  • No hassle setup and money well spent
I purchased this to replace an aging Motorola/Arris SB6141 after I moved to the Comcast Xfinity Gigabit Internet tier. After setting it up and a quick call to Comcast/Xfinity to have it added to my account and an activation signal sent, I was good to go. Works as intended and I am getting the max download/upload speeds advertised so I couldn't be happier, not to mention no rental fee. Word of caution if you are an existing Comcast/Xfinity customer replacing your modem, don't bother with the instructions that mention to visit xfinity.com/activate to activate your equipment, it will most likely fail at the end right out of the box. To save yourself time and aggravation, do the following: 1. Remove your old modem from the coaxial and attach the new CM1000 modem. 2. Power it on and wait for the first 4 LED lights to go solid green (there are 5, but you won't see the fifth until you attach it to a NIC or home router) 3. Attach the included Cat 5E cable to the back and plug it into a laptop or nearby PC 4. Call 1-800-934-6489, go through the prompts until it connects you to the Comcast/Xfinity activation support agent. 5. Say you would like to replace the modem on your account, answer the account verification questions, and have your modem MAC address handy. 6. Provide the MAC address and wait for them to add it to your account and send the activation signal. They may ask you which version of the CM1000 you have, in which case answer the 1AZNAS. Once they confirm and send the activation signal, you will see the modem recycle itself a couple times before settling back on four solid green LED lights. 7. The support agent should have you test the connectivity after that and if all went well, you should be up and running. 8. (If you have a home router) Turn the router off/unplug it, and attach the Cat 5E/6 cable from the cable modem. Power cycle the cable modem one more time and wait for it to come fully back online with the four solid green lights. Turn on/plug the router power back in and let it fully come online as well. At this point, you will see the 5th green LED light on the modem indicating NIC connectivity and you should be good to go. NOTE: Once they properly send the correct bootfile/configuration to your modem the first time, any subsequent activations/provisioning (for instance if you move or swap modems then swap back) seem to work fine off of xfinity.com/activate. It is that out of the box initial configuration that fails with the automated setup. ... show more

  • Fixed my random rebooting problem
First, I’ve been in networking for 25 years most recently running a group doing L2/L3 SDN development. I just moved on to another company and got rid of the Comcast Business service and went with their GB offering. I was using an Arris Docsis 3.0 cable modem into an Orbi network with 6 nodes covering ~6000 square feet. I have over 30 devices connected to the network and do everything from video conferencing, Roku, AppleTV, Ring, Nest, PS4 and VoIP just to name some of the services I run. I also live in a canyon and I don’t have mobile phone service, so my mobile runs over my network, I’m definitely not suffering from the cobbler children scenario and I’m very picky when it comes to my network. When I got Comcast GB, I was between their business service and the new service so I used their Comcasts cable modem for a week, made by Netgear. It ran hot, provide slow service (using Speedtest and doing my own TraceRTs) and I turned their wireless service off to help stabilize the box, however, the box rebooted constantly. To replace it I originally went with the Arris 8200. Over the course of two months the network would go down randomly multiple times a week and usually with my son yelling “the network is down again” during Fortnite. I looked at the logs, nothing. Turned features on the Orbi off after reading their forums, didn’t work (not to blame but poor advice). Hard wired Roku, AppleTV, again reading forums, didn’t work. I had Comcast specialists come out check the wiring, look at the logs on their end, nothing. I finally concluded mostly because there was nothing else to try that it was the cable modem so I purchased the Netgear CM1000. Installation: I followed the poor instructions included with the modem and nothing, it showed connected but hardwired I wasn’t able to get anywhere. On my third try I decided to call Comcast support and have them install it. Gave them the mac address and my network dropped (I knew this would happen since again my network is my only source to the outside communications world). I noticed this time that the lighting sequence was different so I gave it some time, hardwired into the modem and all was well. I connected and booted the Orbi and the network has been up and stable since then, no random reboots. I run daily Speedtests and have noticed ~10% in overall performance from both wired and wireless devices over the Arris, however YMMV. Pros: - Works and I haven’t had the random reboots - By my measurements ~10% faster - Like the black over the Arris 8200 white Cons: - It does run a bit hot but nothing I’m worried about - Didn’t set up out of the box with Netgear saying in their documentation that if you have problems call the cable provider, poor customer service. Definitely the Arris was easier to set up. ... show more

  • Very good Cable Modem
This was my first time purchasing a refurbished cable modem, and I have to say, I’m impressed. I’ve been using it for about two weeks now, and it hasn’t disappointed me at all. What convinced me to try a refurbished modem was realizing that whenever you exchange a cable box, you’re usually given a used or refurbished one anyway. So I figured, why not? It made sense to give it a try. I’m very happy with my purchase and glad to give this cable modem a second life. It works perfectly with my Optimum service, and I haven’t experienced any issues so far. Definitely a great value for the price! ... show more

  • Easy set up
I replaced my older modem with this one because my old modem was no longer a supported version. I called my ISP after plugging in the modem, connecting my router, connecting my computer via USB and after writing down the serial number and mac address for the new router. It took about 5 min for the tech to add the modem to my account and to run a test. Then I simply connected to my already existing network. Note unless you also replace your router you just reconnect to your regular network. Also note a few devices you own may not automatically reconnect. For example, my wifi based security cameras did not sync. All I had to do was connect them via USB to my router until they reconnected. Telling you this so you have a realistic idea of steps you may need to take. Giving 4 stars for easy set up but could move up to 5 if it proves to be faster and more reliable than old modem. Fingers crossed! ... show more

