Description

Nirvana: Kurt Cobain (vocals, acoustic guitar); Dave Grohl (vocals, bass, drums); Krist Novoselic (guitar, accordion, bass). Additional personnel: Cris Kirkwood (acoustic guitar, bass); Pat Smear, Curt Kirkwood (acoustic guitar); Lori Goldston (cello). Recorded live at Sony Music Studios, New York, New York on November 18, 1993. UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK is part of MTV's "Unplugged" series. UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Sadly, MTV Unplugged stands as Nirvana's last album. While it's an album of covers and old songs, it ranks as one of the band's most cohesive records. Instead of relying on the trio's overpowering sonic force, Unplugged concentrates on Kurt Cobain's subtly shaded songwriting and Nirvana's deceptively simple musical power. Every version of their previously recorded songs, with the possible exception of "On a Plain," dramatically improves the original, and the covers reveal more about Cobain than he intended. By the time Nirvana close with a wrenching, spine-chilling version of Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night," the emotional complexity of Nirvana's music is clear. It's also clear that they could have made even greater music. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

  • A Timeless
Listening to Nirvana – MTV Unplugged in New York on vinyl for the first time was truly engaging and surprisingly relaxing. From the opening track, it immediately pulls you in and creates an intimate atmosphere that feels honest and deeply emotional. Unlike many other unplugged albums, this one genuinely connects. The song choices are thoughtful, raw, and beautifully performed, showcasing Nirvana’s musical depth beyond their grunge reputation. Each track feels purposeful, and the acoustic arrangements highlight Kurt Cobain’s vulnerability and artistry. It’s the kind of record you can sit with from start to finish without skipping a song. I do wish they had included “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” but even without it, the album stands incredibly strong and complete. On the practical side, the handling and packaging were excellent. The vinyl arrived well-protected, with no damage at all, clean, flat, and ready to play right out of the sleeve. If you’re a Nirvana fan, a vinyl collector, or someone who appreciates intimate live recordings, this is an absolute must-have. It’s not just an album, it’s an experience that sounds even more powerful and warm on vinyl. Highly recommended for anyone thinking of adding this classic to their collection. ... show more
