish I had it long time ago. I noticed that 4" rims are a little harder to change tire on than the 6" and 8" rims, but still much easier than screw drivers and vise grips. If I could change anything about it, I would have put a thicker rubber protector ring, and a groove in the mounting bar would help to hold it on the rim, but as long as you keep plenty of lubricant on the bead of the tire and hold the tire itself when mounting or demounting, this tool works good. So far I've used it to remove 6 tires, and mount 4 tires and its worked great. Seems to be made of good materials, a little shaky, but still very useable. Good tool at a good price! ... show more

  • Makes the job possible, not easy
With 22 acres of thorn trees, I've struggled with many a flat tire. "Slime" is an acceptable temporary fix, but eventually the tires must be replaced. After struggling for years with vices/pry bars, I guess I was hoping for more with the mini tire changer. Its great for breaking the bead and removal of the old tire, but other than providing a stable platform, isn't much help in mounting new tires; be prepared to resort to multiple pry bars and a lot of effort (I found that the "bead breaker" attachment is good at initially securing the bead below the rim while mounting). Also, anything more substantial than a wheel barrow tire isn't going to seal when attempting to pressurize, even with a ratchet strap (DO NOT ignite ether in a small tire to seal). Save yourself the frustration and use a Slime inner tube (one inch smaller than the rim size diameter reduces the possibility of "pinch" damage during the mounting process). ... show more
