  • This high speed, low torque 'Drill Press' is very limited in what it can do.
This drill press, per the product dimension description, is quite small. Parts of it had to be assembled. I installed a 1/8 inch drill bit as a test size because that is the size I most commonly use. I removed the upper black plastic cover to see how the mechanism was built. I was surprised to see only a clear plastic round 'belt' mounted on the two pulleys. I replaced the upper guard cover, plugged the drill in, and put on protective eyewear and gloves. Since the vertical drill movement has roughly a 1 inch up/down travel limitation, I had to careful place the tip of the drill bit just above the 3/4 inch piece of mahogany wood. I checked the vertical travel to make sure the drill bit would go all the way through the piece of wood. I turned the drill motor to the 'ON' position and the speed to the lowest on the selector, and waited a few seconds to see how it operated. I actually heard the motor slowly increase in RPM until it finally settled to a mid-pitched hum. I then proceeded to 'press' the drill bit section into the mahogany piece at a downward rate I normally use. As soon as I made contact with the wood and lowered the bit at my normal rate, the drill motor began to slow down drastically. I found that the only way to keep the bit rotation from dropping too low is to take small vertical 'bites' out of the wood and back the drill bit off between each progressive vertical drill 'bite'. Since the drill press doesn't take up much room when not in use, I will probably use it whenever I need perfect, small, vertical holes in wood. I will eventually try using this drill press on aluminum and steel when I can find some thick stock. I cautiously recommend this little high speed & low torque drill press only if you have a need to drill small vertical holes in soft materials. ... show more
