I've been a bass player for 50 years and have played most of that time without any pedals of any sort, except an EQ and a compressor. I wanted to branch out and add some modulation. I first bought an Aguilar Octamizer octave pedal and it was marvelous, but very expensive. I wanted to add a phaser pedal to get that O'Jays "For the Love of Money" sound, but wanted to avoid spending $200 for an Aguilar phaser unit. I read up on the MXR Phase 90, listened to several YouTube videos and decided it would serve my needs for less than half the price of the Aguilar unit, and after receiving it, it DOES sound very nice. I can get the phaser sound I'm looking for and when I added the octave pedal, it was truly an awesome tone. HOWEVER...the pedal fails in my opinion because of a major design flaw. The input for the charging port is on the side of the unit, as shown in the attached photo. It is much too close to the pedal's input jack, such that any slight movement of the pedal will disconnect the charging wire from the pedal, which in turn shuts off the rest of my pedals. Also, it's almost impossible to configure the input cord in such a way that its placement doesn't impact putting the power cord in the receptacle. I realize I could use a 9-volt battery to power the unit, but batteries die out and it's too much of a hassle to change batteries, particularly if the battery went out during a performance. Why the manufacturer didn't put the power input at the top of the unit as the majority of all pedals generally are is beyond me. Thus, I am returning this pedal and just going to bite the bullet and purchase an Aguilar Grape Phaser. That pedal's charging port is at the top , along with its input and output jacks and frankly produces a much better tone than the Phase 90. Sometimes it's better to spend more money for better quality and more intelligent design. As I mentioned earlier, the pedal does sound nice, but I can't recommend it because of the design flaw. Perhaps the thought of losing all your power on your pedalboard during a performance doesn't bother you, but it's something I can't tolerate. Do yourself a favor and purchase another pedal. If you're an MXR fan, perhaps consider the MXR Phase 95 pedal, which has the power jack at the top of the pedal. I've never used it, but it's bound to be the equal of the Phase 90. The MXR Phase 90 is a classic stompbox popularized by Eddie Van Halen. At present, I own an MXR Phase 90, a Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter, and a Line 6 MM4 Modulations Modeler (with a few phaser patches), so I can compare these three units. The Phase 90 has a single "Speed" control that sets the rate of the phase, so it is simple to use. If there is a single knob, that is a good indicator that the manufacturer feels pretty good about the sound of the unit. In this case, I agree. The MXR Phase 90 is by far the cheapest of these three units. In my opinion, it also gives the best sound within its capabilities, and actually seems to boost the volume slightly. The Boss PH-3 gets a slight volume drop but it is workable, and the Line 6 MM4 has a volume drop that for me is hard to use on a guitar pedalboard because I usually don't leave modulations on for an entire song, but turn them on/off in different sections (unless its a chorus). Of the three, the Phase 90 has the least versatility. You can imitate the Phase 90 sound on both of the other units (the Line 6 MM4 does a slightly better job) and both the PH-3 and MM4 have more sonic possibilities. Also, the Boss PH-3 will give a lot more spacey extremes than the Phase 90 which stays in a "normal" range. But again, of the three the MXR Phase 90 sounds the best of the three at what it can do. Bottom Line: (1) A classic pedal at a great price (2) Great sound & slight volume boost (3) Simple to use (4) Limited sonic possibility, "safe" or "normal" guitar sounds (no crazy extremes) (5) Beautiful bright orange color, you can't miss it (6) Compact size does not eat up pedalboard space ... show more

Can’t go wrong with getting a classic Phase 90, I run it in the effects loop of a TC infinite sustain pedal, in the loop I also place a Soft Focus Reverb Pedal, Flanger and DD-200

This is one of the all time great effects. It along with the Dunlop Cry Baby Wah-wah need to be in the rock n roll hall of fame. It is easy to use and to dial in a great phase shift accent. I had one of these for about 20 years until it was accidentally left behind after a show. I have tried, Ibanez, Boss, Digitech and Behringer but none had the sound I liked, wanted or was accustomed too. Since they are so inexpensive, although Behringer is less expensive, I just went back to old reliable. The other selling point, if it is good enough for EVH, it is good enough for me. ... show more
