    • I have over 30 of these panels setup in my flat
These are good for what they are, thin panel led lights that can be integrated into a home automation environment. I'm a software architect with about 5 years of IOT experience. As stated I have at least 30 of these setup in different arrangements around my flat. Soon to be 60+. That said, these are not for the faint of heart. If you're just buying a few panels for a specific backdrop, I'd recommend forgoing the app altogether and just use the controller on the light. One of my covid projects was to build out home automation using home assistant in docker. These integrate nicely with my setup. I control the lights through home assistant only to avoid using the app (after initial setup I don't use the controller or the app at all). Pros - Good color range - Okay out of the box animations (you can use the app to create your own) - Versatile - Thin - Good for flat if you want to avoid damaging walls (more on this in the cons section) - Wifi support (sort of -- more on this in the cons section) - Works with home assistant - A couple of them have been dropped from a height of 3-4ft due to my butterfingers and survived without issue Cons - If you're looking to use these as a primary light source, expect to need at least 20-30 panels -- 20 of the hex lights will be about 2000 lumens - Overpriced for what they are (hoping that means they have some longevity and will last multiple years, but time will tell - I've got about 6 months of use on these so far) if you're purchasing a large amount, look at all the deals out there by the per panel price, ideally you can get down to around $20 or less per panel - Don't use the provided tape (as other reviewers noted, this is a complete waste and likely part of nano's nickle and dime strategy, instead, spend the additional ~$20 and get some solid 3M removable large velcro strips I use 2 strips per panel and it works very well even on the ceiling) - Included powersource only works for up to 22 panels then you have to buy a different powersource that works for about 35 panels (that powersource is a hell of a lot clunkier than the 22 panel one as well as more expensive), then after 35 you have to buy another powersource.... etc etc more of that delightful nickle and dime strategy - Flex linkers, like the powersource are also extra - The android app is terrible, it's not very intuitive, it regularly loses connection... After initial setup, I try to use it as little as possible - Updating firmware must be done using the app, you cannot download firmware from nanoleaf and push it directly. Consequently, updating firmware is.... an awful and atrocious experience. >> 1. You must use the update frimware screen in the app >> 2. The update firmware screen provides no useable logging or feedback >> 3. The update firmware screen will say up to date and NOT report a firmware version, it's goverened by an unknowable refresh cycle that you have no control over and cannot force >> 4. You cannot force an update, you can only update once the unknowable refresh cycle allows it >> 5. The update firmware process is overall obscure, finicky, and extremely time consuming -- If you simply cannot get one of your controllers to update a new controller can be purchased from Nanoleaf directly (another part of their nickle and dime strategy). It's ~$40 (a complete ripoff) but you decide what your time is worth. - Setting these up is also a pretty terrible experience, the trick for me having a 5g and 2.4g wifi networks is to completely turn off the 5g network and then reset all the APs with just 2.4g on to set these things up (after setup I turn 5g back on and reset the APs again -- using ubiquity unifi APs). I use manual setup and make sure to take a picture of the code on the powersource. If you're not familiar with wifi networks, only buy this if you plan to control it using the controller on the light itself or it will likely make you hate life. I would also add that once setup, be prepared for your nanoleaf connection to be unavailable or disconnect in the app every few seconds for hours or up to a day before it ... settles down and becomes reliable. Why buy these instead of the other knock-offs? For me personally, these have better API support for home automation (more fine grained control in home assistant)... if that doesn't matter to you, then go for the knock-offs some of which do support smartlife/ tuya apis. Note: I've used IOT devices from LIFX, Xiaomi, Aqara, Tuya, etc and I can honestly say that Nanoleaf's app and software is pretty much the worst of the lot, be prepared ... show more

    • Pricey, but awesome!
These are really fun. My son loves them in his room, nice music reactivity or just mood lighting. You can change the layout easy by using 3M command strips instead of the supplied double sided tape.
