I purchased Topsung walkie-talkies (not the ones from this listing) in 2021, to use on a road trip for a family wedding. I've used walkie-talkies before on road trips, so I knew how convenient, and fun they can be! However, the Topsung were TERRIBLE! They were all static and you couldn't hear a word anyone was saying! Last month, we made a big move from CT to TN. I ordered three of these Midland walkie-talkies two days before we left on our move. I got them the next day and I put them on their chargers overnight. We had two cars and a VERY large moving truck... driving 1012 miles with 5 people and two senior kitties! We tried them out before we left. They seemed pretty good, so off we went! One of the people in our caravan didn't think we needed walkie-talkies. She said, "We have cell phones, we don't need those!". By the time we got to our first fuel stop, she apologized and said, "I get it now!". They made for a much better trip! They allowed all of us to talk to each other with the click of a button. Can't do that with cell phones. Any last-minute pit stops are much tougher when you have to call multiple vehicles on your phone before you miss the exit. A walkie-talkie gets it done in two seconds! These Midland walkie-talkies were awesome! We had no static what-so-ever and you could hear everyone clearly. We used them to tell stories and jokes... we laughed and even cried a little. Definitely helped to pass the time and keep us awake on our overnight 17-hour trip! The only thing I wish we had done was bring batteries with us. We were less than 2 hours from our new house when the internal batteries started dying. Ugh, well we weren't going to stop for batteries being that close to home! We have another family wedding this summer... it's only 6 hours away, but we'll bring the batteries, just in case!

Backstory: I decided to purchase this set of radios specifically for communication between the bridal for a wedding in the US while in a household, chase vehicle to limo on the highway, and indoor reception venue to the bridal house (separate structure approx. 500 ft away). There was about 3 days of research and searching before deciding on this set of radios. I initially was considering an extremely cheaper and sophisticated radio similar to the $500+ radios I use for work made by our best friends overseas or "BaoFeng 888s". However the clones made by our friends are NOT LEGAL for what I wanted. Plain and simple "out of the box" they are NOT currently approved by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) for GMRS, CB or FRS but reprogramming them "could" be used for GMRS, FRS, CB or HAM but still in a gray area of FCC approval. Far too messy and complicated process for an event that is already messy and complicated enough. In this case simple is best. Review: Right "out of the box" this radio is ready and legal to use (after 12 hours to full charge) without a license on FRS only channels 8-14 and has 121 privacy codes (38 CTCSS, 83 DCS). All channels other than 8-14 of the 36 total require a GMRS license. - Solid build: Extremely lightweight. Decent belt clip. Nonadjustable orangeish back-lit screen (Push To Talk, PTT does not activate back light). Good ergonomics, rubberized PTT and headset cover. PTT button does not extrude from housing much thus low risk of bumping PTT button. -Usage life: comes with rechargeable battery and base. Also accepts 3 AAA. I had the radio on from 1400-2200 and on PTT FRS (low power only), medium radio traffic and they didn't die. I can't give an accurate rechargeable battery life usage, but backup AAAs are there, so not worried. - Mic and Speaker: at optimal conditions this little radio can be crystal clear. Squelch works, no issues. VOX (just talk, no push button) feature is nice and adjustable. Didn't need for event, but handy when desired. -Headset option: I did purchase the Midland APVH-3 headset, worked without issue. Decent cord length, solid PPT and VOX speaker box. Can charge from MIC port. CAUTION: speaker/mic pin set differ from other main brands, insure compatibility when purchasing. -Range: Meets maximum standards, FRS .5 miles - 2 miles, conditions dependent. After enough research to get a doctorate on walkie talkies, these radios just work. FRS is limited to .5 watt (1/2 watt or 500 milliwatt) by the FCC, potentially the MAX range is approx 2 miles conditions dependent. More stuff in between the radios = less range. GMRS has further ranges operating at 5 watt but requires a license (good for 5 years and immediate family members). Overall: Nothing about the radios are dissatisfying or disappointing, unfortunately they are 3x the price of the clones, but worry free. Working with .5 watt is limiting but they just simply work and do what I needed. I may upgrade to using GMRS one day and is nice to have that option. I wanted something LEGAL and just works. The main brand headset also unfortunately are pricier than generic brands and other radio brands. I like them, they work.

