Description

"The most lucid and effective guidance for transcending pain I have ever encountered." ―Charles T. Tart, PhD, editor of Altered States of ConsciousnessThe newest treatment for pain is one of the oldest, most effective strategies for pain-free living: mindfulness. With Natural Pain Relief, meditation expert Shinzen Young teaches you how to retrain your relationship to pain through traditional meditation practices. Drawing from 40 years of results in the field, this widely respected teacher offers the essential techniques that have proven successful at pain-management centers around the country. This integrated learning program adapts the core principles of mindfulness training to a practical process that can treat even extreme, chronic pain effectively, possibly reducing the need for drugs or surgery. Through step-by-step techniques taught in plain language, you’ll learn how to overcome your internal resistance to pain by observing and opening to it, which is the key to transforming physical suffering into a flow of pure energy. With regular practice, you can tap into your mind’s own power to overcome physical pain. Five guided practices include: How to deconstruct pain into manageable pieces • Experience how pain naturally transforms into energy • How to allow pain to dissipate into space • Use the "Breath Pleasure" technique to dramatically soothe pain • Free up your energy to heal and begin living your life again Previously released as Break Through Pain. • This book describes a method that is hard work, but it works
If you have chronic pain, inescapable pain, pain that doesn't respond enough to pain meds, or if you have had it with the fog that comes with pain meds, this is a path to a different relationship and experience of pain. And that, of course, is only a small part of the benefits of regular and focused practice of meditation. ... show more

  • Transcendent Usefulness
I was recommended to Shinzen Young by Mark Nunberg the head teacher of Common Ground Meditation Center. His recommendation was for a friend of mine dealing with bone cancer. A year later I found myself suffering with a pinched nerve and shoulder impingement that rivaled broken bones in painful sensation for me. The book and accompanying meditations (CD) helped me to reframe the pain, lesson my resistance, and surprisingly strengthened my meditation practice. This practice has also helped me with fear of death, and all manner of painful issues. Deep gratitude to Shinzen. ... show more

  • This method works
The book is well written and the bonus of a CD to help one master the Pain Relief system. Its not an overnite wonder but with consistent practice with the meditation one can get pain relief. Have tried all kinds of natural pain relievers to no avail. Have had some consistent results using this method. Practicing the meditations gives you more than pain relief but a desire to be mindfull in all situations. ... show more

  • Not written by monk, but by a scholarly practitioner probably more skilled than most.. Very interesting.
I am still reading this book - so this may be a bit premature. His credentials are interesting and that takes up the first few chapters before you get to the reason you bought the book. A toss up for me between the simplicity of Peace in Every Step by Thich Nhat Hanh and the more scholarly approach. However, I have a need to control pain, and this book was recommended by a friend who is a psychologist. I think the prices for these books are high for paperbacks - but then the knowledge may be well worth it. ... show more

  • I am so glad to have found this book and cd
The cd that comes with the book is worth the price alone. I am so glad to have found this book and cd. Anyone who suffers from chronic pain can benefit from this no nonsense read and guided meditation. Very practical and effective. Thank you Shinzen. Update: it’s been five years since this book came into my life and the meditation technique described is as relevant today as ever. So many people struggle with chronic pain these days as our population ages. Masking the pain with drugs or running from pain is not the solution. I have learned to accept and live with pain as a teacher rather than an enemy. ... show more

  • Super-duper to lose yourself in for a week or more
This book will start to teach you about how you can really conquer your pain. Skeptical at first, I gave it a try because it was highly recommended by my longtime friend Dr. Seth Farber, who also has big problems with pain. The accompanying CD was all right, but I only listened to it once. I did not see the need for all this after I had thoroughly read the book. ... show more

  • Natural Pain Relief is excellent!
I was never into "New Age" mumbo jumbo but since it is getting harder and harder to find a doctor that will treat chronic pain because they apparently think we are all drug-seeking addicts (instead of people who have been involved in head-on collisions by drunk drivers), I took a GIANT leap into New Age. I am pleased with this book/CD combo. This is not a quick fix and won't have you doing the mamba tomorrow, but it will teach you how to reduce your own suffering and improve the quality of your life. Give it a try, keep an open mind, and keep trying and you WILL experience a reduction in your suffering. ... show more

  • Better than medication
It has been said that pain is normal but suffering is optional (or something to that effect). The word "suffering" means the attitude toward any experience which we cannot accept, resulting in an agitated mind conflicted between what is and the way we want it to be. This book (with verbal instructions on a CD) presents a method of getting in touch with the "suffering" through a kind of meditative procedure. Once the pain is analyzed and accepted, the "suffering" diminishes and allows the source of the pain to heal. This book is recommended for anyone who is willing to "let go" of the need to be in control and who can accept "what is." ... show more
