  • Fascinating and an Easy Read
This book really opened my mind to many possibilities, from simple to complex, cabins. Also, all the considerations one should regard when planning a cabin: the pitfalls of the cabin's location on a plot as it pertains to weather and drainage, the question of is the solitude of a cabin right for you or do you need more social contact than you know, health code limitations, looking into the facts of the land surrounding your plot and foreseeing logging operations that would decimate your beautiful view and seclusion, security of a cabin, etc. Brilliant book by a brilliant author. Also funny and down-to-earth. ... show more

  • Very Informative, just nothing showing or any descriptions about steps to build yourself.
Good book, very informing about log cabins, however there is nothing talking or showing you anything about notching or any of the steps that you need to do from chopping the trees down to de-barking or anything if you do it yourself. Great book though, very informative.

  • So glad this was my first book to read
I would recommend this book to anyone who has been contemplating renting or building a cabin and doesn't know the first thing about how to get started. I was thinking about living in a rural area and commuting to work until retirement and wanted to consider both cabins and tiny homes. But I couldn't determine how to begin planning and searching the internet wasn't much help. I bought the kindle version of this book based on the number of reviews being more than other books with "cabin" in the title and so glad I did since the book was a pleasure to read and really organized my thinking on how to begin planning. Plus the additional guides in the appendix put this book into the 5 star category. ... show more

  • Fed My Dream!!!
Loved the methodical step by step approach. Thinking Adirondack Style, carefully picking home site on my land and planning orientation, looking for rough cut lumber mill nearby, negotiating for cedar trees to cut and will use an Alaskan Saw Mill to make 1/2 Log siding, doing floor plan layout, educating myself on wood stoves, applying for a water connection -vs- drilling a rock well, planning an outdoor fire ring/pit, building Leopold Benches now and figuring out where to put a shooting range. Thank you Wayne Fears for crystallizing all the random issues I've been wrestling with. You are concise, thorough yet interesting. Great approach and end result. ... show more

  • Just OK.
I was very excited to purchase this book because my wife and I were in the middle of building our own 288 sq. ft. cabin in the woods. We knew how we were going to build it, but I thought this book might give us additional ideas. It did give us some ideas, but I was expecting a few more details. I didn't want blueprints, but more sketches and tips would have been nice. I realize that when a person builds a cabin it is a very personalized thing, but Fears left me always looking for more information. I am glad that I bought this book, and it will remain in my collection for reference for a long time, but I will keep looking for a somewhat more informative cabin book. ... show more

  • Fabulous book for beginners and those looking for new ideas
I loved this book. I bought it for my father for christmas, then bought one for myself. I actually read it front to back (like a novel), it's so well-written. Even though my dream cabin is financially a few years off and geographically a few more, I will be following many of the guidelines set out in this book, with some more green ideas (solar panels, reusing water, etc). I would recommend this to anyone wanting to build a cabin of their own, or just know more about them. Great book for anyone. I loved it. ... show more

  • Great reference
Great source of information on many aspects of not just building your cabin but furnishing it and managing the land etc. Lots of information included on wood burning stoves, camp cooking, fire pits, fireplaces outhouses etc. You may not think a cabin should be a small cabin like Fears, but it is stil full of good information. I will keep it as a reference. ... show more

  • Excellent Book
I own 20 acres. Since moving here a year ago I've been wanting to build a cabin. I've bought survival books and few others to be ideas. I bought this one and one other log cabin building and this one has everything I needed. My hunt for good information on this subject is over. Great pictures and illustrations. A complete must have book, thank you to the author. ... show more
