  • Niphean Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board
Lens Color: Teak Zephyr
This inflatable SUP by Niphean is feature-loaded and will tick off boxes for those who are looking for all the bells and whistles. This hits all the targets! First, it is longer and wider than most other iSUPS at 11’ x 32” x 6”. That extra length and width translates into a more stable platform, with a large, padded deck, inspiring confidence in newbies. If you are new to the sport, just know that this board will support you and a friend “over 350 pounds total capacity”. That’s a lot! The graphics package on both sides of this board is several notches above what you “normally” see offered on Amazon. This is a very attractive, even outstanding looking board. Sweet! Beyond the larger size of this SUP, which provides added buoyancy, are many features which will make the hours spent aboard easier, safer and more enjoyable. I like the extra cargo storage in the stern. That’s nautical-speak for the back of the SUP. So, you can split the weight more front-to-back for a better balanced ride and easier access. This is a rarely seen, but useful upgrade that will be used often. Also, I noticed that the elasticized bungees were held in place by stainless steel D-rings, instead of a cheaper vinyl “cleat”. That’s nice to see too. It’s too bad that they didn’t make the tension adjustable like on some SUPs. Those extra D-rings sprinkled all over the deck are useful for lots of purposes. For newbies, the most important use will be for a place to attach your ankle leash. I like to link to the side, as it’s more comfortable than the center handle. When sitting, I don’t like to be sitting on the coiled leash, but I also don’t like to have it drag in the water. You could also attach a kayak seat to provide some back support. I have a double-bladed kayak paddle for when the water is choppy that converts to a single-blade for calm water and standing. The handle or the extra blade are stored in the cargo area. I also have some small Velcro paddle holders so my paddle handle doesn’t fall off and drift away. I put an inflatable neck pillow in the stern area. When I’m ready to lay down, it’s there, waiting for me. Ahhhhh! Sometimes my wife and I tie our SUPs side-by-side with the Velcro paddle holders. They come in a set of 4, so two for each SUP. When the water is rough or I need a break, I’ll take the dock line with carabiners already rigged and tie up to a buoy, eat some snacks from the dry bag, get a drink, chill with some tunes and lay down and just watch the clouds drift by. When my wife gets tired, I use the same dock line to tow her around the lake. I do wish this had a bow D-ring. Not a deal-breaker, but it’d be nice to have. I can get by with the one in the stern. I may have to get a GoPro camera to record the experiences. I’ve been on a lot of lakes in multiple states and the ocean, so it’d be nice to save some of the memories while paddling in special places. Having a mount is a real upgrade. This was used for the first time yesterday. I brought it, along with several other SUPs to a church gathering at the lake and let everyone have fun paddling around. For many, it was their first time and they all came back with big smiles! I think this is a good value for what you get. TBH, I’m used to one fin, sometimes three, but four?! Wow! That’s kind of a shocker. The fin mid-ship probably adds the most to keeping the tracking straight, aside from the stern Main Fin, although I have not used it long enough to tell just how much that helps. So, having 4 fins vs. 1 fin could be a plus or… a minus, with more to keep track of, installation, removal, etc. That said, you could just install the one Main Fin in back, see if you like it and leave the others in the bag. No one will know, haha! That would be a good way to compare the performance too. The double-action pump with gauge is nice to have, as it’s fast or as a backup. Each stroke, down or up, pumps air. Nice! Pressure will NOT register on the gauge until you have 7-8lbs psi. Then, you will start to see the needle move. Keep going to at least 12-14 psi, but not more than 15psi. I use either 12v air pumps or lithium rechargeable pumps, although for my first year, I only used a single-action plunger-type pump and filled about a dozen times to 15psi in the hot weather. What a workout! I’ll be 65 soon and I thought that would be the end of me, haha! Get the electric pump. You are welcome! Pro Tip #1: Never set the board fin-side-down on land. Fins can break. Ask me how I know. Pro Tip #2: When the board is out of the water, always keep it in shade. The hot sun will expand the internal air, increasing the pressure and can cause a rupture. Or, you could just press the valve one second to let off some pressure. Pro Tip #3 Before filling, ALWAYS release the spring-loaded valve button to the UP position. THEN put the hose with valve fitting on and start-a-pumpin’. Newbies can sometimes forget and lose 10lbs when removing the hose. Yikes! Niphean offers a One Year Warranty on their SUPs, so weigh that in when considering which way to go. This comes with the usual items like valve adjusting tool to tighten the valve if it ever leaks a bit. Some extra vinyl rectangles to make patches. A floating, adjustable, single-blade paddle, a plunger-type air pump with hose, valve fitting with silicone gasket and gauge, a coiled ankle leash, a waterproof Hi-Vis orange container for storing keys, emergency whistle, valve tool and vinyl patches and a zippered carry bag with shoulder straps. Some extra “bonus” upgrades they threw in to sweeten the deal are a waterproof phone case and a deck mounted cupholder, and two in-deck mounts, for a GoPro or the included cupholder or fishing rod holders. Yowza! Gimme summa dat! Recommended! ... show more

  • Great starter kit
Lens Color: Breezy Washwood
Full disclosure - this is my first paddle board. I ordered this product having no idea what to expect. When the package arrived I was surprised at how heavy it was. After getting the package opened, the weight all comes from the paddle board itself; it is constructed of some heavy-duty pvc / vinyl-coated fabric. The package included the paddle board, a pump, an air hose, a paddle, four fins, a few miscellaneous items, and a backpack to store everything in. The first thing I did was unroll the paddle board, hook the hose up, and begin inflating it. This is where I found my biggest problem with this product; the hose does not want to stay connected to the paddle board. I don't think this is a problem with the valve on the paddle board; rather, I think it's a problem with a cheap hose. Nevertheless, I was able to get the board inflated and I found it to be very solid. The next thing I did was assemble the paddle. At 6'-8", I'm a very tall person, so imagine my surprise when I found the paddle to be long enough to use! If I end up liking paddle boarding as an activity, I will probably look for a different paddle, but for now, I'm pleased to report that this paddle was made for people of all heights. I have not had an opportunity to get this board on the water yet, but I'm certain it will support me. The manufacturer says it will hold 350 lbs, and I weigh quite a bit less than that. Knowing I wouldn't be getting on the water soon, I deflated the paddle board (tip: install just the hose so that the valve stays open), rolled it up, and I was easily able to package it, the pump, the paddle, and all of the odds and ends into the included backpack. I wish the backpack were a little bit more robust; the fabric feels thin and when it rips, it will be catastrophic. Perhaps I can find a different bag to use when this inevitably happens. Overall I'm happy with this board. The kit came with everything a person might need to get started (excluding a personal flotation device). The board itself seems pretty solid, though some of the accessories are a bit cheap. For someone like me who may just be getting started in this particular activity as a hobby, though, this kit is just about perfect. ... show more
