  • This delicious book is a visual and intellectual feast!
This great new book is packed with photos of ingenious dwellings - and good news! It's NOT AT ALL like an overly perfect Instagram feed of black and white sterile luxury tiny house interiors! And thank goodness! The homes Deek has chosen to include in this book are personal, creative, colorful, and whimsical. They are full of artsy touches and they look like interesting people actually live in them. It's refreshing to see spaces that aren't loaded with cheap imported mass market decor but instead are boasting quirky and approachable original artwork. Deek highlights what each designer/builder did that was particularly interesting, and there are "in retrospect" comments from the home owners on things they would change if they had it to do again. I love it that many of the ideas are very creative, inexpensive, and there is a theme of upcycling and recycling that is refreshing. If you're looking for floor plans for a Micro McMansion that has all the bells and whistles, this is not it, LOL! Andrew Odom's contribution that tiny house living isn't for everyone is a fantastic counter point to all the photos of cozy and charming spaces. Michelle Boyle's thoughts on cooking in a tiny house are very helpful to anyone who loves to cook but still likes the idea of living tiny. I tend to think that Minimalism is still an over emphasis on stuff - and a very reasonable reaction to the materialism that is so much a part of modern culture - but Ryan Nicodemus shares a nuanced view of minimalism that is challenging and thought provoking. This delicious ADD book is a visual and intellectual feast! ... show more

  • Eye-opening.
Either you are interested in building a tiny house or you have simply curiosity "Micro Living" is, in both cases, an amazing work. It has everything: photos, descriptions, blueprints, recommendations, budgets (when available) and even more. Books of this type use to end being just catalogues; not here: we have the experience of the owners to explain if their tiny houses work and accordingly what it could improve even more the quality of life. In the end there is even instructions to build a basic module and equivalences in metric system... I tried to find something lacking and I couldn't. It has everything, I think I even saw a cat xp!!! I only have made a tiny aparment before (not the same, of course). I'd loved to have this book before as it is inspiring. Not only great solutions but lovely places that you can call "home." I loved all the tiny houses but especially "The Kasita" and "The Willow Tree House," a way to use bottles as bricks :O and the commentaries of the owners using their tiny houses. I really learned a lot and you can too getting this book. ... show more

  • Fun tiny house book
My entire family is obsessed with tiny houses. We’ve even viewed one that was on tour near us and imagine what it might be like for our family of 6 (myself, my husband and our 4 kids) to live in a tiny house. I liked this book because it showed tips and tricks to how to make tiny living possible, but gave me ideas to use in our house. I think this was a fun and current book. ... show more

  • Pictures, stories, floor plans...this has it all.
A great book about tiny houses needs a lot of pictures. This book delivers on that and doesn't stop there. It's divided into three main sections that group the tiny houses by size categories. There is really something for everyone here and each house is not only depicted via a number of great images, but Deek offers additional details and shows off floor plans of the various tinies. Since tiny houses are often deeply personal creations, Deek showcases the people behind these small structures. I like that since tiny houses are all about the folks that build them or live in them and the choices/tradeoffs they have made in their spaces. In the event that this book kickstarts your own tiny house ambitions, there is a set of plans included to get you started down that path. That's a nice way to round out a rather comprehensive collection of sub 400 square foot tiny structures. Micro Living will give you ideas and you'll pick up on things that you like that others have done. In that way it's a great resource for coming up with your own back of the envelope designs for tiny living. Don't buy it if you think that tiny houses are stupid and a fad that is about to come to an abrupt end. Assuming you don't fall into that category, pop this into your cart. You won't be disappointed. ... show more

  • Well Written Book that's a blast to read with great artwork that keeps you entertained!
This book has been a great follow up to other books from Derek, the artwork is so great and fun to see. I especially love all the floor plans and Derek's take on each house and design. This book will still be a great resource for many years to come and I highly recommend picking up a copy, you can tell the author really cares about what he puts his name on. Can wait to see what he has in store next! ... show more

  • Pictures, Plans, and Helpful Commentary
If you're looking for a book with a lot of great pictures to inspire your home-building imagination, plus layout diagrams, helpful comments from the author and builders (including build cost and things they'd do differently), as well as a plan to build one of the author's basic tiny house designs, then this is exactly what you need. I mostly bought it for the pictures, but I found the commentary and essays to also be informative and useful. ... show more

  • Idea Picture Book with Floor Plans - Not Instructional
I've seen most (not all) of the tiny homes shown in the book on various YouTube videos. This is not an instructional book. It is an idea picture book. You will need to have basic building skills. The main positive thing for me was floor plan ideas. Pro Tip - I've helped build Tiny Homes and if at all possible, go with a 10' wide design for more floor plan options. ... show more

  • Fun! Humorous! Informative!
I have been buying and reading architecture books and shelter magazines since before the internet. This book by Derek Diedreckson, ranks with the best, each house featured has great photos, drawings, and anecdotes, but the secret the sauce is that Deek, has been in every house and we get to see and learn about them through his eyes. ... show more
