Value! ...Sorta.

TL;DR before I get started: Good phone, but competition at $400 makes it a 🤔 purchase. At $300 though? Banger. Do you like the blisteringly fast performance of flagship phones? Do you like the feeling of your hard earned money reflected by premium glass in your hands reminding you that you dropped 800 bones plus tax? Do you loathe headphone jacks and expandable storage because it's a "dying feature" holding back the future? Well too bad, schmuck! You get none of that. Instead, yous gettin' a midrange fighter that could be argued on price, but still performs admirably. Unless you got it on sale for $300 like I did, in which case you got a steal of a phone, even compared to others in the price range. If you spent $400, well....to be honest, I'd have gotten something else. But never mind that! You got what you got, and what you got is quite serviceable. Somewhat detailed breakdown across the board, and I'll start with the obvious. Mainly, Motorola's abysmal update department. Whereas other phones give you maybe some years of guaranteed software updates, Motorola kicks you out at 18 and says you get one care package. Now for someone like me who roots their phone day one on delivery, this is whatever. But for those who don't, this blows. It's almost like they WANT you to root the phone and void the warranty by not offering future updates. Why. Maybe you're wondering about the hardware and software. Well, minus the cameras being only okay, which does kinda bite, you're getting a quick Snapdragon 750G, which SEEMS to be on par with the 765 in the Samsung A71 5G. With the 6GB Ram variant (which is the only one you SHOULD be getting), you have enough room to enjoy a smooth, fast experience, which may or may not be what she said. However, with the 5000mAh battery, you'll be going without a charge for quite some time, which is what you WANT her to be saying. Idk, YMMV. And charging is pretty quick. Gaming is a breeze for most titles that I've played, so you shouldn't have too much trouble if you like to game on the go. And since Motorola is dedicated to the idea of a (mostly) pure Android experience, your OS is a bloat free experience, which is nice. Design wise? The waterproofing could be better. It's really raindrop repellent if anything, but I'll take it. The display? Well, it won't be breaking any records, especially since it isn't AMOLED, but it's bright enough. And tbh, this phone isn't small. Now, I have long, lanky hands, so this isn't much of a big issue for me, but for those with smaller hands, you'll probably be asking yourself why you bought this. The answer? MORE PIXELZ, BAYBEE. The plastic? Your mom's 93 Corolla has plastic all across the frame and that's been in more accidents than most of us have had during potty training and survived. Plus, who isn't buying a case with your phone these days? What are you, a daredevil? However, whoever put the speakers where they put them, I want to have a conversation. If we were to look at it on paper, you're only getting this for the battery life and the bloat free experience. For some of us who don't care about an amazing camera, that's more than enough. But when this phone is on sale, it's an amazing buy. It's quick, it's long lasting, it's a good enough addition to the Moto family. It's just not worth $400. But in a world where expandable SD storage, amazing battery life, and 5G capabilities are a plus on a phone that performs well, maybe it is worth the $400...? ... show more

By gesture driven, I mean there is no traditional "home" button. At first this threw me off because I have had either Samsung or Blackberry phones for my cell phone needs for years. I stopped buying carrier locked phones a long time ago and only buy unlocked. This being due to limitations preset on phones by carriers and bloatware as well as slow update rollouts. With no home button, it takes some limited getting used to, but there is a homescreen Moto app that trains the usage very well. Basic swipes for what you want to do, and most if not all are able to be done one handed. That seems to be the goal here. One neat feature that impresses those who have seen me do it, is the double chop gesture that turns the flashlight on or off. Battery life is the BEST I have had in any cell phone. I work overnight and sometimes use my phone to stream Youtube or Broadcastify as I work. Never in a 10 hour day, even streaming, has the battery been lower than 81%. That tells me that 2 days is an easy get for battery life, especially if not streaming etc. The camera is solid. It offers to switch to night mode or macro mode if the sensor sees that may be better, but lets you decide. I like that. As to data transfer from my old phone, I used the intuitive Moto app to do this. It came up on first start. It transferred all but a few apps, because they were unsupported old apps or based on Samsung specifically as my old phone was a Samsung 9+. I did have to sign back in to apps, but that is okay. That is with all such transfers, even within the same family of phones. It is slightly heavier than the Samsung 9+, but has a solid feel. One side note that is a con for me, but not a deal breaker. This phone does not do wireless charging. One must use a type C cord. Of course it comes with a cord, but it is a very common type right now if one wants to buy aftermarket ones that are longer. As I liked the stand charger I used with my old phone, I came up with a solution with an Amazon product. A stand https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B2WNNB2 This stand allows the cord to drop down from the phone and stand up without overbinding the cord. As my phone is my alarm clock, this is a great way I figured to do it. Do get a case for the phone. The one I got was suggested when I purchased it and is called Osophter for Moto G 5G. I like the case. Simple and buttons are not blocked or hindered. 5G. Yes, it will do 5G where it is available. I do get 5G in most places I go. Where there is not 5G it seamlessly switches to 4G or even 3G and in settings there is a option to allow 2G for apps to stay connected. Helpful for rural mapping. The android system is seamless as well. So, in closing, I do think this is a VERY good phone for anyone looking to buy unlocked and is not brand loyal to other makers. Motorola is a solid maker. Hello Moto. Remember that? Update: January 8, 2022 I have been using the phone extensively since I purchased it and can not be happier. It is a good as the day I bought it. Battery life is still stable and shows no depletion of charge from purchase. With the case I bought, it has protected it. I have dropped it more than one time on tile floor and no damage has resulted. It has gotten moist from rain. Nothing happened. 5G is still rolling out and choices that are not exploitive in price are limited. Enter this phone. Reasonable price, unlocked and simply works well. ... show more

