  • A great Digital Notebook and a Kindle too!!
Option: Jade Digital Storage Capacity: 64 GB Color: Metallic Jade
I have been a Kindle fanatic for years. I have a Paperwhite, Oasis and now this Kindle Scribe. I am one of those busy people who leaves notes and lists all over the desk. I purchased this to control the paper lists in my life; in other words, as a digital notebook. The first day I transferred all of my notes/lists in there and almost wore through a whole pen tip. I literally just picked it up and started writing, the instructions are pretty intuitive. The fact that it is a Kindle too, made it even better for me. I am trying to stick to just putting cookbooks and non-fiction on there so I can mark up and bookmark items of interest, but it will be hard. I'm left-handed so I love that it, like my Oasis, flips the screen when you change hands, and you can move the notebook menu to the right too. Wish I knew how to draw, as playing with the pencil mode, I noticed you can shade with it and everything. Amazing! The quality and build of this Kindle Scribe is great, and its so thin. I haven't received the cover yet, so I hope it is not too much thicker with the cover on; but since it is magnetic, I plan to take it out of the cover if I'm holding it for long periods of time. Definitely, worth the price for me as I purchased during the Spring Sale event with a trade-in, so it was a great deal. ... show more

  • A useful device, but needs some more work.
Option: Black Digital Storage Capacity: 64 GB Color: Tungsten
Update: I spent a lot of time with my new Kindle Scribe last night, and I am liking it better, so I am upgrading to four stars. It does take some getting used to. The issues I noted in my initial review still hold, but the note-taking and annotation functions in books and documents are helpful. It would be nice if there were a cleaner way of transferring these things to a computer. This is my initial review. I've just spent the past four hours learning this new Kindle Scribe. I've been using Kindles since 2010, so I'm familiar with much of the functionality. As an e-reader, it's as good as its predecessors, but I bought it because I wanted the note-taking functionality. Unfortunately, my expectations were greater than the capability of this device. Firstly, it is good for taking notes in the notebook mode. You can handwrite the notes and convert them to more readable text. That is nice. Amazon advertises that you can take notes on other documents, books, and so forth, and this is true, however, this function has a very awkward interface with the notebook function. You cannot convert the notes you take in a document or book into text. You can email the notes to yourself, but they go without the book or document text to which they refer. So what you get is your scribbled notes, scattered across a blank page. I have searched high and low in Amazon's documentation on this Scribe to see if I've somehow gotten it wrong, but it doesn't appear that I have. It appears that the engineers who designed this device didn't have a good idea of the needs of non-technical customers like me. It may be great for someone more tech-savvy than I. I'll likely use it for its note-taking and sending capabilities. For the price, I expected better. ... show more

  • I love my new Kindle Scribe!
Option: Black Digital Storage Capacity: 64 GB Color: Tungsten
I purchased a Boox Note Air 3 and a Rata Supernote. So I can compare those two devices to the Scribe competently. The Boox is pretty complicated and does a lot of stuff (some of which I still haven't tried). The Rata Supernote isn't as complicated and works well as a note taker. But, the reason I love my new Scribe is that it is as good as the Boox and Rata at taking notes and handwriting. But the Scribe can mark up documents and the Boox and Rata cannot. The Boox does an OK job of running the Kindle app. The Rata isn't so good as a Kindle reader. the Scribe is a Kindle and it functions really well as a Kindle. So, essentially, I get a great Kindle AND a great note taker. I think the Scribe is superior both as a Kindle reader and as a note taking device. ... show more

  • First Impressions
Option: Black Digital Storage Capacity: 32 GB Color: Tungsten
The Scribe arrived mid afternoon today, so I’ve spent the past five or six hours getting to know it. This is the first full sized e-reader that I’ve owned and I’m very impressed. I purchased the bundle that includes the plant based cover, the faster charger and the replacement pen set. The cover won’t arrive for another two days and I expect that I’ll be updating this once I receive it. Right now I’m only giving the Scribe 4 stars because of the Premium Pen. While it does magnetically attached to the Scribe, that magnet isn’t very strong and I’ve had the pen jump off twice in just a few hours of use, necessitating tracking in down around the house. I’m hoping the cover will change that. Reading on the Scribe feels very natural. It’s very light weight and the standard font size works well. Holding it one handed is much more comfortable than a hardcover book. I’m hoping the cover won’t affect that but we’ll see. The included hard copy Quick Start Guide doesn’t include much information and could be improved. There is an online Help package but you have to get to it by going thru the Setting menu. I’d suggest including that Help file as a Notebook so that it’s always available, even when the user doesn’t have an internet connection. Another feature that I think is going to be pretty important to this version of the Kindle is the ability to email documents to it. I’ve owned several of the previous versions of Kindle and I’ve always felt that this feature is slighted or completely ignored. I think the marketing and documentation should really highlight this,. Again, my first impression is very good. Most of my comments are nits, except for the pen attachment. I’m looking forward to spending more time getting to know the device. ... show more
