  • Worked great for our cross country trip!
Style: 3 Pack - Yellow/Black
I purchased Topsung walkie-talkies (not the ones from this listing) in 2021, to use on a road trip for a family wedding. I've used walkie-talkies before on road trips, so I knew how convenient, and fun they can be! However, the Topsung were TERRIBLE! They were all static and you couldn't hear a word anyone was saying! Last month, we made a big move from CT to TN. I ordered three of these Midland walkie-talkies two days before we left on our move. I got them the next day and I put them on their chargers overnight. We had two cars and a VERY large moving truck... driving 1012 miles with 5 people and two senior kitties! We tried them out before we left. They seemed pretty good, so off we went! One of the people in our caravan didn't think we needed walkie-talkies. She said, "We have cell phones, we don't need those!". By the time we got to our first fuel stop, she apologized and said, "I get it now!". They made for a much better trip! They allowed all of us to talk to each other with the click of a button. Can't do that with cell phones. Any last-minute pit stops are much tougher when you have to call multiple vehicles on your phone before you miss the exit. A walkie-talkie gets it done in two seconds! These Midland walkie-talkies were awesome! We had no static what-so-ever and you could hear everyone clearly. We used them to tell stories and jokes... we laughed and even cried a little. Definitely helped to pass the time and keep us awake on our overnight 17-hour trip! The only thing I wish we had done was bring batteries with us. We were less than 2 hours from our new house when the internal batteries started dying. Ugh, well we weren't going to stop for batteries being that close to home! We have another family wedding this summer... it's only 6 hours away, but we'll bring the batteries, just in case! ... show more

  • Decent Range, More Rugged Than Expected and Reliable
Style: Pair Pack
I have purchased three sets of these radios; buying 4 per year starting 7 years ago. I use these for long distance bicycle riders to communicate with each other and support vehicles. I keep them in a padded Pelican case and have learned to toss the rechargeable batteries and chargers and use Duracell or Energizer batteries. My oldest units are still working well, even the one that fell on the bike path and was run over before we recovered it. You cannot read the information window but it still does its job. They have gotten soaked in the rain and dragged through the mud. They are cost effective so I buy them when they are on sale. The range is standard for the FRS/GMRS portable radios. I use more powerful mobiles in the support trucks so they can hear drivers before we can hear them. When I start hearing the riders I know they are around a mile away. Of course that will vary based on terrain, weather and foliage conditions. On the Outer Banks of North Carolina the range was around two miles. In the Rockies and the Sierra Nevadas it’s around a half mile. I just bought 2 more because my group is growing. ... show more

  • Good radios, crappy charger
Style: Pair Pack
The radios themselves are good. Easy enough to use, and having a weather radio built in is nice. The charger fits two radios (which is nice), but as best as I can tell it’s just a simple trickle charger. I left the radios on the charger for 24 hours and the “charge” LEDs never turned off, so you get no feedback on when the battery is charged. Not a big deal, just low budget. If you are new to the market, note that all FRS radios are limited by FCC regulation on output power, to no more than 2 Watts effective radiated power (and half a Watt on some channels), which takes into account antenna efficiency. So products from any manufacturer likely put out the exact same power, and therefore (because antenna gain is included in the measurement) have the same range. Manufacturers make increasingly brazen boasts about maximum range, but a radio advertising a greater range just has a gutsier marketing department. Also, there are only 22 FRS channels. Channels 23-36 on these are some of the existing 22 channels with some specific tone preselected. You’re not actually getting more channels. Likewise, in the US, there are only 7 NOAA Weather Radio channels (the same frequencies are used in Canada). 8-10 are a subset of those used by Canada’s Continuous Marine Broadcast service and do not exist in the US. The radios seem to work great. Just be careful about trying to compare products on claimed range/distance (they’re all about the same), number of FRS channels (there are only 22), or number of weather channels (there are 7; 10-channel ones include 3 of the 5 Canadian marine channels). ... show more