Solved issues I was having with old phone, should suit my needs for a couple of years

I wish I had gotten this Motorola One 5G Ace sooner after my Redmi Note 7 started developing issues with receiving both texts and calls. But I hate replacing technology too soon and relegating still working gear to the landfills pitting earth's surface just so I can have the latest bleeding edge features. Trying to figure out what to buy proved frustrating as I was stymied by "analysis paralysis" and feared anything less than some flagship phone would leave me unsatisfied. So I finally stopped reading professional reviews and went with a peoples's choice type of phone. I am quite happy so far. I find the Motorola One 5G Ace solved the issues I was having with texts and calls as soon as I got my sim card and memory card installed and got it set up. Sometimes I think we lose site of the purpose of a phone, and the escalating rivalries to see which phones can have the most features, best cameras, best screens reminds me of the stereo receiver wars that lead to the development of giagantic beasts that had massive power supplies and amps and did everything under the sun without providing any real advantages over a solid midfi receiver. I digress. This phone suites my average needs fine. I do not use it to play games or watch movies. I use it to communicate, navigate, photograph, and record notes and info. It is a solid performer with a few nits to pick. The flashlight is a bit dimmer than I am used to with other phones, but being able to turn it off/on with two shakes is a good safety feature. The camera is decent and though some images are a bit washed out compared with those taken by flagship phones, I am fine with the quality. I actually use a camera for real photography anyway. The various Moto gestures intended as shortcuts mostly work for me, though a couple simply will not---but no big loss. The installed ringtones mostly suck, so I will eventually customize mine, and the lack of onboard recording is maybe my biggest gripe as I did not want to add a recording app. Battery life seems as advertised, the phone charges fairly quickly (but does not support wireless charging), calls sound clear, and fingerprint ID works about 95% of the time. I got mine new via the Amazon warehouse and paid less for the phone and a case than I expected when I began my quest for a new phone. I'm not into having to have the flagship models of phones, but I like getting a taste of the high-end. I think the Motorola One 5G Ace should meet my needs. ... show more

Solid budget phone

One of the first things I've noticed about this phone is the lackluster battery life. While it may claim to last two days I barely make it through a day. I've tried everything to prolong battery life but have failed miserably. With that out of the way for the price, this is a decent device with great specs. The camera and display are solid for a phone in this price range. I've been using it for about three weeks and have had zero issues aside from the battery. It's snappy, and responsive which is important for a device you plan on using every day. One thing I can't comment on is the 5g because Straight Talk doesn't offer it, but calls are loud and clear and while the speaker is a single it gets loud enough, but for movies or music you're going to want to use headphones with this. Will this beat higher end devices? Probably not but for what you're getting in this price point, it's well worth buying. This is my 2nd phone from these guys and I doubt I'll switch to another brand. The gestures for the camera and flashlight are still there and you get very little in the way of bloatware If you're looking for a phone that won't break the bank this is one you should conside even if the battery is a bit of a joke. Best Motorola phone yet!

This is my third Motorola phone. I bought this phone in November 2021 and I'm now just reviewing it for the first time in July 2022. That being said I can't find anything wrong with this phone. I got the new Android 11 update and it didn't glitch out or have any problems. The battery life is still excellent on it. It has all the functions of a high-end phone and is super fast but costs a fraction of the price. Motorola is just a good brand! I have a pretty good case on it, it's completely enclosed, and I've dropped it a few times with no problems. When you are on speakerphone it's loud enough that I can easily hear it. The fingerprint works excellent every time! I don't like the fingerprints that are on the screen cuz I never seem to work right. But this one is on the back and is it's his own little fingerprint scanner, works excellent every single time. 5G works well everywhere it's available. I'm on straight talk and when Verizon bought out straight talk they gave us an option of upgrading to the 5G chip for free. It works perfectly. The speakers are in good quality, music plays really well on it sounds excellent. I really have no complaints with this phone and I'm 8 months into using it and still love it! Excellent Midrange Phone!