  • Higher end modem with good performance and guts!
This is one of the best modems currently on the market. Works great with higher speed internet services. Gig speeds are a go with this guy. Also, uses Broadcom chipset, much better than intel puma’s that are in a lot of other products. This device does not have WiFi nor would I have bought it if it had. Not a big fan of the combos modems. For WiFi, you will need a dedicated wireless router for that part of the service. I’d recommend orbi and most nighthawks depending on your needs, size and budget. I am a seasoned cable repair/ install tech and I ve seen some reviews that say this is a bad product. I’d highly recommend if you have issues to get a technician from your internet service provider to trouble shoot your home cable system and network set up. Potentially minor cable issues here and there can add up, so it’s worth a call even if it’s a charge for them to repair any issues they may detect. Lastly my only regret was buying this in Dec 2018. I had been waiting patiently for a docsis 3.1 internet and telephone service capable modem but decided not to past up on a holiday sale. Current set up I have is my own modem for internet and a leased modem for telephone service only. So, a month or so later (2019) that’s exactly what netgear released but I was unable to return my modem to buy one of those because the return policy expired after 30 days. Guess I’ll have to wait a while for this one to pay its self off before I get that other model I believe is the docsis 3.1/telephone 1200 model number. So if you get both internet and telephone you will want that model not this one ( model 1000 does internet only). ... show more

  • Solved my internet connection issues
This modem has solved my internet connection issues. It has replaced an Arris SB6190, which I had nothing but problems with (the SB6190 would drop internet connections with WAVE frequently, causing me to have to reboot the darn thing all the time. I guess that Puma chip was to blame). The new Netgear CM1000 has proven to be stable, fast and error free. While I'm not using anywhere near it's gigabit speed potential (I'm on a 100 Mbps plan) it does scream along with my current speed showing not even a hiccup. Speed test confirm I'm getting slightly higher than 100 down, and a little higher than 5 up. This thing ALMOST makes me want to upgrade to a higher speed, with the knowledge that I know it can easily handle it. I've not had a single dropped connection in the week I've had it so far with WAVE since switching, which says a lot considering how many times I would have had to reboot the Arris (almost daily). Setup was super simply - I just called WAVE and gave them the mac address. A few minutes later and it connected right up. No worries at all. It also talks flawlessly with my new MR500 Netgear router. Between the two, call me impressed. ... show more

  • Happy Netgear User for 25 Years - Until Now
This hasn't been the worst product and customer support experience I've ever had, but it's definitely in the top 10. Which is too bad, because I've been a pretty happy Netgear user for more than 25 years. They're easy to find, they're pretty affordable, and they've always just worked. Until now, that is. We recently moved, and the modem I've been using for the past five years was a DOCSYS 3.0 and incompatible with plans from our new local ISP. I didn't hesitate to order this one to get up and running at our new house. And it worked pretty great for about four weeks, until just outside the Amazon return window. Then connections started dropping once a day. Then a couple times a day. Then the download speeds fell to less than 1 Mbps. (Upload speeds were fine.) I called my ISP, and they sent four technicians out here (bless them) until they concluded it must be a hardware problem with the modem. I'm not a network tech, but I know enough to be dangerous, and since their equipment showed power levels on the line within spec - AND their modem worked just fine - I agreed that the Netgear must be the culprit. Netgear tech support doesn't share that view. Despite all evidence to the contrary, their customer support people dug in. They insist it must be an issue with the ISP, despite the fact that the ISPs equipment is working just fine. The Netgear modem is the only device that reports power levels (JUST on the downstream channels) out of spec, but that didn't matter. Their support people are RIGIDLY tied to their support script, to the point that it became almost comical. The four support people I spoke to on nine phone calls over a period of two weeks would acknowledge the Netgear modem was the only device not working on my line, then insist in the next breath that it was the ISP's issue. They refused to escalate, and refused to replace the device even though I have several weeks left on my warranty. The value of the hours I've spent on this (to say nothing of the poor ISP and Netgear techs) is WAY more than the product is worth, so I'm cutting my losses. I'll rent or buy a modem from my ISP, and likely never buy a Netgear product again. I understand the products occasionally have issues, but if the customer support and warranty can't be trusted, that leaves me high and dry. I can't justify taking that gamble. ... show more

  • 1G speed ok but....
I was very excited to get to 1G speeds when I saw Comcast offer. I told myself finally US got on the same speeds with Europe where optical fiber is almost everywhere. Now for the bad news: I was unable to bring this online with Comcast, and waster hours for nothing really. It appears the modem goes through a rolling reboot. First power light comes green then the downstream then upstream then it goes back where it started from. Only once it came to light the Internet led however it was flashing for a bit and then went back to downstream again. Do not waste time with this modem, as a matter of fact with any of them. Comcast has 3 approved on their site but all of them have a ton of bad reviews and issues. Specifically the scenario I described above for CM1000 goes back to dec 2016. One would think they would be able to fix them in 2y. I have been in IT for a long time and could only conclude that the most of the ISP's in US preferred DOCSIS 3.1 instead of FTTH to maybe avoid running the fiber. However they failed testing DOCSIS 3.1 modems rigorously, to make sure they do work, and the vendors offer just a few of them all with miserable life expectancy. If you don't believe me just google every single one DOCSIS 3.1 out there. For now I upgraded my plan using my old DOCSIS 3.0 Motorola (still working after xx years) and will sit back until the ISP's clean this mess.... Update 4/2018. Comcast came and fix the issue with the signal, they inserted a tap between the CM and the cable and the netgear synced in less than 3m... All works now. The ISP measures the speed by asking you to connect the PC right at the CM ethernet port, that is the only way you will get 1G. taht is because once it passes a firewall, the tput will be slower, in my case 800k via a Cisco 5506X. ... show more
