These are great, my new serving dishes. They are broad enough on bottom to hold multiple items meat, potato, veg) or a hearty bowl of soup or spaghetti, but not too deep. I was a little surprised by their size when they first came. (You know how that is - you look at pictures and "imagine" something.) Their diameter is less than a dinner plate. We are loving them though! There is room for our salad and our main course. The "lip" is wide enough to hold bread, or your knife as you eat. For cutting salad or meat, there is enough room - rather than those little salad bowls that make it a struggle. They look fabulous - nicely made, good weight. We almost never use a regular plate now!
