Description

"Not The Smile as in ha-ha-ha, more The Smile as in the guy who lies to you every day"... so speaks Thom Yorke on the inspiration behind the name of the new trio consisting of himself, his Radiohead bandmate Jonny Greenwood and drummer Tom Skinner of UK jazz outfit Sons of Kemet. The description is borne out by The Smile's acerbic first single "You Will Never Work In Television Again," a 2:48 blast of ragged, raw energy that moved The New York Times to rave: "Over a bruising 5/4 beat and flailing guitars climbing through three chords, Yorke snarl-sings his avenging fury at 'some gangster troll promising the moon' who'd devour 'all those beautiful young hopes and dreams,' and you can almost feel the spittle flying." Additional singles "The Smoke", "Skrting the Surface" and "Pana-Vision" - which epically closed the series finale of hit show Peaky Blinders - followed with equal critical acclaim; all are collected on The Smile’s first album, A Light For Attracting Attention, produced by Nigel Godrich. • Great album...defective CD pressing
I have seen few if any discs like this one. The info area has a weird sawtooth/fan like pattern (see photo). It played fine up to track 11 and then started cutting out and jumped to the next track. The player I use plays everything and never skips on anything. My only guess is that the layers are not glued correctly (hence the pattern) and will eventually split apart and fail. It's sad that with so many new LP's arriving with defects, even new cd's aren't immune. This is what happens when you go too fast and try to cut corners & costs. The songs that will play sound fantastic and this is a great album that I would like to hear in its entirety. Update: A replacement was requested and it ultimately shared the same physical and audio defects. 5 stars for the music, 3 stars for the pressing quality. ... show more

  • The fragile beauty of our ephemeral existence
Sometimes it takes me a while to click with Radiohead's music--I hated Moon Shaped Pool for a few years and now I love a number of songs on that album. By extension, I suspect it will take some time to appreciate all the material on this album by The Smile, but I instantly loved a number of its tracks. Open the Floodgates, We Don't Know What Tomorrow Brings and Skrting on the Surface are among my early faves, and Free in the Knowledge will make you cry if you have even a modicum of feeling. If I had to identify a theme for the album, I would say that it is the fragile beauty of our ephemeral existence. ... show more

  • Best "Radiohead" since Hail To The Thief
Great album! With all of their releases since Hail To The Thief I've felt like Radiohead was trying to sound like Radiohead. Good, but not the same creative spark as their prior albums. With "A Light for Attracting Attention" there is a creativity and a texture to the sound that has been missing from Radiohead for years. A little jazz, some horns, strings. And finally some Jonny Greenwood guitar coming through. Great melodies. And Thom's voice is expressive and in fine form, as always. Don't miss it. ... show more

  • Superb.
This is the best album any of the members of Radiohead have done since In Rainbows. If somebody told me this was the new Radiohead album not only would I believe them, but I'd be elated. I think this is better than Pablo Honey, The King of Limbs, A Moon-shaped Pool, The Eraser, Tomorrow's Modern Boxes, Anima or Ed's solo album. I have listened to it many times and I love it dearly. Buy it. ... show more
