Description

Music for Native American Flute, Volume One is a collection of 40 pieces from all over the world. The music is set in the Nakai system of tablature notation (Nakai TAB) as well as standard music notation, and all of the pieces have fingering charts beneath the tablature. The book also includes notes about each piece as well as fingering charts for both pentatonic and extended scales. It is not necessary to read music or TAB to play the tunes in this book. The accompanying CD features all of the tunes in the same order in which they appear in the book. Those players who don’t read music or tablature can use the CD to learn the rhythms of the pieces. The music in this volume was thoughtfully — and joyfully — selected specifically for Native American Flute; wandering Kokopelli-style through a world of tunes, the author chose dances, lilts, and ancient songs, some as old as the rock art images of Kokopelli himself. A dance from the Greek islands, a rant from the Scottish highlands, a melody from the mountains of Peru, and an ancient song captured almost 800 years ago by the quill of a Castilian king are a few of the pieces collected. Each tune has that inexplicable but necessary magic, the quality which draws the flutist to play it again, just one more time... Read more

  • Outstanding global influences for the Native American flute
Music for Native American Flute is my first songbook by Jessica Walsh, who has penned numerous other books on Celtic, Renaissance, Medieval, world, and ancient Spanish music for flute. Music for Native American Flute Vol. 1 showcases 41 songs from around the globe adapted for Native American flute tablature, most in the key of G. There are songs from all corners of the globe: from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, England, Italy, Greece, Russia, medieval Spain, Israel, Palestine, Syria, Japan, Canada, First Nations (Ojibway), America, Peru, and Ecuador, all adapted for the range and voice of Native American flute. Each tune is described in the front of the book, its country of origin, and a bit about the tune's history. There is also an audio CD that features all 41 songs, so you can listen as you read/play along. Normally associated with First Nations music, the Native American flute is a virtual chameleon here, taking on the breathiness of a Syrian nay, the haunting song of the Andean panpipes, the dulcet tones of a Medieval recorder. The amazing feat is that a simple instrument that is generally heard in First Nations/New Age music in a much-simplified context has, thanks to Jessica Walsh, pushed the envelope into a virtuosic instrument capable of handling European airs, dance, and Eastern laments. I can't wait until a Vol. 2 is released, hopefully with more Eastern (Indian, Chinese, Middle Eastern) flavour. ... show more

  • Awesome book
I was researching a lot of books for my Key of G Native American flute and finally decided to go with this one, and I am glad I did! PRO: 1) This book wastes not time with unnecessary details about the history, design etc etc. It immediatelly starts off with the songs from various parts of the world that sound really good on the Native American flute. I followed the aurthors advice and started off with the ones that she said were the easiest to begin with, and so far so good! I'm enjoying it! 2) The book comes with a CD with all the songs on it. This played a BIG role in helping me learn the music 3) All the Sheet music is accompanied with a pictures of which holes of the flute to cover, under every note. That helped me like crazy as i am new to sheet music. CON: 1) Hardly any Native American music. But I'm not complaining as the other music thats here sounds awesome! 2) The music on the CD isn't named. So I had to transfer to my Itunes and rename them before putting them on my I-Pod. ... show more

  • What a Difference this Book Has Made!
I had my flute for a few weeks before buying this book. I had been learning via websites on the internet and all of that but knew that I needed more. This book has been just the thing. The songs are beautiful and diverse and relatively easy (although they get more complex as they go). The cd is invaluable. It alone was worth the money! But it was important to put it on my iPod so that each piece was labeled and I could co-ordinate it with the book and then play the songs. The cd itself doesn't tell you what song it is playing (that's why I gave it four stars instead of five, and also the book doesn't stay open well--needs to be 3 ring style). My skills have improved by leaps and bounds and these 40 songs will give me many, many hours of fulfillment playing my flute. ... show more

  • Best book for Native American Flute!!!
This is by far the best book for Native American Flute (NAF) that I have come across. There is a wide variety of songs from around the world - although most are Celtic in origin. The CD has 40 tracks on it and is just under 1 hours long. It is good just to listen to for its own sake! There a few Native American songs included - but the main the benefit of this book is the very fact that it opens up many differnet styles of music to the player. Most of the other books I have seen are limited in their scope and are focused on one particular type of music. ... show more

  • Big Disappointment
Very disappointed. Title of "Music for Native American Flute" is very misleading. Of the 40 songs in the book, 2 are Ojibway. All the rest are Irish, Scottish, Welsp, Spanisc and South American. Sorry does not meet my definition of Native American. Also find the use of Carlos Nakai's name to be misleading. Somehow, the name lends creadence to the Native American title. Actually only his fingering techniques are being used, with non-native American music. I feel scammed.Music for Native American Flute, Vol. 1 (Book & Audio CD)ed. ... show more

  • Music not Native American however wonderful music for Native American flute
This provides some really nice variety for intermediate level NA flute playing. I have some other beautiful song books with Native American/ Native American inspired music. This song book provides an opportunity to play different styles of music, I love some of the Irish/ Scottish/Welsh songs. I do not want to play Mary Had a Little Lamb, etc. :) ... show more
