Description

First published in 1881, this classic volume presents dozens of practical examples of barns and outbuildings—including floor plans and building instructions—and contains two hundred and fifty-seven engravings, woodcuts, and line drawings illustrating historical and practical designs. Featured designs include cattle barns, pigpens, pigeon houses, self-feeding corncribs, self-closing doors, icehouses, springhouses, granaries, horse barns, dog houses, and much more. Halsted also provides suggestions on the placement of outbuildings and on choosing the cor-rect materials for foundations, walls, and roofs. This new release of Barns and Outbuildings—a tribute to the beauty of the farm and the ingenuity of the farmer—will engage new audiences, from builders and organic gardeners to history buffs and craft lovers. • excellent survey!
Format: Paperback
excellent classic survey of facility types

  • Interesting trip back in time
Format: Kindle
You don't have to read much to find that if you were primarily interested in using modern techniques, materials, and tools, this is not the book for you. It is interesting to read about some old-fashioned approaches and challenges of years ago. Maybe a survivalist would enjoy and want this approach to use the simple ways. The details to actually build the structures is somewhat lacking and varying, but it does give you a starting point. ... show more

  • Not bad; Not great
Format: Kindle
This book presents a fairly clinical look at select barns and outbuildings. It has some illustrations. I enjoyed getting a look at the described buildings, but certainly did not get the impression I could use this book if I were interested in building the barns and outbuildings described.

  • Title Extremely Misleading!!
Format: Paperback
This is NOT a book on "How to Construct" anything! It is intersting to see all the different styles of barns and outbuildings from the past, but there is nothing about how to construct one single structure. There are no detailed plans, no specific measurements, no materials lists, nothing! If you are interested in learning about the simple look and feel of these types of buildings this book is perfect, but if you want to actually build something look elsewhere. ... show more

  • Pretty good !
Format: Kindle
I was looking for a basic floor to roof building standards and ideas old and new. This book does have that. Mostly the book is for farm buildings and such. Great ideas for cattle, fowl and swine . Hope you like this book!
