  • A Hot Meal in the Cold Wilderness
Flavor Name: Breakfast Skillet
When I first saw the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet, I was suspicious-freeze-dried sausage and eggs didn’t sound particularly appetizing. However, after a chilly pre-dawn camping trip when I could see my breath, I decided to give it a try, and the smell of cooking peppers and hash browns wafting from that tiny pouch actually surprised me. This meal comes with eggs, sausage, peppers, and shredded potatoes, all freeze-dried for easy preparation and convenience. To make it, all I did was boil some water in my portable stove and pour it in the pouch. After waiting about 10 minutes, it was all ready to eat. Although it costs a bit more than a granola bar, the under-$10 price feels fair for the quality and simplicity it provides, especially when you’re miles away from a kitchen. I expected something rubbery or bland, but the potatoes had texture, the sausage had a smoky flavor, and it was surprisingly filling. It’s also gluten-free, which doesn’t necessarily affect me, but it is good for those whose diets adhere to it. I loved how light, easy, and genuinely tasty it was, though it is slightly salty and requires boiling water since there’s no cold prep option. Overall, I’d give the Mountain House Breakfast Skillet a solid 5 out of 5 stars and would definitely purchase it again. It’s perfect for campers, hikers, or even an emergency food supply-if you want a hot, homemade-style breakfast in the wilderness, this one delivers. ... show more

  • Great quality and taste for freeze dried food

We love mountain house freeze dried foods which we have a good amount in the big cans in case of needing emergency food. We like this breakfast skillet so we order it occasionally and eat it together as it’s so easy and tastes great

  • Solid vegetarian option!
Flavor Name: Veggie Chorizo Breakfast Scramble ...
There's not a lot of hot Mountain House options for vegetarians. Pasta Primavera and Macaroni & Cheese (if you let it rehydrate for twice as long as recommended) are about it. I was surprised to find this Veggie Chorizo scramble and gave it a try. Gotta say, it's pretty good! Good flavor. Tender eggs. It's got some spiciness to it but not excessively pepper-hot. I wish more of the water absorbed--wish the rehydrated meal was a little drier--it'd probably be possible to carefully pour off excess water before eating. I found myself wishing I had a couple of tortillas and some shredded cheese--this would make a great breakfast burrito filling. I'd give it 5 stars if not for being a bit soupy. ... show more

  • Tip-top!
Flavor Name: Breakfast Skillet
When I was in college, I, “accidentally” found my way into an old Cold War bomb shelter. There were lots of freeze dried meals, so I liberated a few, being a poor college student. After eating a couple of them, I decided that it would actually be better to die in a nuclear holocaust than to have to survive on those things. fast forward to 2025. I’ve tried a whole bunch of camping meals by many different manufacturers and they all have left me wanting for a variety of reasons. Either the food was bland or it was just disgusting or the packaging was bad. I heard that this brand was supposed to be really good. A friend of mine who is a nurse sent me a text message one night saying that she was hungry but the cafeteria was closed and nobody would deliver food that late. I sent her four of these meals, all different, and suggested that she keep one in her bag and one in her car for just such an occasion. She told me that they were delicious. I bought a bunch of them for myself and I have to agree. These meals are wayyyyy better than anything I’ve ever tried. They have great flavor, great texture and are substantial in size. The packaging is awesome. It is thick, heavy material with a zip lock that really holds in the moisture. This is important for two reasons. I add the hot water, seal the bag and let it sit for five minutes and then I turn it over upside down for another five minutes so that the remaining water drains down to the top of the bag and hydrates everything up there. I have yet to have a single drop leak out. Really a great value for the money at 10 bucks. I keep them around for those situations where I’m working at 2 o’clock in the morning and I am really hungry, but don’t want to take the time to make food. I can get a great meal in 10 minutes. ... show more

  • Very good tasting, quick breakfast!
Flavor Name: Granola with Milk & Blueberries
I really like the taste of this breakfast, and it could not be easier to prepare - just add cold water! I will always have some of these on-hand as a backup, in case for whatever reason I don't have other breakfast items in the house and can't get out.

  • Convenient but Soggy and Bland
Flavor Name: Scrambled Eggs with Uncured Bacon
I'm a huge fan of Mountain House meals and I'm usually quite pleased with the quality. However these scrambled eggs left me a little disappointed when compared to their other foods. Sure it's very convenient and is a great meal to have out in the middle of nowhere, but that's about all the good I can say about it. The main drawback for me is the excess water left over even after following their heating instructions to a tee, which leaves the eggs quite soggy and soupy if not fully drained. I drained mine through a fine mesh sieve thoroughly and they were still rather soggy. Texture was off. If you have nothing to strain them with, you'll have a hard time getting all the extra water out without losing some of the eggs. In Contrast, the "Breakfast Skillet" option with scrambled eggs, potatoes, onions and peppers turns out just fine with no excess water at the end. This makes me wonder if adding less water than the instructions call for could be an improvement for the scrambled eggs and bacon meal. Other than the soggy eggs and excess water left over, they're OK as a convenient hot meal when youre away from civilization. It beats a granola bar for sure. A little on the bland side though. The bacon adds some needed flavor but the pieces are very small and not substantial. I was expecting more bacon and larger pieces. To sum it up, this is not one of the better meals from Mountain House. They make much better options than this one, in my opinion. ... show more
