  • Very quiet, kind of small-ish
I’ve owned several dust collectors before, so I have a pretty good concept of them, what works and what does not. Although I’m sure that not everyone’s preference aligns with mine. This little thing is aesthetically pleasing, simple but nice design. The dust collector has 3 speeds, and instead of using a button (with 3 pushes) or a knob, it has separate buttons for each speed. This is the first machine I had like this, my others either had only 1 speed, or had a singular button/knob dedicated for changing the speed and/or turning them off and on. This one also has a separate button to turn it off and on. I suppose it is convenient because you don’t have to press one button multiple times. It has one large fan right underneath a filter which does help with most of the dust, although some still gets through. I also use a thin filter paper, which helps to catch the larger particles so they don’t even make it in the filter, and you can just pick it up and throw it away. It keeps my filters longer without having to replace them. With the lowest speed, which is of course the quietest, you have to hold your hand and the file pretty close, or the dust just flies away instead of getting sucked into the filter. I usually rest my hand on the grate so it’s not a big deal for me, and I prefer it quieter if possible. The second setting is pretty good, still fairly quiet, and does a good job of collecting the nail dust. The third level definitely collects the best, but it is also the loudest. I did appreciate the quietness of it, as I usually listen to something with my earbuds while doing my nails, and have to turn up the volume quite a bit to be able to hear it well. With this one, even at the middle speed, I did not need to turn it up at all. I am not crazy about the grate (they call it lid). It’s made of thin plastic bars with large gaps in between them. The bars are about 5-6mm tall and maybe 1mm wide (tall and thin), which doesn’t help with getting the dust into the filter more than thicker bars. I would much prefer the bars to be even taller and somewhat wider so once the dust gets down, it won’t be able to come back up when you’re brushing the dust from the top. In the listing they call it “compact” which it is, I would say almost too much so. I suppose for someone with very little room it would be good, personally, I prefer it to be larger as a larger surface can capture more dust. One more negative is that it only comes with one filter, all my others had at least one extra filter in the box. ... show more

  • A polished device thoroughly thought through
My first impression out of the box of the Voltrish Nail Dust Collector was that this is a solid, polished (pun intended, but still appropriate), refined device. Then I read in its clear, well written guide that removing its top grill when the fan is active triggers an auto-off feature, which I immediately confirmed. There’s no visible mechanism for this – it’s done with magnetic sensors. Cool! The Voltrish Nail Dust Collector is one of the rare powered products that actually includes its own power supply (adapter). (Since I'm starting to run low on old phone adapters, that's a welcomed plus.) It's not USB but a barrel type, and outputs 12V instead of USB's 5V, but that's only a negative if you need to troubleshoot a suspected power supply problem. In any event, the manufacturer wants you to use only theirs anyway (no doubt to avoid burning out the dust collector – or worse – by substituting a bad or improper adapter). Once turned on, I could see (and hear) that this is a powerful device. As a solution to a vexing problem for me, it might be over-kill for my modest ambition of using it near my computer keyboard to, hopefully, redirect my cat’s ever-present air-borne hairs away from the keyboard and into the dust collector. Testing is on-going. In fairness to this review, I knew I needed to also try the Voltrish Nail Dust Collector for its intended use, at least for nail dust. (I realize it’s also useful for redirecting dust that might otherwise settle on polish while professionally painting nails. Maybe because I’m a man, the only nails I ever paint have been previously driven into a board 😁, so I won’t be testing that use.) As you might expect, the amount of nail dust that one session can generate is minute (pronounce “my-noot”). So, when done, I carefully examined the workspace and the filter. The workspace was clear, but bear in mind that the Nail Dust Collector’s exhaust is cast horizontally, creating a dusting effect. More probative were the carefully examined distings of the filter. There did appear to be an effective collection of the small amount of nail dust that 10 fingernails could be expected to produce. Well, all this is sufficient for me to rate the Voltrish Nail Dust Collector all 5 stars. ... show more

  • Works well but a bit loud on medium or high speed
This nail dust collector is a useful tool, though it does get fairly loud as you increase the fan speed. It easily handles pulling in dust, sanding, and other small-scale tasks, offering good suction on the highest setting. The unit has a medium footprint roughly 6.5 by 6.5 inches with rounded corners and a 2.25-inch thickness making it easy to integrate into a desk or small workstation. While the housing is entirely plastic, it feels durable and well-constructed. I also liked the magnetic filter cover, which not only simplifies access but also includes a built-in safety shutoff when it’s removed. Maintenance is straightforward since the filter is designed for dry cleaning without water or solvents. Beyond nail care, this collector is versatile enough to handle light dust from small hobby projects, like Dremel work on plastic, though it isn't suitable for heavier debris like metal shavings. (Useful while sanding down smaller 3d prints) Priced at around $20 at the time of this review, this dust collector offers great value for hobbyists or occasional users who need a compact workspace collector. You just have to be willing to tolerate the noticeable noise level at medium and high speeds. Pros • Durable plastic housing with a convenient desk-friendly footprint • Strong suction power on the high setting • Easy-to-clean dry filter with a magnetic grill for quick access • Built-in safety shutoff when the cover is removed • Versatile enough for light hobby dust like Dremel projects • Highly affordable at $20 Cons • Noticeably loud at medium and high speeds Rating: 4.3 out of 5 ... show more
