  • Great Casual Pet Sim
If you know what you're getting then this is the perfect game for a person or child unable or unwilling to get a physical pet for some reason. If you've played the first game on the DS, it's very much the same, but prettier to look at and with some changes. The breeds that come with the Golden Retriever version as default are Beagle, Maltese, Great Dane, Pug, Cocker Spaniel, Shiba Inu, Miniature Daschund, Miniature Pinscher, and of course the title breed: Golden Retriever. In Japan this version is the Shiba Inu version, and the title breed was swapped from shiba to the retriever in localization, though they're the same games. You start your game by picking a puppy out of the select breeds and a vast amount of pelt/color choices compared to the first game. In the first game, you only had three colors of each breed, while in Nintendogs+Cats, there's a load of colors to pick from for each breed. Once you pick your puppy it's brought home and follow the tutorial phase to name it and teach it how to sit. After that you're free to do whatever you want with your pooch. You can access cats too, but you'll have to save money in order to buy one. There's a fair amount of patience and dedication to training and caring for your puppy in this game. It can take a while for your puppy to bring a frisbee back, for example, and depending on how much you walk, feed, and play with your puppy can affect and influence their weight. It's really aimed to be a laid back sim compared to the first installment and takes time, so if you're planning on advancing through the ranks and racking up all those trainer points like the DS Nintendogs, you're extremely out of lucky here and will have to wait a number of days to get enough points or have a trained enough pooch to be successful enough to get in high competition ranks. For a casual player it's a cute little game that can work as a good pet substitute and a really nice cooldown for just about everyone. It's not something that has to be checked all the time nor is it something can get by with being checked only once daily to keep things smooth (like Animal Crossing). The puppies and kittens are virtual, and they depend on you, and to keep them happy checking on them at least twice a day and playing with them for at least a few hours is the best way to keep them happy, clean, and healthy. The only complaints I'd have for these games is that some of the breeds look a bit inaccurate, training your pup to fetch a frisbee takes far too long (seeing as it's a game), and that the times that other dog owners are at the various parks are potentially annoying (ex: they're almost always there during the day so if you want an empty park, you'd have to go later, which can be bothersome). Otherwise, these are great casual games that simulate having a pet fairly well. Any main future wishes that I'd have is that the puppies could potentially grow into adult dogs to open gates for other things. ... show more

  • Beautiful Game!
When I first started this game up, I was truly shocked and amazed! The 3D effects in this game are amazing, they blew me away! The graphics are clean and clear and so beautiful, the the puppies and kittens really do pop out and seem so real. Every little hair on their bodies stand out. Much better then the older Nintendogs games. It's so cute taking my Shiba Inu pup for a walk and watching him roll around in the grass or chasing birds. It's just a beautiful game to look at. I love that, instend of having 3 different colors, they have (using the shiba for ex.) 3 different black and tans, 3 different reds, and a tanish cream, all with different markings, some pups are even smaller then the others. The only downside is you can only keep 3 pets at home and 3 at the hotel (less then the older Nintendogs games). But other then that, it's a beautiful game with amazing 3D effects, super cute, and very fun. ... show more

  • Amazing graphics! It's also addictively fun!
How realistic this absolutely adorable game looks is astounding! I was so amazed by the graphics of this game, it is the most realistic 3DS game i have tried so far. The 3D really works well on this game, the depth is breathtaking. I love the way that the game plays, the fact that you speak to your dog and pet it and care for it makes it seem like you really have a puppy. There are so many fun things to do like training your puppy, and entering competitions, going shopping, taking walks, and earning money for new dogs, and several other things. Besides the fact that I love the game, I got a really great deal on it, I paid $14 for it as a Lightning deal on Black Friday, and as you can see the retail price is $40. Anyway, I definitely recommend this game, at even retail price! :) ... show more

  • Truly amazing
I decided to get this as my first game for the 3DS and it does not disappoint! I can't believe how clear the graphics are and how the puppies and cats pop out at you. I started with a pug because I have one in real life, and I am dazzled by the similarities of this virtual pug to my real pug. Nintendo did a wonderful job on the mannerisms and poses of the dogs. I can't wait to unlock more breeds and find more presents while I take my Nintendog for a walk. Highly recommend this game, you will not be let down. ... show more
