I received this product and immediately tried it as a futon. Despite its thin appearance, the balance between firmness and softness was just right, and I didn't feel any strain on my body while sleeping. When actually sleeping, I laid it on top of a carpet. Whether laid directly on the floor like in Japan or used with a bed frame, it seems comfortable to sleep on either way. The size is Twin (100cm x 200cm), so it's a perfect size for one adult and one child to sleep on. My child also liked this new, fluffy futon. This futon is made in Japan, with very beautiful stitching and no fraying or damage. However, since it cannot be washed or dried, I plan to use a waterproof bed cover to prevent it from getting dirty.

This is a follow up rating. Have now used several times as topper for air mattress and fold out bed. Very comfortable. Needs to be allowed to air out after each use which is normal for a futon. Nice that it is made in Japan.

The mattress needs few days to decompress. It smells funny but smell goes away. My first thought after using it was "it is to thin". I am 170cm tall and skinny and I am used to sleep on very hard mattresses, but mattresses are much thicker than this futon. Maybe a little bit of fat would be helpful. Also, I am not using any mat underneath. I believe any camping/gym mat will solve this problem. Nevertheless I have kept using it and now I do not notice this as much as at the beginning. I am happy with its thickness, I can roll it and put duvet on it and it doesn't pile into 2m tall tower. I recommend buying cover as well. I you are heavy I would suggest to look for something thicker, as it might be too hard for you.

This shikibuton is so comfortable to sleep on. It's lightweight and easy to fold up and put away. I don't ever foresee myself sleeping on a traditional bed again.

Okay so I wrote a long review at first but im just gonna say the "mattress" does not have enough foam/ stuffing. The thing is barely 1& 1/2" thick after letting it air/fluff out over 5 days, so for 200$ I bought a bad mattress topper, it is very expensive to return and YOU have to pay for their shoddy craftsmanship. The product isn't even truly quilted it just looks like it,the foam move around and bunches up. The foam WILL be bunched due to it not being quilted. Honestly save yourself 190$ and buy a blanket fold it up twice and voila you have this "mattress"