I personally don't like to pay $700 - $1000 on a phone. It was time to upgrade to 5g and I looked at a number of phones in the $300 - $500 range and decided on the Motorola One 5g Ace (released January 2021). I've had the phone only for a few days, but I can already tell that I made a good decision. It arrived with Android 10 and will upgrade to 11 soon. Beyond that, honestly I don't know. The camera is very good and the OS is clean and unbloated. With a great processor and 6 Gb of RAM, everything just works like it should. Having 128 Gb of on board storage and the ability to use up to a 1Tb SD card, I don't have to worry about filling up my phone. Yes, the body is plastic... don't care; it looks great. I have to use a cable to charge it... no problem. It's got a huge battery, so the Ace doesn't need to charge very often. This phone also has an earphone jack, just in case you forget your bluetooth buds. So, I can't say that YOU will love it or hate it, but this phone is highly recommended by me if you're shopping in the midrange category. Check out the specs for yourself. ... show more

A Very Good Phone A Very Good Phone

My Samsung Galaxy Note 8 developed a bad charging port. The battery life was poor. I needed several things for a new phone. Price under $500. Good camera. Video stabilization. 5G. Headphone port. Expandable memory. I spent several weeks carefully researching phones. I would have purchased a Redit or Poco, phones not designed for the American market. But they cannot access all of our mobile frequencies and no warranty. A friend was remarking about his long battery life. Up to that point I had not even considered Motorola. But I was impressed with the specs. This is a very good phone. Not quite Terrific but borderline terrific for the price. No OLED display. No wireless charging (which I don't like anyway; too slow). Iffy night pics but the Samsung was bad at that too. But a snappy phone full of features for a reasonable price. Checks all my boxes. I like the Samsung phones but don't plan to spend a grand for a phone that will be out of date in a year or so anyway. When you buy your phone look for the must have features you want. Number one for me was battery life. I can go over a day without a charge. Happy with that. Not a gamer, so can't address that. I consider this a great value. Disappointed 😕

I've owned several Motorola phones in the past and have always been happy with them. This one however, not so much. The phone itself is OK, once I've worked around several issues I've had to deal with. My biggest gripe....the camera sucks. Even tho this phone has a 48 megapixel camera with so many "cool, advertised" features, the actual picture quality is grainy and blurry. I love the ease and convenience of taking pictures with my cell phone, but the amount of pictures I've taken with this phone are probably only a 1/4 compared to my last phone, simply because the pictures themselves are way too "sharp" that they look fake. The zoom feature is supposed to be amazing, but trust me, your zoom photos will look like a cartoon cel. 🤔 My last phone, a Moto Z3 Play took amazing photos. I had several people comment "your phone takes such good pictures," but not this one. Aside from the camera, I've had issues with receiving texts and messages. When I activated my unlocked Motorola with Straight Talk (and yes, I checked compatibility before I ordered - I have the right phone for Straight Talk) the phone could not make or receive texts. It took the Straight Talk representative over an hour to get the text feature working. However, after a couple weeks, the phone stopped receiving texts. I could send a text, but not receive. I didn't learn this for about the days, so for the next four days, between seven different phone calls to Straight Talk, spending a total of about 5 to 6 hours, pouring over technical issues on Motorola's website, I was able to convey to upper level tech support at Straight Talk, a series of things they had to do on their end to "fix" my texting problem. 😖 I've had many other "glitches" to overcome with this phone: shutting off data for the phone to work with some websites, not being able to connect to wifi at times, even tho it shows I'm connected, and other family members phones are connected and OK, still randomly not receiving messages via both text and Messenger, when the other party shows me they actually sent the message, having to power the phone off, then on, because it "locks up" and won't respond. I'm not a lover of flagship phones, but neither of my daughters have trouble with their phones (Apple for one, Samsung for the other) like my wife and I do with our Motorolas. So, because I'm cheap, I'll deal with this phone until I feel like I've gotten my $400 dollars out of it, then I'll start looking into Samsung models I might be able to justify buying, due to cost. Sorry Motorola, you failed on this phone. I think you rushed it to production before working out way too many technical problems. ... show more
