  • Exceptional lens but VERY large
The optics in this are the best I have ever encountered in an add-on lens. It has a very large primary lens for exceptional light gathering ability even in low light. It includes an effective anti-glare coating and comes with a very nice dust cap and carry case. Unfortunately the lens is very large and I have not been able to find an effective way to mount it. The clip on mounts are just not up to the task. ... show more

  • BIG, Heavy, lens. Well made.
I have to admit, I never use my big SLR camera anymore. The camera on my phone is always in my pocket and it's takes pretty good pictures. But I do like to compose some shots and i do enjoy having some flexibility in how much light gets gathered. I discovered a phone case with a 17mm threaded lens carrier for my phone and I've been excited to see what my phone can do with changeable lenses and filters. What I've learned is that I needed a software app to give me access to the more advanced features of the camera on my phone. Adding a lense of this type will require that you have an app. It's not that the lens won't "work" without a camera app on your phone, The issue is that the phone is likely to go into macro mode and stay there when you actually want to use telephoto features. You will want to choose an F stop appropriate for the huge light gathering capabily of this lens. If all of what I just said is foreign to you, this lens is likely part of your future journey. If what I said does make sense to you, this is a great lense and you will immediately enjoy adding it to your collection. It is a very nice lens and it delivers excellent pictures of owls roosting in an oak tree in the back yard at night. That's what it's good for. Big light gathering telphoto. You will likely need a tripod, it is relatively heavy compared to a cell phone. ... show more

  • Absurdly large with middling results.
Neewer is typically a great brand that has the quality of SmallRig without the cost. So I was excited to try out this telephone lens from them. Unfortunately, it’s a bit disappointing. For one thing, the thing is huge just look how big it is compared to everything. I used it with Neewer’s excellent phone case that has a 17mm thread. It’s of course compatible with this lens, though the bulk makes it interesting to say the least. Of course, the main thing that you’re interested in is how the photos look. I took photos of my cats from a slight distance. Further away photos are without the lens, and more magnifying photos are, of course with the lens. The one of my cat on the table was in the telephoto lens slot of my phone. As you can see, even though it is multiple physical lenses, there is a very strange blurring effect that makes it look like software zoom. I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong here. The second image with my other cat a vase is in the regular wide angle slot, and zoom isn’t all that impressive, though the image is at least clear. Be mindful that much of the time, your phone might try switching into using multiple lenses, which won’t work for this. There are some apps like the Moment app that can help negate this. I am not an expert on optics, and so maybe I have not used or appreciated this properly, but it doesn’t seem like you’re getting good value with this. Even the best companies occasionally have a dud. ... show more

  • Heavy duty Lens
This lens is perfect for my iPhone 14 pro max. I will disclaimer-it's pretty heavy duty, I wasn't expecting it to be so heavy. It takes incredible photos! It enhances an already great phone camera and makes it even better. It's easy to attach to the phone and use. I've wanted a lens like this for a long time and am incredibly impressed and happy with this lens. I can't wait to use it more and get better with it. ... show more

  • Definitely worth trying
I usually use an 85mm lens when I shoot portraits and headshots on my Alpha. When I saw this I wondered if I could take some cool pics with my iPhone as well. Once the new case came I had my answer. I won’t use it professionally, but there are a bunch of situations where I’ll use it. I took it with me to a golf tournament that didn’t allow full sized cameras. This was a great way to shoot for the day. ... show more

  • Lens Has Potential, But Requires Extra Adapter
I was really excited to try the NEEWER HD 85MM Telephoto Phone Lens for my iPhone 13, hoping it would be a great addition to my photography gear. Unfortunately, I quickly realized it doesn’t fit without an adapter for the 17mm threaded backplates, which I wasn’t aware of beforehand. I had hoped this lens would be perfect for my photography work, but not having the right mount has been a setback. If you’re considering this lens, make sure you have or get the necessary adapter to make it work with your setup! ... show more

  • Well made lens, but no replacement for an SLR
As some others have noted, it's not immediately clear that this lens requires a separate cage kit or case with built-in 17mm threads. Make sure that before you buy this you have one of those. The sentence in the product copy that says "compatible with" is especially confusing; it's "compatible" with almost any smartphone camera lens given the proper cage. The lens itself is impressive. It's well made and heavy and from what I can see it's as well constructed as many of the old SLR lenses I used to use all the time. The main challenge i have with this lens is that it's just a bit impractical. For the price you're paying for this lens and a rig, you're already halfway to a pretty decent DSLR camera, and for all the advancements that smartphone cameras have made, there's really no substitute for a real camera if you're looking for true telephoto shots. Making matters worse, if you're using an iPhone, iOS can get really picky about when it switches to the telephoto lens, so even with a properly rigged lens you might not be able to use it at all. I wish this company would be able to give some practical advice on things like how to use the lens, which applications to use it with, and techniques for shooting, but you're pretty much on your own to figure it all out. All in all, a nice idea but not an especially practical one. ... show more
