  • Good quality and okay edge retention
They are pretty sharp right out the box, and they do hold an edge. My chip knife almost immediately lost its point however

  • World of difference
I have been tinkering around with hand carving for a few month now, and quickly found I needed a little more precision than my pocket knife was giving me, so I went out and bought some cheap chisels at a department store. Those will be for beating on with a hammer. Next, I got a more expensive Stanley Fat Max chisel and could not believe the difference in quality. I felt I needed something else to help me make specialty cuts and patterned gouges, so I ordered these. There is not much comparison between what these can do and even the reasonable quality of the Stanley chisel. They are sharp, easy to control (the short handles help a lot with that). These chisels really shine at cutting across the grain, I had yet to get tear out with them. They cut on the mark and don't take out anything extra. For the price, for someone who wants to get started without investing a fortune, these are highly recommended. Just take your time to learn proper techniques and for heaven's sake, watch your hands, these things are sharp! ... show more

  • Great mini set
Using these for a short while, excellent set. Sizes are good for mini carvings but not quite for ultra fine work. The bevels are a little steep and excellent for hogging out bulk and moving deep. These stall against end grain due to the aggressive nature of the tools. You can always sharpen them to a different bevel but these are also beginner tools and where I think these help out beginners is it gets the job done quit and are small enough to be used by hand. I'd recommend beginners also grab a whittling knife or another straight night with a fine point to assist with additional detail. ... show more

  • Good tools, sharpen first.
These are solid starter tools to do small/intricate wood carving. They come with a bevel ground but no secondary bevel or honing. (pictured after honing) If you've bought edge tools before this is perfectly normal. For a beginner, this could be confusing, especially as they include a block of "Lime" (basswood) to start with but do not mention the need to sharpen before first use. A solid product that will probably outlast me, but slightly flawed marketing. ... show more

  • Quality Chisels for their price Range
Nice chisels, they did require honing, the bevels had significant scratches. Although I feel these are nice carving chisels they are not a starter set as stated. Most are too big for any detail carving. It needs a smaller gouge in this set. They are definitely of higher quality than some chisels of this price range. ... show more

  • Could be better.
Well...They are a cheap set....ya get what ya pay for. They look nice, are fairly sharp out of the box. All the chrome handle caps just below the blade were loose and rattled around so I used a few drops of super glue to hold them in place. Have not used them yet except to make a few practice cuts on the block of wood that comes with the chisels.(checking out how sharp they were.) I bought these because I am just starting to wood carve and whittle and figured these would be good for beginning. If I get really into it I'll buy better tools later. For the beginner on a budget I think this set might be okay....time will tell. ... show more

  • Good set for beginners
As usual with this company very acceptable tools at a very reasonable price. Trying to take up a new hobby like wood carving can be daunting when you factor in the cost of chisels running upwards of $30 to $50 each. This set has a good variety of shapes for the beginner. They take and seem to hold a good edge. There are cheaper sets out there but I'll bet those are not half the quality these are! ... show more
