This line of chisels are made from the finest materials available, have undergone superior heat treatment and been manufactured using the most stringent manufacturing processes.
  • Subsequent fine-grinding and polishing ensure a mirror-like surface with ultra-thin sides allowing reach into very tight spaces, making them the perfect chisel for cleaning out dovetails.
  • Chisel handles are made of domestically and responsibly harvested European Ash known for its strength, toughness and attractive grain. The ergonomic handles are sanded and then receive a friction shellac finish for maximum protection, comfort and control. Solid stainless-steel ferrules protect the handles from splitting, and leather washers absorb the shock of mallet blows.

Description

Narex, from the small village of Bystrice in the Czech Republic, has been making world-class tools for 100 years. The Narex factory was founded in 1919 by Mr. Vaclav Richter a local blacksmith who began producing chisels and gimlets. To this day, Narex is best known for making high quality, reasonably priced bench chisels. While the Narex factory has modernized much over the past century, it still retains many traditional manufacturing methods. Chisels are still produced using old-world drop-forging techniques which greatly enhances the strength and durability of the steel. To commemorate its 100 anniversary, Narex developed a new line of Richter Extra Chisels named after their founder. The Richter Extra chisels are the finest chisels Narex has produced in its 100 year history. This line of chisels are made from the finest materials available, have undergone superior heat treatment and been manufactured using the most stringent manufacturing processes. The new line of Richter Extra chisels will rival any premium chisel available in the world today. Richter chisel blades are made from the highest quality Chrome Manganese (Cr-V) steel using traditional drop-forging methods. Blades are then hardened, cryogenically treated and tempered to achieve a minimal hardness of 62 HRc. Subsequent fine-grinding and polishing ensure a mirror-like surface with ultra-thin sides allowing reach into very tight spaces, making them the perfect chisel for cleaning out dovetails. Bevel ground at 24 degrees. Following hardening, cryogenic treatment is performed which cools the steel down to −190° C (-310o F) using liquid nitrogen. This alters the mechanical properties of the steel at the molecular level greatly increasing its strength, toughness and wear resistance.Handles made of domestically and responsibly harvested European Ash with solid stainless steel ferrules.

    • Came Flat and Sharp, stayed that way
These took very little lapping to bring the back to absolute flatness (any new chisel will take some) especially compared to standard Narex. They stay sharp way longer than standard Narex, without much fuss honing on diamond plates/compound. They take a blistering sharp edge when honed and stropped on green compound. The primary bevel being a few ticks under 25 degrees makes for easy paring cuts including in end grain but didn't exhibit the tendency to chip harder steel sometimes do when I tested busting through some glue lines and knots. Bevelled edges taper down to minimal lands which along with the slim cross section make for easy access into most recesses. Compared to a lie nielsen, which is about 50% thicker at the base, it's hard not to feel like the slimmer cross section of these Narex might be more delicate but, in use, I have not noticed a difference in flex or deflection perhaps owing to the greater hardness of the steel, which typically comes with greater stiffness. Perhaps it's the best of both worlds where they can probably take the abuse but the feel reminds me not to be ham fisted. The handle too is well shaped and finished and most comfortable in a push/paring grip, as opposed to optimized for chopping down grip like a stanley 750 or lie nielsen, but works well for all bench chisel tasks/orientations. Your grip preferences, more than anything else, may determine whether you simply like or love these as that feel in hand is a very personal and subjective. Summary: Good fit and finish. Steel is great. Shape is comfortable and versatile. Feel in hand should be good to great, depending on preferences. Value is unmatched as I haven't used anything comparable that doesn't cost 50%-100% more. ... show more

This is a very high quality chisel set. It is not for beginners. I upgraded to this set from a starter set I purchased from a local tool store when I was a beginner. Beginner starter sets are great to learn how to sharpen chisels and for learning how to handle a chisel. This chisel set is one of the highest quality sets in the industry. Beauty, form, function. These classic European made manganese chrome chisels have a flawless finish. They shine. Smooth as silk. Heavy. Substantial. The beveled edges are razor clean and sharp. Smooth ash wood handles are shaped to be easy on the hands. Distinctive wooden chest good looking and will hopefully protect and preserve these tools for many years. Imagine anyone would be proud to own, use, pass these down to future generations of craftsmen. Craftpersons. Many fine projects to be crafted using these :) ... show more

    • Heirloom chisels.
I have a decent set of chisels (Wood River) but I wanted a 1.5 inch they don't make. I bought the 1.5" Richter based on James Wright's YouTube review. Spent a little time tuning it up, then ordered this set and the 1/8". My original intention to simply add a few premium chisels to compliment my basic set made sense, but these are so much better. Wright rated them best all around. I'm not in as good a position to compare, but the quality out of the box is almost as good as my one Lie-Nielsen mortice chisel. They don't arrive perfectly perfect--any chisel needs honed, and the backs of these need a bit of flattening for best performance. (These weren't bad at all, just not perfect.) The nearest thing I have to a complaint is that the very nice box for the 5 pc. set doesn't have room for the 1/8 and 1.5". But I am thinking a nice box out of ash to match their beautiful handles would be a fun project. Overall, these are premium chisels comparable to anything I've seen at a very reasonable price.     • Sharp, well made and polished to mirror finish!
They are amazing value. The bevel design is perfect for working on dovetails and the blades are razor sharp out of the box. Speaking of which, it’s a very nice presentation and would make a great gift!
