These radios work perfectly in the rural setting where they are used. Set up was easy and instructions were clear. Range is approximately 1.5-2 miles line of sight max. They are used on a rural property usually around 300 yards and are perfectly clear. Battery life is good, about 2 days with intermittent use. The one con and the reason for 4 stars is the low battery warning. The battery indicator goes from 3 bars (full) to low warning and shut off while skipping the two and one bar setting in about an hour. If you leave the radio on with it showing 3 bars on the second day of use you will find it shut off later with little indication of low battery. I decided to charge it every other day to avoid this as opposed to watching the battery indicator and this works well enough for now. All in all, a pretty good and inexpensive option if your intended use will allow for unexpected shut off due to low battery with essentially no warning. ... show more

My husband and I needed something that would help us to communicate while he was hunting and I remained at "base camp", mainly so he could let me know if he needed help dragging out a buck. (We speak from past experience when he had to drag one out alone after dark.) I know that the maximum range is based on perfect conditions with no obstructions, so wasn't expecting much as we would be in the mountains with trees and granite obstacles. We found from testing that while our voices couldn't be heard clearly beyond about a mile, the beep from pressing the talk buttons COULD be heard from a greater distance. From that we established a communication system: one beep to check, two beeps back to respond all okay. Three beeps, followed by three additional beeps meant a problem and to come right away. I was able to keep in contact with my husband all day this way, one beep from me, and two beeps back from him, meant he was safe somewhere until he was in range again to talk to me. When it got dark, and I got worried, this system let me know all was well. Testing at home riding my horse we had a range of about 1 1/4 miles of clear talk reception before things got garbled. This was in trees and several hills in between us. Plusses for me: - Runs on rechargeable batteries that can be charged via USB from portable power unit or in the car, or dock at home, but can also run on three AA batteries. - The case is really nice, with perfect cutouts in the foam for each piece. No joggling or banging equipment together as it rides safely in this case. - Distance is better than we thought it would be with obstructions. - Nice clip keeps unit attached to backpack or belt. - I like the camo. What can I say? Blends in with my hunting wear. - Battery life seems really good! Didn't even touch it with all the playing around we did with them. - Great value...the price of this set was better than buying the walkie talkies alone Negatives: - Nothing serious. They got scratched up pretty quickly in brush, but that's to be expected. - I'll update further as we continue using them if problems arise. All in all, very happy with this purchase, and the peace of mind it affords me. ... show more
