Description

Moving into Meditation is a practical and inspiring guide to integrating mindful yoga and embodied meditation, in a 12-week format. One week at a time, Moving into Meditation lays out a plan for exploring body-based practices to get you more in tune with not only your limbs and core but your mind and heart. Cushman's curriculum integrates asana with mindfulness meditation to help practitioners turn "embodiment" from a concept into a tangible reality. Her insightful mixture of practices, yoga history, and Buddhist philosophy are made relevant to your present-day life. Personal stories from the "trenches" of decades of practice and teaching add color; Cushman's characteristic poetic and funny voice makes all readers feel that much more human. Cushman believes --and experience proves--that by becoming better attuned to and acquainted with the body, the physical forms become a vehicle for becoming more intimate with yourself and your world. From there, we can explore and embody the teachings of the Buddha for a more awakened life. In recent years, "mindfulness" has blasted into mainstream culture much as yoga did two decades ago, making "mindful yoga" an appealing trend. But how does mindful yoga evolve from a buzz-worthy concept to a lived experience? How do yoga asanas and pranayama support and express the practice of meditation? How do you explore the teachings of the Buddha through the vehicle of your own living, breathing, human body? As we quickly learn, the practices are inherently entwined. Experienced yoga and meditation teacher Anne Cushman answers all these questions and more in Moving into Meditation, teaching us to deepen our asana practices with mindfulness meditation and enhance our meditation practice with asana. With compassion, humor, and deep intelligence, Moving into Meditation guides us through integrating mind, body, and spirit practices for a wide-awake life. Read more

  • For those who sense that yoga is more than just a physical practice...
This book quickly became one of my ALL-TIME favorite yoga books. And that is saying a lot, since I have been practicing, reading, and studying since 1998, and I am a pretty geeky yoga teacher. Also, as a longtime meditator, I have been aware that there are very few books out there that bring together the physical yoga practice with Buddhist meditation practices in such a clear and meaningful way. Anne Cushman is a wonderful writer - funny, sweet, descriptive, inspiring, and she presents the intricate details of these practices with care in a way that avoids either dumbing them down or overwhelming the reader. After all, it is no easy task to integrate two of the world's great wisdom traditions (yoga and Buddhism), acknowledging their interconnected roots, their philosophical overlaps and departures, their evolutions into mainstream culture, and the ways they can inform each other in the day-to-day space of our practice. There are many exercises within for bringing awareness onto your mat, but the book does not prescribe certain yoga styles or sequences for the most part. She does suggest both active practices (standing poses, sun salutations, etc) and Yin poses. If you like the work that Sarah Powers does, you will also like this a lot. There is also excellent guidance for how you can translate your work on the mat into your sitting meditation practice, even if you are new to meditation. In fact, this book will help you get started, as it skillfully uses yoga to prepare the body/mind/energy system for formal meditation. I highly recommend following her 12-week program as outlined in the book - you will find daily inspiration here, and maybe even transform how you approach your yoga. ... show more

Both the novice and the seasoned practitioner will find joy in taking this course. Anne teaches on many levels and proves to be masterful at each one. • If you want to integrate your meditation practice more fully with your yoga practice, this book is a great resource!
Anne is wise, compassionate and humorous. If you want to integrate your meditation practice more fully with your yoga practice, this book is a great resource! The practices really help to cultivate a deeper, more refined ability to sense the body during your meditation practice, yoga practice, and your day. The book seems to reference some audio files that are not freely available but it is definitely able to stand alone without the recordings. ... show more

  • Engaging, inspiring, insightful and funny
Sometimes the just right person writes the just right book at the just right time. This is it! Anne Cushman is a most remarkable author who could take any subject and make it rich, deep and insightful, tender, funny and utterly human. She speaks human. Here’s an excerpt from the prologue: “Even if you haven’t answered your e-mail or paid the IRS or thrown out the three-week-old pasta that’s festering at the back of your fridge or fixed the broken screen door that’s banging in the rising wind of an incoming storm. Even if the person you’re in love with just fell in love with someone else. Even if your kids have commandeered all of your meditation cushions and yoga mats to build an obstacle course in your living room…” See what I mean? She gets what it is to live in this world because she lives it. She teaches and writes in a way that makes it safe for her students and readers to be honest with their own vulnerabilities and imperfections, and to be more compassionate. And to take a breath! Any book by Anne would be worth reading, but THIS is her subject, the one she knows probably better than anyone in the world. So not only can you enjoy reading it, you will actually be learning from a teacher who has lived at the confluence of meditation and yoga and has been a prime mover in connecting the two practices in the West, for the great benefit of us all. ... show more
