Features

  • Adjustable Gain from 1975dB this mic preamp provides powerful gain to overcome the limited preamp boost found in many audio interfaces and mixers. It enhances the clarity and fullness of high-impedance dynamic microphones such as SM58, SM7B, MV7 and brings out details. For condenser mics, use in a quiet studio or pair with our RO-05 Noise Eliminator to reduce ambient noise.
  • This mic preamp converts mic-level signals to line-level with balanced XLR and 1/4" TRS outputs, ideal for recording through USB audio interfaces and mixers. Not compatible with mobile live-streaming audio interface or speakers without line inputs. Wireless microphones are also unsupported, as their inherent noise would be amplified.
  • Turn down the gain on your audio interface or mixer and rely solely on the RO-03 mic preamp. With up to 75dB of gain, it provides more than enough amplification while preventing unwanted noise from double boosting. It can fully replace the gain function of your interface or mixer.
  • While the mic preamp delivers up to 75dB of clean gain, you should adjust the level based on your setup, mic distance, and recording environment. The goal is to boost your signal while keeping background noise low. Monitor the input in your DAW or watch the Clip light on your audio interface, and keep the level below -12dB for the best sound quality without distortion or clipping.
  • This mic preamp also accepts guitar or other instrument signals through its 1/4" input and amplifies them to line level, allowing it to work as an adjustable-gain DI box. Note: when connecting to a guitar amp, be sure to use the Line input only. If the amp has no line input, it cannot be used, otherwise unwanted noise will occur. For connection, use an XLR to TS or TRS to TS cable from the preamp to your amp.
  • If your recording space isnt acoustically treated and youre worried about background noise being amplified, pair the RO-03 mic preamp with our RO-05 Analog Noise Eliminator to achieve a clean, clear sound.

  • Nice and quiet.
Nice and quiet. I had been using a Tascam recorder as a preamp, but had a little noise on a 50 ft. XLR run to a weatherproof box under my front deck, where I keep the dynamic mic. Decided to try this preamp, and the amplification factor is about the same, but the noise floor has dropped about 6 dB. I was pleased that the box is STEEL, because it allowed me to mount it under a shelf with magnets. de KØUNX, Jim in Jefferson County, Colorado. ... show more

  • it's a solid microphone amp
I bought this To amplify my Sennheiser Microphones which I use with Dragon NaturallySpeaking for speech recognition. It is very solidly built and provides clean amplification. I changed out the power supply for third-party power supplies that I use with all of my audio equipment to make sure that there's no noise. The sound is very clear which is necessary for speech recognition. However, it does not provide any additional warmth like the ART preamps that I use for voice recording but it's about one third the price of those units. while the sound is a little dry, it doesn't sound unnatural on my zoom calls. I can't comment on singing are instrumental application since I don't do that. ... show more

  • Nice little single channel preamp with a lot of gain, useful for low-output dynamic/ribbon mics
I was interested in trying this because it offers a lot of clean gain (75 dB) for the price, which I thought might be useful for low-output ribbon & dynamic mics. I did a little a/b test comparing the Rodyweil to the built-in preamps of a Yamaha mixer -- the Rodyweil definitely has a LOT more clean gain, which is nice and useful. I tried it with an SM57 and an sE ribbon microphone and it's loud enough for both, without needing something like a cloudlifter. I also tried the line input, and also a condenser mic with the phantom power button engaged, and both worked fine. My only complaints are (like others mentioned) the unbalanced mini jack outputs, which are a pain -- 1/4" would be a lot more useful. Also, when I tried turning the gain knob up and down, most of the action seems to happen towards the very end of the control's travel -- it's fairly quiet quiet quiet and then at the end gets REALLY LOUD, rather than a smooth transition. Also: the little spec sheet that comes in the box describes this as a "2-channel" preamp, which AFAIK usually means a stereo unit, or something with two separate inputs & outputs. This is a mono, single-channel preamp. It does have separate XLR and 1/4" inputs, and you can run a mic and a line signal through both inputs at the same time, but you've got just the one output. For the price, though, I think it's pretty good, and I'm planning on using it on various recording projects. ... show more

  • Great product - OUTSTANDING customer service!
My initial impression was that the unit was well made. It's heavy, in a sturdy metal enclosure, and the switches and ports seem to be of high quality. I am using it in conjunction with a Fostex cassette 4-track, and I had some technical hook-up questions. My email was answered within a few hours, and the customer service rep was incredibly helpful. We exchanged a few emails until an optimum solution was suggested. The preamp works perfectly, and in fact even makes a very low end mic work/sound great. I am 100% satisfied with my purchase and would happily buy more products from this manufacturer. ... show more

  • Lots of noise.
Sounded like it was picking up radio waves. Tried new cables, and different plugs, but nothing helped.

  • So clean and tight feedback!! Love it!!!
I had to dig through a lot of junk in my shed to find my dusty ol' mic. It has a filter to keep popping and other noises you don't really want down to a minimum. I hooked up my amp to this preamplifier and voila! Gain was the first thing I noticed. No feedback, but significantly louder mic output. I love that, I usually have issues with feedback and organizing distances of my equipment to deter that. My voice came through cleaner than I had imagined. This preamp is compact as well, I could fit it in my pocket, but not with jeans on. Overall, this preamp is very nice and beneficial in many applications of use, I highly recommend getting one! ... show more

  • Very Noisy Preamp and Not Useable for Recording
I was looking forward to using this unit as I've only read good reviews about it. The unit itself appear to be well-built, with smooth operating buttons and knob. Then I tried to use it... First thing I noticed is that as soon as I plugged in an XLR cable from my Audio Interface to the output of the Rodyweil booster, a very loud and constant hiss was being pumped into the interface. This was even before turned the unit on. I discovered that this hiss is produced whenever phantom power is being sent from the interface. Ok I just need to remember to keep the phantom power off to the unit. Then I turned the unit on, and immediately there was hiss again... this time much quieter than with the unit off and phantom power applied, but still quite significant. I then plugged in my Shure SM7B, and I could clearly hear the mic, yet the background hiss remained, even at its lowest gain setting. I made sure it wasn't my cable or interface, by bypassing the Rodyweil booster and plugging the mic directly into the interface. The hiss is completely gone. I then tried to use the booster again and make sure all the connections were firmly plugged in, and they were. Listening carefully to the background noise, I could not only hear the hissing but other high-pitched sounds that swept from lower frequecies to higher inadible frequencies. Additionally, I noted that turning the gain control knob introduced additional static noises at times. Perhaps my unit was just defective, but it is not useable at all with the very high noise floor and strange high-pitched sweeping sounds being introduced to the mic input. I also noted that in the Q&A section, the first thing mentioned in the included sheet pictured, is a question about noise. They seem to lay blame on the environment, as if its normal with a mic booster. This is not normal. I'm returning this unit and getting a different booster. ... show more
