Description

328 pages, 186 black & white illustrations, size 5.5 x 8.5 inches. This is a faithful reproduction of the 1962 Floyd Clymer U.S.A. Edition of the same title. While the primary focus of this publication utilizes 1960's and prior motorcycles as examples, the reader is reminded that engineering theory and the laws of physics do not change and as such, the information it contains is still relevant today. Consequently, this publication is indispensible to those either contemplating modification to a current model or the construction of a 'special' for any form of motorcycle competition.Predominantly a technical work, it is written in terms easily understood by the layman. While it includes geometry and math formulae the reader will be aptly rewarded if they take a moment to comprehend the significance of the examples. Consequently, 'Motorcycle Engineering' is considered by many knowledgeable motorcycle enthusiasts to be the best book ever written on how to construct, improve, modify and fine tune a motorcycle from the 'ground up'.It is our pleasure to offer this reprint to all motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide. • A great book of motorcycle design
This book covers all aspects of motorcycle design in easy to understand terms.

  • The pure nuts and bolts of design, knowing that the author has been there, done that.
I own another book by PhIl Irving, purely on tuning for speed. This book is the one I should have read first and the detail is superb. It might be the re-print of an older book but the information is bang up to date. 'Love it as the technical aspect is spot on and it is a great read in its own right - if technical literature fascinates you as it does me. ... show more

  • Excellent read
I wish I had read this book 30 years ago. Full of good, practical knowledge regarding engine basics. Any vintage motorcyclist will love it. Modern enthusiasts or folks under 30 probably won't appreciate it. Written by an educated man in the King's English; a real treat and a refreshing change up from today's sloppy common language. ... show more

  • historic yet still relevant
Haven't got the book handy as I write this but I recall that the author, Irving, had the nickname "slide rule". Does any living person know what that means? It means a hands on, intimate relationship with mathematics. Well there's a lot of geometry and other math in the book, but I think an enthusiast will take a moment to understand, and be rewarded for the effort. Many design principles for engine, frame, suspension, etc are still valid today. It's odd to see current technology experimented with in the 1920s, 1940s, etc. It's a revelation to see WHY certain features exist. The motorcycle is an elegant machine partly because there is very little compromise for fashion. Every part, ideally, serves a practical function. Every part contributes to performance and safety. Irving brings these facts home with clear text, profuse illustrations and vast personal experience in working motorcycle design. Old motorcycles are lots of fun to look at, to ride, and to examine for their unique features. Modern sport bikes continue the engineering push with truly incredible materials and design features at very competitive prices. When you read this book, you will understand just how refined modern bikes can be. You will have a greater appreciation of your own motorcycle. ... show more

  • summary book of engineering topic
historically an important book and quite strong in its simple and direct use of language and concepts. Read mostly for its clear description of engine balancing.