Really fun! Real Walkie Talkies! Not a cheap toy that will easily break or sound all static-y. As good as a cell phone for kids w/o the monthly bill. This set reaches really far. Further than I'll let my seven year old go out on her own. My teens tested it and it still provided connection more than 10 miles away. Definitely a good buy. No more calling out the door when its time to come in from the playground. yay! IMPORTANT UPDATE [01/02/14] no vibrating feature but it does have silent mode to disable all roger beeps and ring tones, an external jack for headsets/other accessories, the RX icon appears when receiving but the screen doesn't light up and volume control at it's lowest is still audible within a 30x30 ft. room. also, it seems that awesome range I noted in my earlier review only applies to open, unobstructed rural areas with optimum performance conditions being near water. on our first range test my kids took one straight up the mountain from our place, there's a river that runs from up there past our home to a lake about a mile away so the reception was great then. last evening i tested it again when I went to the local shopping center just a few blocks away. TX/RX was cut off as soon as I entered the parking lot surrounded by several low-rise buildings. however, I don't know if the break was caused by interference due to all the sky traffic over our area on new years eve or if changing frequencies would have helped us pick up the signal. so far we've only tried 2 channels [channel 1 for the first test, before I read the pamphlet stating "you must be licensed by the FCC prior to operating on channels 1-7 and 15-22 or serious penalties may result", and channel 9 for the shopping center test] Another thing in the pamphlet worth mentioning is that although the radio complies w/national and international radiation protection standards, it generates measurable RF energy exposure when transmitting and it's important to limit exposure to the electromagnetic energy by transmitting no more than 50% of the time (how much time? it doesn't say) so if you're buying for kids make sure they're mature enough to understand and use responsibly. my 7 yr. old gets it now but at first she just wanted to press and babble on and on about anything and nothing at all, even just to giggle, so I explained about radiation and the consequences of too much exposure and she's not too keen on overuse anymore. did that lesson ruin the fun for her? maybe a little but all in all our family is still happy with the purchase. hope this info helps you with your buying decisions. have a happy new year and make it count. UPDATE: 11/11/14 From 3 stars to 1 Just came back from my 14 day trip with these radios and they are garbage. I wished I had saved the packaging so I could return them. Not only the radios doesn't have a good range as I pointed out earlier but the batteries got depleted and do not hold charge any longer. I have to now use three AA batteries in each radio....10 days and they are still holding charge. So in combination of limited range even in fairly open space (range around .3 nautical miles), battery issues (after following charge instructions) and radios resetting all custom settings to default (has happened 3 times now in less than a month)....I'd say these are garbage even for lesser price and you should stay away. First of all 36-Channel is just a marketing ploy, I wished I had known before buying. For all the amateurs out there like myself who are new to two way radios, you cannot use channels 1-7 and 15-22 without getting a FCC license. The license cost could vary but it is in the $70-$100 range for 5 years. The channels 8-14 are low frequency as stated on the paper and I am not yet going to comment on it because I haven't had the chance to test it. The only channels I have tested so far are 23-36 and they are garbage. The range would be slightly higher in comparison to the radios you would buy your kids for $9.99. To be specif the range i got was .368 nautical miles. Obviously i didn't test it standing on a mountain with a valley in between. One radio was held by my wife in the kitchen our house and another radio was with me in the car. There were exactly 5 house in between us (line of sight) and spaced apart in the .368 nautical mile range and no other structures. So I am sure the radios would work fine in a wooded area or on a filed and would give a higher range. However, the reason for my purchase was to use the radios in a resort which has Villa's and hotel building and range of at-least 1.5KM. So far it has been a complete fail on channels 23-36. I am going to try the free low frequency channels soon (8-14) and will update/or keep the review same accordingly. Also in the short time I have had the radios, one of the radio forget the settings and cleared my preferences including channel just by turning it on.

I switched from Motorola to Midland and have not regretted that decision. These are very compact, but the smaller size has not compromised the functions other than lacking vibrate, which for me is not an issue. Sensitive Receiver: I have many radios to compare these to, and surprisingly even with the more stubby antenna, they seem to receive better than my other radios with longer antennas. I have a local GMRS repeater to listen and compare this with. I'm also licensed in GMRS and Ham Radio. Battery Recommendation: The rechargeable pack that comes with these has very little capacity. But one great feature of this particular design vs other Midlands is the ability to charge your own Energizer rechargeables inside the radio with the desktop charger. You'll get 3 times the use with your own batteries, but don't expect much more than a day of use before recharging. The battery meter is only accurate while transmitting, hence it may die unexpectedly when it was just showing a full bar. Actual Use: Don't expect any brand of FRS radios to be very effective beyond a half mile. Consider these to be 'site' radios, not cell phones. Be sure to discover their range limit in your area before you trust the safety of a child with one. Even classifying them as a 'neighborhood' radio is a stretch, depending on your terrain. Hills and trees decrease range more than anything else. Easy to Carry: These have excellent belt clips, but I always carry them on my pocket, not my belt. The smaller speaker actually sounds louder than the larger Midland GXT 760 radios I own. The LXT 600 is considerably lighter weight than the GXT, but if you want or need more battery life, go with the GXT models using AA batteries rather than the AAA of the LXT. You may forget you're carrying the LXT. I have larger professional radios that are bulky and heavy making them uncomfortable to carry all day in years past. Overall Opinion: I actually spent $135 recently on ONE FRS/GMRS radio from Amazon- (Blackbird Products RR5000 Pro Grade 15-Channel GMRS Radio) and in my opinion, the LXT600 out performs this expensive radio in many ways! Would like to see Midland add repeater capability to their lineup, and would make for a more expensive radio of course.

the radio's work great, but the battery charging process is not good. The instructions just say to charge for 12 hours and then remove the radios from the charging station. The charger does NOT turn off when the batteries have reached full charge. Not a good feature at all.
